Seems a bit silly having multiple threads going when it might be quite a lively summer. It looks lively again this week anyhow.

We have met office thunderstorm warnings for the next three days.
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2019-06-23

Tomorrow storm potential looks to be areas away from the SE, including northern England and the Midlands, but I'm also keeping an eye on the SE for tomorrow night. By mid week the storm potential really grows though and by Wednesday we could have some really cracking storms.

Thunderstorms are notoriously difficult to forecast. Not only whether they will happen, but where they will happen. I'll see if I can find the link to the excellent met office tweet about that earlier this week.

It's all being driven by very hot air being drawn up from Africa, through mainland Europe, which could see temps close to 40C. We could see temperatures touching 30C by Thursday. It's going to be humid and uncomfortable I'm afraid.

Thunder and lightening in Milton Keynes

speakfriendandenter · 24/07/2019 01:38

Was having a little read of this earlier and now (Solihull/Birmingham) had beautiful lightning! Heavy rain with it too. This is doing my insomnia no good at all Grin

EugenesAxe · 24/07/2019 01:40

Wow that map is something else! Yes I see what you mean - Salisbury, Birmingham and Coventry all seemed to be covered in new flashes. Most of the Cotswolds are hidden under a mass of spots, but older now.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/07/2019 01:42

Rainy haily noises. Windy gusts and some very close strikes.

W mids.

RainbowPanda · 24/07/2019 01:58

It's now arrived in Cheshire! I had not longed dozed off too!

RainbowPanda · 24/07/2019 01:59

Wow look at that map!

Amazing half hour in Warwickshire- never seen a storm like it. Constant rumbling of thunder and so much lightning for 30 mins or so.

And it’s still bloody muggy and hot ...

GloriaSmud · 24/07/2019 02:12

Rain has arrived in Leicester. Almost constant sheet lightning but we've only had a few rumbles of thunder so far.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2019 06:37

That was a magnificent night! Rather sleepless though! I see there is some scattered remnants over Scotland and that scattered T storms have also appeared over East Anglia.
What an enormous multicell storm that was. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like that on a lightning detector site like that before,

Well, I needn't have bothered watering my allotment last night, huge storm, torrential rain between about 12.30 and 1.30 (South central).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2019 07:04

It was a nice top up!

Any damage reports out there this morning?

OP posts:
NaturalBornWoman · 24/07/2019 07:12

Wow, that was something. When it woke me it was like the sky was flashing like a strobe light and the thunder was a continuous rumble. Then it came close and you could see the massive bolts and hear the thunderclaps. Then the torrential rain and the weird wind as well. I like storms but that was disturbing. And our power kept cutting out. There must be damage I would have thought.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2019 07:19

Natural, can you tell me more about the wind please? How long did it last? Which direction did it come from and what did you observe?

OP posts:
LittleSwede · 24/07/2019 08:00

Wow, that was an unusual storm! Woke up around 1-ish to what naturalbornwoman described as the strobe effect, but with no thunder at first. Heard the thunder a good while later, then the heavy rain started around 1:30 onwards. Sounded like hail at one point. Quite windy too.

In Hertfordshire.

LittleSwede · 24/07/2019 08:03

No damage here from what I can see!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2019 08:04

It was strobe like and silent to start with because it was mostly very elevated (as well as absolutely gargantuan) so it could be seen from a long way off but too faraway to be heard. I reckon it was visible about 15-20 miles away from our house.

OP posts:
ListenLinda · 24/07/2019 08:07

It kicked off here in W Yorkshire at about 2am. I thought the house was falling down at one point!

The lightning was something else.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2019 08:10

We may have more storms on Thursday night as we transition to cooler weather. I'd bank any sleep you can manage tonight.

OP posts:
BlackeyedGruesome · 24/07/2019 08:12

Windows were firmly shut, curtains drawn, eyes closed for the second lot that came through and was quite loud.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/07/2019 08:15

Been round and opened all the windows again so can cool off. How there is no thunder tonight as it going to be very hot tomorrow here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2019 08:29

Basically there just isn't the instability there tonight.

BBC report about last nights weather, doesn't really do it justice!

Just heard on the radio that there was about 45 thousand strikes overnight in the UK ShockGrin.

Edinburgh finally got some action at about 5am. Lots of lightning and then wind and heavy rain.

tapdancingmum · 24/07/2019 08:54

I slept through it all ☹️. Love a good storm. My FB this morning is all about how loud and long it was and I didn't hear a peep!

BelleSausage · 24/07/2019 08:56

As I said on the other thread it reminds me a lot of the summer storms we used to get in South Florida. You always knew they were coming after a spell of really hot weather because the humidity ramped up all week until the storm broke.

I lay in bed last night wide awake and feeling like a six year old again!
