Seems a bit silly having multiple threads going when it might be quite a lively summer. It looks lively again this week anyhow.

We have met office thunderstorm warnings for the next three days.
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2019-06-23

Tomorrow storm potential looks to be areas away from the SE, including northern England and the Midlands, but I'm also keeping an eye on the SE for tomorrow night. By mid week the storm potential really grows though and by Wednesday we could have some really cracking storms.

Thunderstorms are notoriously difficult to forecast. Not only whether they will happen, but where they will happen. I'll see if I can find the link to the excellent met office tweet about that earlier this week.

It's all being driven by very hot air being drawn up from Africa, through mainland Europe, which could see temps close to 40C. We could see temperatures touching 30C by Thursday. It's going to be humid and uncomfortable I'm afraid.

what do the yellow dots mean?

TokyoSushi · 25/07/2019 15:33

Oh goodness, we're in Cheshire, it is quite dark, and very hot, and something looks like it's coming for us on the radar!

RainbowPanda · 25/07/2019 15:39

@PJMasksGhekko the dots are lightning strikes. New strikes are yellow and get darker... the darkest/oldest being up to 60mins who

PJMasksGhekko · 25/07/2019 15:43

Thank you RainbowPanda Smile

PickAChew · 25/07/2019 15:43

I've been keeping an eye on the radar so I know when to bring my washing in. We were originally forecast thunder at 5 but now it's a chance of rain at 6. The current storms look like a pretty narrow band but there's rain bubbling up in the lakes. We're sheltered by the pennines so anything we get, storm wise, was massive in the first place, like Tuesday night, which I slept through, or seems to bubble up in the pennines.

A lot going on Liverpool way, why can't it be here North Northants!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 15:49

The storms forming now are separate to the storms that are likely to form in the east over night.

Met office keeps changing, I know that they are difficult to predict though, wind has picked up here.

ExpletiveDelighted · 25/07/2019 15:52

Very overcast here now, big change in the last hour (Hants/Surrey border area).

beenrumbled · 25/07/2019 16:04

Nothing here yet - posted on the summer heat wave thread by mistake earlier!

2 dots the the app north of us, but only some high cloud and can see others building in the distance - still sunny and sweltering

Bit concerned DS1 is refereeing a football match to the south of Manchester this evening - large open area. Gulp

PickAChew · 25/07/2019 16:09

Met office does seem to be updating by the hour, at the moment. Now have 60% chance of thunder for 6pm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 16:10

Sorry it's so confusing with the two threads! After today we can wind down the heatwave thread (until the next one?)

And it's the Durham City run, tonight! Rather them than me!

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 16:35

Our forecast has changed now (Essex) and not showing storms til gone midnight. Was hoping for one this evening

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 16:41

I wouldn't pay in the slightest bit of attention to those info graphic forecasts. They are automated, and really are not much use in situations where storms can just pop up.

Absolutely pouring down, giant thunder
Lancashire

Saucery · 25/07/2019 16:56

Thunder with hail and rain, Lancashire. I just went and stood out in it. - glorious! 🌧

beenrumbled · 25/07/2019 17:02

Still nothing here! Manchester looks like we might miss it.

Poor ancient Mankycat does not know what to do with himself.

DS1 has gone off to his football match, I'm not sure what the FA stance on thunderstorms is; its an under 16s match at a premier league training ground - I think it might be down to the ref to decide if they have to come off if it does storm.

Honeyroar · 25/07/2019 17:03

Ooh can’t wait! (Lancs/Yorks border here.

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 17:04

@YesQueen I am SO jealous

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 17:25

I think that the southern storms will be primarily over East Anglia looking at the current set up.

Just gone very dark here, few big spots of rain & can hear distant thunder. Bring it on!!

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 17:29

I have a feeling they are going to narrowly miss me
😫
Did you say these storms are different from those expected over night? Our forecast keeps changing so much I can’t keep up with it

TopBitchoftheWitches · 25/07/2019 17:30

OhYouBadBadKitten
I'm north Essex / Suffolk border. Please bring me a storm ☔️ melting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 17:42

They are Bella, basically we have two distinct areas, maybe 3 actually, the home grown ones that developed over the Welsh border area, the ones that are coming up from France at present and perhaps later some of our own home grown ones, probably also in the east, but perhaps further west too? None of it as far as I can tell is quite behaving as expected. It's fascinating to watch develop.
