To complement the Summer weather thread.

Tomorrow could see some thunderstorms in places across England, but by tomorrow evening, the main area of risk appears to be in the central southern areas (revised forecast from earlier) , where frequent lightning and small hail could form in any storms that evolve.

Well I wish I'd seen this thread before hanging out 4 heavy, cumbersome, newly washed rag rugs.
They were nearly dry when I went to bed (in Herts)
Anyone know of a mangle I could borrow?
That aside, that was a spectacular storm overhead here last night.

youarenotkiddingme · 27/05/2018 05:54

Really struggled to sleep as so humid.

Finally dropped off at 1am and it was all around but nothing came overhead.
Woke up this morning to the haziest sandiest air (4.30am) which reminded me of living in the canaries and the Calimas'!

Been up half an hour now and it's very muggy still but there is a slight air of freshness.

brizzledrizzle · 27/05/2018 06:09

The storm moved to overhead, it's stopped now. I won't be going out to play tennis this morning on grass courts though.

Believeitornot · 27/05/2018 06:21

Incredible storm just down the road in Kent/Sussex borders. Having seen the lightning maps I was glad it wasn’t overhead but I did get up to watch. Amazing!!!

Slartybartfast · 27/05/2018 06:24

Near you @Believeitornot, - huge thunder but if there was lightning I slept through it. Ddog scared

GloriaSmud · 27/05/2018 07:59

BBC report on the storms overnight ~ around 15,000 lightning strikes recorded Shock

AdeliciousRex · 27/05/2018 08:33

I missed the big storm Sad I've been looking forward to it all week but slept with earplugs in.

DH apparently thought it was end of days and hid under the blanket. Useless!

TheClitterati · 27/05/2018 08:40

@AdeliciousRex don't blame the earplugs. There was very little thunder where we were (Kent). More lightning than I thought possible but mostly without thunder.
All very surreal.

grounddown · 27/05/2018 08:46

Huge storm started around 7am in West Midlands, definitely decreased in intensity but still the odd rumble and plenty of rain.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/05/2018 08:47

At the time I posted it was mental but the rain did’t actually last long, kooshbin. It was just very very heavy when it did come down.

Can’t see much mention of flooding, but seem to be lots of people without power.

Part 2 started just as I went to bed, but I must have missed most of that.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/05/2018 08:50

When I woke it the middle of the night. There was a bright band of lightening strikes across the middle of the country. Lots of in cloud lightening and some visible streaks.had to get up to shut DDs window.

DS would not go to sleep last night. A storm in the middle of the night. One at 6 that woke D's. Rain on my ceiling. Got to investigate the Loft later an autistic boy who has not had enough sleep. Me who also has not had enough sleep. A vv long day ahead.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/05/2018 09:00

It looks like most of the lightning was cloud-cloud, hence the muted sound effects.
Did anyone out Shropshire way get any damage? Any hail reports?

There is a risk of more storms building again today, especially if clag from overnight storms clears. I think the risk is highest over central southern England and the Midlands. Lots of CAPE (convective available potential energy) by mid Afternoon. See photo. For a storm you need heat/energy, humidity, and instability.

Met office ware renewed warnings out for flooding. here

Had hail here, but I’m not in Shropshire.

The first storm was much louder than the second. First rumble of thunder continued for about 5 mins.

GloriaSmud · 27/05/2018 09:14

OYBBK ~ more storms to look forward to later on for us then! It's warm here (Leicester ~19.8C) with hazy sunshine/clouds so think things are beginning to build already.

grounddown · 27/05/2018 09:16

Huge bangs, rain and big flashes of lightning here (west midlands)

lubeybooby · 27/05/2018 09:30

OYBBK Shropshire here, we had brief hail and winds were crazy. Neighbour has a tree down (but it was old and rotten) and our (weighted down!) trampoline has done the classic migration into next doors hedge. However, it was very windy all yesterday and worsened through the night so I don't know if it was storm-related or just the normal-but-excessive wind. We are very exposed on the hill so the wind does get a bit mad up here.

The thunderstorm woke me up at about 5 am, going by the lightning map had been active for about 30 mins before that. I've only just stopped hearing thunder about 20 mins ago. All peaceful now

grounddown · 27/05/2018 09:33

Yes all stopped here too, birds are emerging again.

DreadlocksMadeMeHappy · 27/05/2018 09:36

Leicestershire....

Powys/Shropshire borders. Spectacular lightning and thunder first thing and still rumbling on to a lesser extent. Very wet with lots of local flooding.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/05/2018 09:52

lubey do you mind if I pm you please?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/05/2018 09:58

So there's still potential this afternoon and evening. This afternoon I think the south Midlands are most at risk for homegrown storms, tonight there may be some imports from France in the SE.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/05/2018 15:54

Arse. There is another one in the way. Thanks to @RustyBear I know it is coming! Thanks!

Funnily enough I saw some clouds that looked like they had potential. They have gone further north and kicked off.
