Grin

Might as well get going on this thread, though it is rather a tease at the moment.

The ECMWF model is hinting at the possibility of some much colder weather next week, perhaps bringing some snow to Scottish hills. BUT the met office are still going for quite a wild and wet affair instead.
The ECMWF shows quite an interesting scenario really.

I'm worried about it too. I know I've been quiet on here recently, but I'm deeply concerned about the impact on infrastructure. For many, we start with a period of heavy rain that will wash away any gritting attempts and will turn to ice. The ability to keep roads clear will be down due to council staff self isolating. Those who rely on deliveries due to shielding may well not get their deliveries.
Impact on vaccine centres and staff getting to hospitals.....

Normally I'd be fascinated. I'm just worried.

We are still waiting for our bins to be emptied as we had loads of snow on bin day earlier this week. They should be coming today. The problem with gritting is that it is useless on snow, but our council doesn't have enough snow ploughs.

It's very hilly where we live and it was utter chaos on Tuesday morning when it snowed, and vaccinations had to be cancelled. We aren't forecast much snow this time, but the highest temperature next week is forecast to be 2 degrees.

That's interesting. I will make sure mum has what she needs but she resolutely refuses to accept what "need" is. I had to sneak a bunch of stuff into her cupboards and freezer for the winter and she's already told me several times that it's too much.

She lives on a narrow lane that's very hard to reach so there won't be any neighbours who can help because they will be in a similar position. The main thing is just to hope she stays healthy. A medical crisis now would finish me off.

There was a huge queue at the supermarket yesterday so I'm guessing anyone who can stock up has done so.

Just a bit of snow in Aberdeenshire (at my parents home).

NotAQueef · 06/02/2021 12:34

Oh wow nannychick is that fresh or accumulated over a while?

nannynick · 06/02/2021 12:43

Accumulated in the past week or so. They had about 4 inches last night they think.

bananaskin123 · 06/02/2021 15:27

We're in Hertfordshire (near Watford). Have been looking at various forecasts on line. Some show snow in the early hours, others tomorrow afternoon. Radio 4 forecast (only caught the end) but seemed to say snow was more likely in Kent, Essex and maybe that side of London. Think I'll move our car to the top of our very sloping drive just in case. I really don't mind it being really cold but hate snow.

nannynick · 06/02/2021 15:27

For those you with Facebook... an engineer from Scottish & Southern Electricity Network has posted some pictures of snow banks higher them himself: www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10222362816837129&set=pcb.755107878724574

DrunkenKoala · 06/02/2021 16:35

Looking at the forecast for Kent it looks like it’ll be snowing from the early hours tomorrow morning until Monday evening and then temperatures won’t bet about freezing for a few days after that. It’ll be next weekend before we get temperatures high enough to melt it. Glad I’ve got nowhere to go except the garden and local park with the DC.

I did have a food delivery booked for tomorrow morning at the time we’re on amber alert so I’ve cancelled that and been out this afternoon and got stocked up.

iVampire · 06/02/2021 17:01

There’s still snow in the forecast for London, but not as heavy or for as long as they forecast yesterday.

How stable are the forecasts now it’s this close? I would love to see plenty of snow - but do realise that others would be aghast at the potential for disruption

megletthesecond · 06/02/2021 17:23

North Hampshire forecast has moved to more rain and some light snow in the early hours. Some snow would have been nice as DD won't go out otherwise (she went out two weeks ago) but I don't want vaccinations messed up or the emergency services overwhelmed.

Frenchdressing · 06/02/2021 17:30

Manchester seems totally shielded as usual. Right on the edge of the snow. I don’t want disruption but a bit of snow would be a nice thing for the DCs.

OxanaVorontsova · 06/02/2021 17:51

We’ve got snow forecast almost every day for the next week, having only had one week without any since mid December (north east) bit sick of it now tbh

MarinPrime · 06/02/2021 18:28

I don't think many DC's will want to go out for fun in the snow tomorrow here in coastal Essex.
Met office says gales with wind chill of -7 Shock

megletthesecond · 06/02/2021 19:19

yy Marin That's not little kid temperatures.

WreckTangled · 06/02/2021 19:21

Our area says -9° wind chill during the day. My poor dc are going to freeze at school. They've been wearing thermals and extra layers as it is due to all the windows having to be open.

lockdownrainbow · 06/02/2021 20:22

I am near salisbury will we get snow tomorrow and monday ?
Bbc weather says snow here 1pm till 7pm tomorrow light
And monday heavy snow 6am till 11am

How accurate?

EwwSprouts · 06/02/2021 20:25

Wasn't really expecting any snow following the TV forecasts. But huge flakes coming down now and about 2 inches settled. East Yorkshire fairly low lying.

Hawkmoth · 06/02/2021 20:47

I've just seen something on twitter about a streamer for Monday. I don't really understand, apart from the foot of snow bit. How likely is it?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2021 21:02

For which area Hawkmoth? I've seen some modelling which implies that streamers will set up. I think there's potential for a thames streamer to set up. One of the questions is how far will they penetrate They can certainly dump a lot of snow over a few hours.

Oh lordy Whereabouts along the Thames, do we know?
OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2021 21:03

Lockdown, I'm not sure how much Salisbury will see over the next couple of days. I think you are a bit far west. But there is more potential for you mid week.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2021 21:05

I don't know yet Luna. I think there is potential into the Reading area, but if I'm honest, that's more of a guess at the moment.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2021 21:07

Meglet, I'm fairly sure you'll get a covering of snow. Of bigger concern though will be the ice.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2021 21:09

oh - quick top tip for those with wheelie bins - wedge the lid open a tiny bit before you go to bed tonight, if it isn't frozen stuck already.
