Might as well get going on this thread, though it is rather a tease at the moment.

The ECMWF model is hinting at the possibility of some much colder weather next week, perhaps bringing some snow to Scottish hills. BUT the met office are still going for quite a wild and wet affair instead.

I am still seeing teasers of SSW and another Beast from the East towards the end of the month and start of February. What do you think @OhYouBadBadKitten and @GloriaSmud. I know that's a long time away in meteorological terms

Yes, there is currently a major SSW taking place. While things will turn milder for a little while in the coming week, it does seem likely that we will return to cold with perhaps more (or for some of us some) decent snow potential later this month and maybe into February.

The week after next is looking a bit chilly at the moment. Still a bit far into the future for certainty but the GFS are giving these sort of temperatures for 9am on the 20th January (which also happens to be DD2's 18th birthday - snow that day would please her greatly!)

I would love more snow please.

Is that mainly in Scotland and in the north of the country Gloria? Seems like the south never get much anymore!

Temperature-wise, it's looking chilly everywhere Titsywoo. As for snow, that's always a difficult one to forecast but with the cold in place, I'd say wintry showers are possible just about anywhere from the end of next weekend onwards.

And here was me hoping the danger was over.

Roll on spring.

Models have been fairly consistently showing a big snow event around 21st Jan in the SE. Its still a way off, but there is good model agreement for a big drop in temperatures again.

No snow in the SW we would dearly love some!

We had more snow and proper cold this week. Made the most of it, finding a huge frozen puddle in a field to go skating on Horrified at people going the ice on the canal and the reservoirs around Edinburgh. I'd swerved reservoirs, because they're too deep to feel safe on, but a ranger post on Facebook, pointed out that they are even more dangerous, because as the water level fluctuates, there can be a space between the ice and the water level.
Warmed up again now...7C after hitting -6C on Friday.

I suppose one rare benefit of lockdown is that a snow day is easily acheivable for the kids.

But a snow day just isn't the same when it's not a windfall day off!

True, I suppose, but my 8yr old has no real memory of snow. It would be nice for him to experience it once before he grows up.

I still do not have snow, but I do have Aurora! I know @GloriaSmud likes a bit of green!
