Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

Five people pulled from the sea, assessed and taken to hospital - one more person still missing. After being dragged by current near Clacton Pier. As always, huge respect to the lifeboat crews for the work they do.

LadyFlumpalot · 19/07/2022 16:33

The temperature here (South Somerset) is fluctuating like crazy. We had a rain shower and it dropped to 25 an hour ago, it's climbed back up to 30 now the suns out again.

I'm getting my data from a local weather station report.

Sending thoughts to people up North and in the South East. Cold water over your wrists and neck and my mum used to swear by a cold glass of milk with a packet of crisps for hydration.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 16:44

Temperature peaked a couple of hours ago. (39 on the met office forecast) We are on the way down now.

I have a feeling we are on the same Hill (hills)! Yes I too am at some elevation with a great view westwards to Wales, or I did have, as you say visibility has markedly decreased.

Yes Hill not hills!
Rain soon apparently though it’s momentarily got hotter and closer. I wonder if it’s a pressure thing? I have a bees’ nest on my balcony and they’re very agitated, as they often are before a change in the weather.

InMySpareTime · 19/07/2022 17:01

This is today.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 17:01

That made me feel a bit teary @Piggywaspushed (ridiculous I know).
thank you.

Met Iffice are reporting that at least 29 locations (that is official met office sites) recorded temperatures higher than the previous UK record.

It’s dropped by 1 degree here, breeze feels a bit cooler now.

Ooh, I do the crisps thing - with Coke, though.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 17:11

Ooh the rain band is getting really really close now - about 15 miles away I think !

50mg · 19/07/2022 17:12

There are houses on fire a few miles from here after grass fires spread 😥 And there still people posting on SM that it's all wonderful and a fuss over nothing.

RockandRollsuicide · 19/07/2022 17:13

@MeridianGrey @velvetvixen

An Ozzy was commenting on the fires today and he said he was amazed and astonished that there are no BBQ bans at all! He said it's crazy..

DH wanted one and I just couldn't enjoy it, even with a hose pipe I would feel so nervous.we are also cheek by jowel with neighbors.

I suspect there will be many fire's tonight 😥

It's such a high risk.

RockandRollsuicide · 19/07/2022 17:14

*sorry a commentator on sky news from Oz.

Caramac555 · 19/07/2022 17:16

Well we've just cancelled our bbq plan here, it's windy too, one stray spark...

I live in hope some others might follow suit

AhaLyn · 19/07/2022 17:19

Can’t think of anything worse than milk for hydration…

stuntbubbles · 19/07/2022 17:22

I just nailed a pint of milk inspired by this thread and feel miles better! I am pregnant and having an unhelpful water aversion though so hydration is tricky.

A quick Google would disagree with you.

Is it the jumping in that is the issue as you get caught on something underwater?
I am around your way too and we often swim and paddle board I'm the Thames. Past teddington lock the river isn't tidal and it always feels pretty peaceful

@3WildOnes AFAIK, the increase in danger from jumping in, especially from a bridge, is that hitting the water with such force/speed can cause cold-water shock, which can be enough for someone to seize up and drown without any other factors. But you could also potentially jump right into an area with an undercurrent etc, whereas if you had got in from the bank, you would adjust to the temperature more slowly and have time to get some feel for currents before committing to it. There must be advice online somewhere on swimming in different parts of the Thames, as the conditions can vary a lot.

Given the number of schools with rowing facilities along this stretch, I assume using it sensibly (and with the right supervision for under 18s/novices) is deemed fairly low-risk. I always think paddleboarding looks relaxing - still have absolutely no desire to try it myself though 😁

That makes sense. Thank you.

A quick Google would disagree with you.

I'm sure I read that they did experiments with sports hydration drinks and found that the most hydrating drink was chocolate milk with a pinch of salt in.

Manekinek0 · 19/07/2022 17:29

I worked both days in an NHS kitchen. It was ridiculously hot both days, no reduction in the meals provided (multiple hot lunch choices followed by soup, jacket potato and rice pudding for supper). No aircon, no windows that open properly and it is constantly above 45 degrees but on a positive note it feels cool outside and in my house!

LadyFlumpalot · 19/07/2022 17:31

@Penguintears - that makes sense, even hydrate sachets are basically sugar, salt,
potassium and flavourings (see heree* for Dioralyte ingredients).
