Thunderstorm watch summer 2019

Seems a bit silly having multiple threads going when it might be quite a lively summer. It looks lively again this week anyhow.

We have met office thunderstorm warnings for the next three days.

Tomorrow storm potential looks to be areas away from the SE, including northern England and the Midlands, but I'm also keeping an eye on the SE for tomorrow night. By mid week the storm potential really grows though and by Wednesday we could have some really cracking storms.

Thunderstorms are notoriously difficult to forecast. Not only whether they will happen, but where they will happen. I'll see if I can find the link to the excellent met office tweet about that earlier this week.

It's all being driven by very hot air being drawn up from Africa, through mainland Europe, which could see temps close to 40C. We could see temperatures touching 30C by Thursday. It's going to be humid and uncomfortable I'm afraid.

I cans till see.loads of flashes, but the map says it all north and east now and moving away. Dog is not happy still.

And it's still so hot. It feel like tropical rainforest out in my garden! No chance of the storm clearing the air!!

Another in East Dorset. It's still going on over an hour later! Not constant like it was but still barely a blink in between each flash. Loving it Grin

And the size of the hailstones! Shock

That was incredible! Continual lightening for over half an hour, with a steady rumble of thunder accompanying it.
Still blimming hot, despite the heavy rain.

Yes heavy rain but no cooler

Lots of rumbling and flashing in the gloucestershire cotswalds

I don't really like storms

I thought it was fireworks and then I thought it was the second coming before I realised it's been lightning for the past 2hrs...in Wiltshire.

It's like an amazing light show up here (midlands)
Had a small amount of rain and now some rumbles.

Watching the lightning map following rumbles outside. No storms forecast here - SW London - according to weather apps but it looks like it might be moving east pretty fast!

A massive thunderclap here just set off car alarms in the street. 😮

Thanks Kitten, I usually love a storm but this has really freaked me out. Never seen anything like it. We initially thought there was a police car parked outside with its flashing lights on, got out of bed to look out the window and realised it was constant lightening. Flashing non stop, like strobe lighting. Then the thunder started which instead of "claps" was a constant loud low roar of noise for half an hour and then down came the rain, so hard and heavy we had it coming through the roof dripping on the floor like a tap!! It honestly felt like the end of the world for a few minutes there. Now the worst has passed and we just have more normal (although still very frequent flashes).

Amazing sheet lightening here with a few rumbles of thunder and some rain. Great to watch all the surrounding fields being illuminated. (Gloucestershire).

South Oxfordshire here - I’ve never seen so much lightning in my life. Just starting to hear rumbles and the rain is coming a little. It’s been like a disco for at least 30 minutes already.

Forgive my stupidity, but I’m really quite scared. If I’m watching the real-time map, and the nearest red circles with yellow centres are still ten miles or so away, is that accurate? So nothing actually hitting here?

A little bit here; Surrey/Kent border. Main action seemed south. I love storms but recently read about freakish stuff like exploding fireballs in a book called ‘Extreme Weather’, so now I’m a bit more cautious 🤔 The real life accounts were all areas quite near me!

Tornados in Manchester also don’t inspire confidence.

Noticed lights through the crack in the curtains, then some rumbling, the a lot more flashing and heavy rumbling, it has passed now, not more than 30 minutes, no rain though, in NW London.

MsJaneAusten · 24/07/2019 01:29

And why do three or four strikes happen at the same time, but tens of miles apart?

Report
BlackeyedGruesome · 24/07/2019 01:33

Thundering in the westmids for a while. Hatches battened down. Wish me luck.
