Grin

Might as well get going on this thread, though it is rather a tease at the moment.

The ECMWF model is hinting at the possibility of some much colder weather next week, perhaps bringing some snow to Scottish hills. BUT the met office are still going for quite a wild and wet affair instead.
The ECMWF shows quite an interesting scenario really.

It is astonishing how the models have been consistently showing next weeks potential snow event.
Some models are also showing snow for Saturday too - a very marginal situation relying on evaporative cooling.

For once, I really don't want snow. We don't need further disruption to food supplies and people need to be able to get to vaccination centres. But what happens, will happen, so I'll stick to the forecasting side of this.

That thought crossed my mind as well, especially about the vaccination centres. Our community centre here is also a branch of our doctor's surgery and when I've gone on my afternoon walks the last few days, I've been watching (from a distance - the centre's surrounded by playing fields/tennis courts) as the elderly/vulnerable go in one entrance and come out the other after receiving their jabs. After seeing those models, we really don't want heavy falls of snow/icy ground disrupting all that at the moment.

@AcornAutumn

Laurie, thank you for the wonderful pics! Do you mind if I ask where you took those?
I am in Angus, @AcornAutumn, I think it got a good bit more exciting about eleven...i took those about half eight.
MoMuntervary · 12/01/2021 10:49

Totally agree that we don't want beast from the east type disruption to vaccine/food. But a bit of pretty, non-disruptive snow would be nice.

Met Office forecast for Bristol looks decidedly grey and mild though.

Perihelion · 12/01/2021 10:51

Laurie beautifulSmile.
I'm still waiting for another aurora event like Autumn 2003. Huge X class CMEs, with aurora dancing around half the sky. Possibly more elusive than snow.

Perihelion · 12/01/2021 10:52

Hard frost overnight in Edinburgh, after hitting 10C yesterday afternoon Hmm

BiddyPop · 12/01/2021 12:05

It does look more promising for snow from mid next week alright, having looked at the models. While it would be disruptive to jabs etc, it might help keep people indoors generally and slow the spread.

Although there were problems in the Wicklow mountains over the weekend as, with no where else to go, hordes of people went up and blocked roads and gates, and got themselves into difficulty up there, most well beyond their 5km limit....

BiddyPop · 12/01/2021 12:06

Should have added, we had a lot of rain last night, and it is mild and high clouds with sun trying to break through today.

Unescorted · 13/01/2021 07:27

Biddy you would hope so. Last weekend we had a group of 30(ish) walk up Kinder in the snow and fog.

Can I put a request in for snow overnight and then bright crisp daytimes please. Grin

Placemarking for reliable snow tips!

Dh currently working in Manchester, travelling from Barnsley so weather is pretty important as he crosses Woodhead which isn't the nicest of roads in good conditions never mind bad weather.

Delatron · 13/01/2021 15:19

They’ve changed my forecast in SE to warmer temps now for next week? Snow all gone and just more rain and 8 degrees. Have the models changed or have the forecasts not picked it up?

Agree we don’t want disruption at the moment could do without this rain though. Was enjoying the cold sunny days!

sluj · 13/01/2021 18:30

My apps have just started showing sleet and snow for tomorrow and Saturday in the Northern Home counties. We have so far been missed and I am cautiously excited 😁

dementedma · 13/01/2021 18:52

Snowing here in Fife near Kinross

FourTeaFallOut · 13/01/2021 18:53

My google weather app is saying 76-125mm of snowfall this evening. If we get that we are definitely sacking off homeschool.

Perihelion · 13/01/2021 19:22

Precipitation doesn't have a clue what it's doing in Edinburgh. Snow, sleet, rain, graupel, ice pellets ( new one to me Hmm)
Did have to laugh at Police Scotland saying only travel for essential reasons Grin

Frouby · 14/01/2021 07:57

Snowing in South Yorkshire, not settling tho. Off to allotment to feed chooks in a minute and have tried to phone dh who is already probably in Manchester to warn him.

ListenLinda · 14/01/2021 08:03

Snowing and settling in West Yorkshire at the moment. Meant to be heavier this morning then lighter this afternoon.

gingercat02 · 14/01/2021 08:09

Pouring with rain since last night on NE England coast. Very disappointed 12yo 😭

OublietteBravo · 14/01/2021 08:11

Pouring with rain here too (Bedford). The weather app is still suggesting snow this afternoon. I don’t believe it.

beenrumbled · 14/01/2021 08:12

raining heavily in Manchester

QueenPawPaws · 14/01/2021 11:44

Just started snowing here (preston) but not sticking as it's been raining earlier

ThomasHardyPerennial · 14/01/2021 11:49

We've had 5 hours of heavy snow so far in West Yorkshire (7 miles from Leeds). Live on a very long hill, and it wasn't gritted last night. Absolute carnage out there, it is very worrying. I've had a few near misses on ice already this year, so feeling pretty grumpy about the disruption.
