BBC article here on the metoffice warning. Interesting to read what it says at the end, about berries forming and leaves changing colour early. The leaves are already changing here (Leicester) in that they're going brown/dying.

Heatwave plan. Makes for fascinating reading. Especially the bits about power supply on p31. Poland saw that a couple of years ago. They had big power supply issues due to not being able to cool power plants.

BlardySM · 23/07/2018 15:07

Woke up this morning and my eucalyptus tree has lost 75% of its leaves overnight. Just dropped them out of nowhere.

It is excruciatingly hot. My cheap weather temp thing thinks it’s 36 which I’m not too sure about but it is very very hot. North Essex.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/07/2018 16:36

Poor Eucalyptus. You'd have thought they'd be designed for this kind of weather.

Highest temp today 33.3 in Suffolk. Seeing lots of ominous tweets about temps getting hotter.

It's also been the hottest summer so far since 1961.

I went out on my bike. Boy are car drivers getting Angry (not with me but with each other). I've decided I want to buy some crop tops as I seem to have a permanently sweaty tummy Grin

Perihelion · 23/07/2018 16:57

Am feeling for you all down South. Lived in London as a child and the hot sweaty nights were the worst part of hot weather ( good thunder storms though ). Although it was warm for Edinburgh last night, 18C. About 24C today, with lots of cloud but no east wind so feels warmer than other days.

37C anywhere is horrible to me, but in the UK trying to go to work .....just no.

Is this heat global or just in unusual places? Relatives in the US and Japan have been having extreme heat too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/07/2018 18:15

The jet stream is really really weak. Add it onto climate change and it's having some scary consequences.

www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/22/heatwave-northen-hemisphere-uk-algeria-canada-sweden-whats-the-cause guardian report looks pretty good.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/07/2018 19:48

Anybody in Kent? DD's going camping there on the 4th of August.

Perihelion · 23/07/2018 19:48

Thanks OYBBK for that article. I hadn't realised the extent of the hot weather.
If this isn't an occasional odd year, the implications are really scary.

Skyejuly · 23/07/2018 20:49

This is HORRIBLE!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/07/2018 20:51

I think if I were going camping I'd take a cheap tarp to put under the groundsheet as the grass is so pokey and spikey now.

HesterShaw1 · 23/07/2018 20:52

Head to Cornwall or Brittany. Nice and warm - not hot - with a sea breeze.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/07/2018 20:53

It is scary Peri. The weather set up is very unusual, but climate change appears I think to be pushing it to an extra level.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/07/2018 21:24

Good idea OYBBK I'll get one. 😆

Perihelion · 23/07/2018 22:16

Now been pishing down for the last 2 hours and 15C.....way more normal Grin

HelenaDove · 24/07/2018 01:34

Braintree is HELL ON EARTH.

user546425732 · 24/07/2018 07:22

The leaves on our Virginia creeper are going red already.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2018 08:08

Temps look to reach around 32-33 again in some places, 30c more widely across the south and east.

We could see some thundery showers on Friday, followed by a temporary cool down to the mid 20s through the weekend. After that, the heat looks to build again for many.

GloriaSmud · 24/07/2018 08:12

Metoffice is hinting at thundery showers/storms for us on Friday ~ a couple of good storms would be nice.
Today's thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook.

BiddyPop · 24/07/2018 08:13

Plenty of rain in Dublin again last night - having filled all my big buckets as well, the butt is completely full so from nothing a few days ago I am back up to about 250l.

Much fresher as well - it was still 24 degrees at 8.30pm going to meet DH last night, but only 15 this morning (needed my little cardi!). Expected to get to low-mid 20s today.

magimedi · 24/07/2018 08:45

I would like a clear night on Friday, for the eclipse.

A bit cloudy here, but still v. hot.

Those fires in Greece look terrifying.

user546425732 · 24/07/2018 08:47

We were forecast for thunder last night but there was none at all, we really need the rain ☔️ it's totally yellow isn't it ?

GloriaSmud · 24/07/2018 10:31

Metoffice have already issued a thunderstorm warning for Friday.

Hangingaroundtheportal · 24/07/2018 11:06

A nice bit of rain over the weekend and then the sun to come out by next week for our holiday sounds good Smile

LapdanceShoeshine · 24/07/2018 20:50

This heatwave stretches right across Western Europe. I saw a great map recently (parts of eg central Spain are so hot they’re past dark red into black) but can’t remember where.

Japan had very bad floods recentky & now have extreme high temps.
Laos has floods & now this dam collapse.
Brush/forest fires in Sweden, Latvia & Greece (as well as the Lancashire ones) & also Northern California.
It’s all very worrying Sad
