Seems a bit silly having multiple threads going when it might be quite a lively summer. It looks lively again this week anyhow.

We have met office thunderstorm warnings for the next three days.
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2019-06-23

Tomorrow storm potential looks to be areas away from the SE, including northern England and the Midlands, but I'm also keeping an eye on the SE for tomorrow night. By mid week the storm potential really grows though and by Wednesday we could have some really cracking storms.

Thunderstorms are notoriously difficult to forecast. Not only whether they will happen, but where they will happen. I'll see if I can find the link to the excellent met office tweet about that earlier this week.

It's all being driven by very hot air being drawn up from Africa, through mainland Europe, which could see temps close to 40C. We could see temperatures touching 30C by Thursday. It's going to be humid and uncomfortable I'm afraid.

I see! I am right under them 😁.

Talking of the heat bursts, sure we had that in London last night. We had some brief thunder/rain early eve that disappeared then it suddenly felt even more hot and humid, I was wondering why it didn't at least cool a bit. Could have been a heat burst maybe? God it was an uncomfortable night last night, I am knackered this morning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2019 09:07

It could have been a heat burst, I'd need to see a temperature graph, I think there were a few.

It was very strange for sure.

Didn’t realise we had a weather section here! I know none of the terminology, but thought I’d share yesterday’s experience here.

The day was boiling hot with a very occasional waft of wind. Phone app said 32 feels like 34, but I swear it was hotter.

I live fairly rurally (about 5 mile inland from Frinton coast in Essex) so no buildings to impede view of the sky. Around 19:00, sky to the left was clear blue, but to the right and from behind it started to darken. Could hear thunder in the distance, but couldn’t see lightning. I sat on the lawn for about 20 minutes fascinated. To the right kept getting darker and to the left stayed clear. Areas of the greenery in garden where lit up with a golden glow that looked beautiful.

Still no lightning at this point and the air was so still. All of a sudden birds started going nuts and taking off from trees. Then this really weird wind suddenly swooped in, with leaves tumbling down into the garden. Felt a couple of fat drops of rain and within a minute the heavens opened - it was like a monsoon that was blowing sideways.

The lightning then started and within 10 minutes the power went in the house. It kicked back in after about 30 seconds. The lightning continued and it was coming from all around, couldn’t decide which direction to look in. Huge sheet lightning flashing behind clouds and various forks across the sky.

My house is old and will often shake if thunder overhead. You know the thunder that sounds like a quick giant boom/clap. This thunder through the storm was a long, continuous rumble instead. Didn’t seem to shake the house, but a couple of lightning instances made the windows vibrate - I could be mistaken in my differentiation though.

The power went out at around 20:30 for just over an hour. The lightning continued until around 22:00. I started the whole thing when I was sitting in the garden thinking “this is so cool and quite stunning” (was really scared of storms as a kid and so impress myself nowadays!). Ended up feeling a bit nervous and wanting it all to go away!

And that’s my stormy story! Lovely sunshine today, temperature of 24 at the moment which feels lovely.

That's a great description Furries I enjoyed reading it. What a great weather day!

It will be the weather sections 10th Anniversary in February!

I'm fairly sure we had the temperature spike, it was unbearable and then we had a massive clap of thunder, torrential rain and I thought it was in for the duration. 5 minutes later it had all stopped and it got really hot and humid, I got no sleep at all last night.

Furries · 26/07/2019 13:57

Thanks OhYouBadBadKittens - I’ll try to look out for the thread in February, sounds interesting!

magimedi · 26/07/2019 13:58

There's a little trail of thunderstorms.

And one of those storms was right over us. There was a flash of lightning & at exactly the same time the loudest clap of thunder I have ever heard. I really thought the house had been struck. Fortunately we hadn't been struck but a house about 50yards away was struck through the roof by the lightning. Massive hole in roof, smoke pouring out. The fire brigade were here in moments & all was put out swiftly & all the occupants are OK. Neighbour who is a builder has rigged up a tarpaulin over the hole for now.

It was really terrifying - my heart rate shot up to insane levels for a moment or two when the thunderclap went off.

It took out our router - just got a new one rigged up. Several neighbours have had their (landline) phones buggered by it & quite a few TVs have been frazzled.

Storms have now gone & sun coming out, but much cooler.

Far too exciting a morning!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2019 14:27

Oh good grief magi what a fright for everyone. How much of the storm had arrived before the strike?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2019 14:28

We will have to have a party thread I reckon Grin

magimedi · 26/07/2019 14:30

Very little, OYBBK. There's been rumblings on and off since about 6.00am & the strike was at about 8am. No significant storm at all before that & none after.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2019 15:06

Wow. Can I give you a link to report it to please when I get home?

OP posts:
magimedi · 26/07/2019 15:10

Yes, of course you can. Can you send me the link via PM, in case I have to but in identifying geographical details, please?

magimedi · 26/07/2019 15:10

'put' in not but in!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2019 15:47

sent :)

A neighbour of ours a couple of years ago had all the windows and doors (all open) suddenly slam shut in a thunder storm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2019 17:57

Was there any damage crazy?

PancakeAndKeith · 26/07/2019 18:03

We had a thunder clap like that here about 15 years ago. I was just walking into Sainsbury’s as it happened. Everyone as a man shouted ‘fucking hell’.
When I got home lots of my electrical stuff was shot.

crazycurry · 26/07/2019 19:21

no, none.

Bellasblankexpression · 26/07/2019 21:07

Wow that sounds intense!
We’ve got a couple of rumblings at the moment but they’re quite mild sounding. BBC has storms forecast again tonight - had a lovely one in the early hours and I’m shattered after a horrible stressful day (pregnancy scans) but also largely because I leapt out of bed as soon as it woke me up and sat up to watch it... so have been running on a severe lack of sleep!
Still hoping this turns into another show though!

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/07/2019 22:29

I was at my sister in laws when a nearby thunderclap/lightning strike tripped the electrics in her carport.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/07/2019 22:30

oh and I remember one clap that went off directly overhead and light came through windows on three sides of the kitchen at once.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/07/2019 14:14

Thank you OYBBK -

Hoping for storms here - The one last weeks were not particularly powerful here.

Taking advantage of the dry day today to get all my washing done and out on the line - been impossible to do over the very wet weekend!
