Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

I see that active thunderstorms have moved into the far SW. This marks the boundary of change between the extreme heat and fresher, moister air. It will be fascinating to watch the transition

Oh yes, bring it on!! I watched the weather at lunch time and was actually in tears when they announced the cold air coming in from Northern Ireland!! 😂It looks like here in the Midlands we aren't getting thunder storms though and I was looking forward to a good storm. I just have this vision of the cold air mass kicking the sh*t out of the vile heat!!

The Dartford fire looks absolutely horrendous on Sky. Peoples homes on fire in Greater London. Remember this.

it's horrendous isn't it 😪

This is not just summer.
This is not like 1976
This is now our climate emergency.

GloriaSmud · 19/07/2022 15:04

OYBBK I've just had lots of water and a sit down with a damp toweI. I tried it on my chest and face at first but didn't like the feel of that but wrapping it around my feet seems to have worked!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 15:13

I'm really glad to hear that @GloriaSmud

Yes @colouringindoors The London Fire brigade have now declared a major incident due to a 'huge surge in fires across the capital'.

The wind has really picked up here in Cambs/Suffolk, though not in a refreshing way. I hope with these thunderstorms moving in they're not going to set off more fires as the ground is tinder dry here. I think we last had rain about 2 weeks ago, and even that was just a shower. I don't think we've had proper rain since May!

Danceajig · 19/07/2022 15:32

Apologies for the depressing post, but I don't think anyone's mentioned on this thread yet about reminding teenagers in particular to please, please, no matter how hot they get, avoid jumping into open water. Hidden currents, obstacles, or just the sudden shock from the temperature difference can be fatal, and there's been a few tragedies in the last days.

We're in the heartland of the hottest place (Heathrow-way), but TBH the main thing on many of the parents' minds here is hearing all the sirens heading down to the Thames yesterday, or driving past groups of sobbing teenagers, and only finding out later that it was because of the poor 14-year-old boy who was jumping into the river with a big group of mates to cool down, and never resurfaced. Heartbreaking.

Motorina · 19/07/2022 15:35

@cavemum there's a couple of big fires in/near Ipswich. Ravenswood Park, and another near Woodbridge. I'm thatched and surrounded by crops. Everything's tinder dry. Agreed, with the wind it would only take one spark for the fields to go up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 15:36

Sad @Danceajig that is very tragic. His poor family and friends.

This is so scary.

lesser troublesome news, just had a call from Nursery, asking if we can go get DS as the pre school room has hit 39 degrees.

RockandRollsuicide · 19/07/2022 15:39

@Danceajig .
We need to drum this into Teens.

Signs up do sod all. We need a dangerous water show like the safe drive stay alive.

It should be part of the school day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 15:39

Conningsby in Lincolnshire has equaled the Heathrow record. That might help silence the deniers.

Im seeing so many reports of fires now. The hot strong winds will be fanning them. Thank goodness that the weather will change tonight because we are seeing very similar conditions to those that fan huge fires in the likes of places like Portugal

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 15:41

@CaveMum yes, that is a worry, that we may have lightning without rain for some.

Please please please, don't use BBQs today, or do anything stupid. This is utterly, utterly awful.

Motorina · 19/07/2022 15:41

BBC news reporting met office saying we can expect this every three years. Dear God.

This message can’t be repeated enough. A 13 year old boy died in a river in Northumberland on Sunday too. I believe there have been 5 water fatalities over the past few days. Tragic.

Vebrithien · 19/07/2022 15:41

On the Somerset/Wiltshire border, and the heavens have just opened. Looks like the rain is tracking across from the West now.

My condolences and sympathies, to all those affected.

RockandRollsuicide · 19/07/2022 15:42

Oh you,

I wonder why there isn't a ban on BBQ issued or bonfires etc!

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 15:42

Teenagers are a bloody nightmare to keep safe. thinks of one in particular

It's a lot of "no you can't" at the moment.

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 15:43

SIL in Bristol just WhatsApp'd me to say it's chucking down over there and she's standing in the garden getting gloriously soaked #jealous

Because our government are utter arses and too busy eating each other to do any actual governing? Raab thinks we should carry on as normal, but perhaps walk in the shade. Angry

Apparently 36.8 has been recorded in Durham - 4C higher than the previous record 'ere up North.

We're promised a chance of rain in the next hour or so but no sign of anything on the radar.

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 15:45

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 15:45

We have decamped to their dad's house. Trying to keep them hydrated and safe. There is a lot of moaning.

SquirmOfEels · 19/07/2022 15:45

London Fire Brigade has declared a major emergency (announced by mayor) because they are so busy - fires across the capital plus major one at Wennington, Essex. Urging care and vigilance from the public over fire safety precautions.

And I saw debris from a BBQ in the park - where the grass is tinder dry (and where BBQs are banned anyhow). The stupidity of some never ceases to amaze

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 15:46

It's dropped a degree here in Surrey to 37. We're on the way down

restedbutexhausted · 19/07/2022 15:48

@OhYouBadBadKitten be interesting to see what he has to say when we have massive global crop failures a few years down the line.
