Storm Ciara forecasts and reports

First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

BBC is showing much stronger winds than metoffice. I'm sure it won't get as bad as we think!

Piggywaspushed · 08/02/2020 16:15

Bit concerned that I am meant to be going to the 02 tomorrow for the Strictly Tour (noon kick off). This involves Thameslink train and then Jubilee Line.

Give the parks have all been closed, I really am not sure where that leaves me and DS. Sad

That might depend where you are - FWIW the Heathrow Airport aviation forecast (met office) and the BBC Heathrow forecast pretty much match with maximum wind speeds tomorrow PM of over 70 MPH.....

Belindabelle · 08/02/2020 16:39

Yes just seen the BBC forecast on tv and they were predicting 85mph across the Central Belt of Scotland tomorrow afternoon but Metoffice have 45mph and just have yellow warning.

dementedma · 08/02/2020 16:44

Well it’s getting very windy here now. Door has blown open twice.
It looks like a cold and blowy day at Murrayfield. Glad I’m not there

Perihelion · 08/02/2020 16:45

Wind picking up now in Edinburgh and rain on it's way, just in time for the rugby.

MarthasGinYard · 08/02/2020 16:50

Picking up here

North Staffs Moors

Perihelion · 08/02/2020 16:50

I think with the Central Belt, a lot depends on the wind direction. If it's more Southerly, it's not so bad. Westerlies get funnelled along the Forth Clyde Valley and that's when we can end up with 70/80mph plus gusts.
I don't think BBC weather has been great since they stopped using the Met office.

notimagain · 08/02/2020 16:51

For those upthread who had plans to travel by air tomorrow - I gather 'm some of the airlines operating into/out of Gatwick and Heathrow have started to cancel flights in anticipation of the winds there being outside limits for most of Sunday.

It looks like it's going to be one of those "check with the airline before leaving for the airport" days.

Lolimax · 08/02/2020 16:53

I'll be driving home after a 12 hour night shift in A and E. Not relishing the thought!

Jellykat · 08/02/2020 16:54

Wind already picking up here in West Wales

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2020 16:57

I'm always fascinated by the weather threads even when they don't affect my plans. Thank you Gloria and OYBBK.

I've been out moving bins and garden chairs. Just a very gentle breeze here (Hertfordshire) . No bird song since this morning and no sign of the little tribe of squirrels who are usually playing along our fences. It is so quiet.

MintToBee · 08/02/2020 17:07

It's quite bad here. We are on top of an exposed hill with a |_| shaped farm yard which the wind is trapped in!The dogs are hiding under the radiator and I cant get them out at all. Think its puppy pads in kitchen tonight. Think I'll just stand outside with my suitcase and umbrella and fly myself to Devon!

AlexaAmbidextra · 08/02/2020 17:08

We have 60mph winds forecast for tonight so I’ve just been out and secured all my plant tubs in one corner of the garden. Think I’ve given myself a hernia. 😂

Nousernameforme · 08/02/2020 17:10

Barely a breeze here in North Somerset. I've canceled our plans for tomorrow everyone's looking at me like I'm a numpty at the moment. Its been bright and sunny all day

FluffytheGoldfish · 08/02/2020 17:14

We have arrived at our hotel in Queensferry, DH found the drive from Glasgow 'fun'. Just hope the bridge is open tomorrow and we can get our flight. It is at 0605.
Last time we took this flight it was like that scene in the Airplane movie where the plane keeps changing gateGrin we practically ran the full length of the airport to end up on a bus back to the other side!

PixieDustt · 08/02/2020 17:18

Meant to get windy about 9pm here. The calm before the storm!

ScouseQueen · 08/02/2020 17:23

What are the chances of kids' sports fixtures going ahead tomorrow morning on Merseyside, do you think @OhYouBadBadKitten?

Frustratedandworried · 08/02/2020 17:27

Fairly calm here in surrey at the moment and tbh I'm not really sure what prep I can do.

We are supposed to be travelling a short distance around 10am tomorrow and hoping that's manageable

cuteglasses · 08/02/2020 17:37

Portsmouth here! Very quiet, no rain or wind

Frouby · 08/02/2020 17:38

Calm and quiet up to now in sunny south Yorkshire. There's a breeze but nothing else though it did start to cloud over this afternoon after a bright and sunny day.

Took the dog for a long walk this morning as she won't go out tomorrow (fairweather whippet) other than the back garden under protest if it's wet.

Hoping the chicken coop survives. Have weighted it down as best we can with bricks and slabs.

Northernsoullover · 08/02/2020 17:41

I'm in Cardiff...barely a murmur..

itsgettingweird · 08/02/2020 17:44

Cute same here! Not quite 8n the city but just outside. It's been lovely! Got to drive into city tomorrow for swimming comp and avoid the M275 though 😂😂

itsgettingweird · 08/02/2020 17:44

May avoid!

silverlamplight · 08/02/2020 17:45

been a beautiful day here in South Yorks. Did some gardening this morning, then also stacked garden chairs and upturned tables etc... Garden now all secured and upsdie down, but still calm and mild and birds tweeting their bedtime songs....my family thinks Ive gone mad but we shall see. I was meant to be taking part in a 10K run tomorrow which has been cancelled - and runs are very rarely cancelled so that tells me something!
