Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

39 here and even 28 inside my very old house that never gets hot.

in my nearest town the three major supermarkets have closed because their fridges, freezers and air con have failed.

East Mids

GloriaSmud · 19/07/2022 14:08

40.8C on my weather station (Leicester). I have a headache that paracetamol hasn't shifted as well.

FourChimneys · 19/07/2022 14:11

I agree with OYBBK. This is a truly sobering day.

I have seen a post on FB from a climate change denier. I don't know how he can be so deluded.

GuiltyPleasure · 19/07/2022 14:13

38 here. I think it's going to peak at 39 (North Yorkshire).
Luckily my garden has some shade & is relatively cool, because we're currently 18 hours without power, so we've no cold drinks, no fans & a fridge of food that was ok last night, but will probably need chucking now (the milk was ok for cereal this morning). I've not even opened the freezer once - I'm hoping that will have helped it retain its temperature Grin

PickAChew · 19/07/2022 14:21

A nearby-ish tesco has had its fridges and freezers fail, too.

Beamish museum didn't open, this morning, due to power cuts in the area.

colouringindoors · 19/07/2022 14:23

Seem to have peaked at 39.5 here, down to 39.1. Much breezier. am so grateful my work is closed today - I'm useless.

@GloriaSmud time to treat yourself as though you have the beginnings of heat exhaustion.

My washing is blowing a lot now. This morning and yesterday were very still so that's a good sign.

lollipoprainbow · 19/07/2022 10:32

I've just rubbed my cat up and down with an ice pop from the freezer he loved it, it really cooled his fur for a few seconds !

Thank you for this tip. I’ve just done the same and mine loved it! He is not a fan of being brushed, but he kept coming back for more of this.

ATrifleofFun · 19/07/2022 14:28

My weather app is saying we might have thunder and rain at 6ish in North Hants. Very much looking forward to that possibility! My poor toddler has been banned from the park for the last 48 hours because it has been too hot. She will be so happy when it cools down and we let her out again.

ListenLinda · 19/07/2022 14:28

just had a text from Northern Powergrid. Just quickly plugged the kids stuff in for a quick charge (which probably isn’t wise) incase it goes off. Seems to be a lot near by.

I’m struggling a little in my north facing kitchen today.
i can see my washing blowing about outside, but that breeze is just hot air.
headache has cleared a bit, i’ve had three ice lollies one after another and drinking cold juice.

praying for a break in this soon.
i’m a sun lover, I love sunny days in the garden and paddling pools and beers & G&Ts, I love going to Turkey on holiday.

But this is too much.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 14:30

My weather app is saying 70pc chance of rain at 8pm 🙏🏻

HannahSternDefoe · 19/07/2022 14:30

There's a terrible fire in Dartford.
🙏 Please let everyone be safe.

colouringindoors · 19/07/2022 14:32

Just seen this Dartford fire on Sky News. Looks like it's spread into a row of residential homes. Horrendous. 🙏🙏🙏

Try and have a salty snack if you can as well. In the heat you’ll be sweating and loosing salt as well as water.

I’ve had to cancel a walk (shaded area in a cooler part of the county) as even at the lower temps (26) I was worried about feeling unwell.

Suetwo · 19/07/2022 14:38

North Essex here (near Colchester). Just went for a walk around the block and now feel dizzy. It’s definitely worse than yesterday. Even in the shade it feels like someone is blowing a hairdryer in your face.

Menomadness · 19/07/2022 14:39

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 09:43

Goodness. Cambridge reached 33c by 9:20. That's quite extraordinary.

Cambs here and it is truly unbearable!! Postie OH home early as it is just to hot to be out and no air Con in work van.
Just willing myself some energy to do the dreaded walk to and from school for the pick up.
Thanks for all your updates.
🙂

restedbutexhausted · 19/07/2022 14:39

@Eumy this is a good point. You can make an electrolyte drink too by mixing fruit juice/squash with water and a little bit of salt.

justasking111 · 19/07/2022 14:40

Freezers failed at my local Asda, Iceland ok. Windy here now in n Wales. Watching the thunderstorms moving up through Wales. Google Lightning map if you want to check your area

colouringindoors · 19/07/2022 14:43

Dartford fire has engulfed some homes 😪

MumOfNowGrownupKids · 19/07/2022 14:44

Forecast for where I used to live and work, in a primary school with out air conditioning. These temperatures were normal for summer. School had walls of glass and not much through draft.... Fans do make a difference, even at these temperatures. We coped.

Had a five mile bike ride home from work in 37°. I've never been abroad so never experienced real heat.
That's me done for the day. Dh is still at work un loading trucks wearing full ppe!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 14:49

The Dartford fire looks absolutely horrendous on Sky. Peoples homes on fire in Greater London. Remember this.
