and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Oops. Even my rudimentary knowledge of volcanoes is enough to know that that's bad.

I would have thought the clue would be in the name 'fissure erruption'. But maybe not.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 10:31

Rather than a very crude attempt at representing a flank eruption?

video of flight over eruption

Pretty cool :)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/08/2014 11:08

That is pretty cool.

JerseySpud · 29/08/2014 12:15

WE HAVE LAVA!!!

According to twitter

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 13:15

RUV update Aviation alert is back down to orange but Bárðarbunga has had another 4.8 earthquake at its caldera.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 13:35

two min video talking about the Krafla fires which this may be become like.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 13:53

Whilst things look pretty quiet with what seems to be mostly steam at present there has just been a 5.2 earthquake. So still lots of restlessness.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 14:40

According to twitter the overnight eruption stopped at 4am. However this seems very unlikely to be the end.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 17:24

summary of today from Iceland Civil protection.

IrenetheQuaint · 29/08/2014 17:58

I'm just getting on a flight from Canada back to the UK. On the way out we flew straight over Iceland - let's see if we follow the same route on the way back!

An update on Jón Frímann's blog. Am Shock where he quotes RUV News:

"According to Rúv News the earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano so far is equal to whole year of earthquake in Iceland. In normal year there are around 12.000 to 16.000 earthquakes during the whole year."

That's a lotta earthquakes!

That's huge Gloria!

GloriaSmud · 30/08/2014 09:12

There have been a couple of bigger EQs this morning ~ methinks this is going to take a loooooong time before it all calms down.

Baering (who brought us this for looking at seismic activity, have now got this for us to play with! (use the mouse to look in closer/do a 'fly over' of the area etc)

GloriaSmud · 30/08/2014 09:17

And another update from the IMO, mentioning the EQs around the caldera rim of Bárðarbunga.

Sadly the new link doesn't work on the ipad :(

You are right Gloria, this could rumble on for sometime. It seemed a bit quieter overnight.

Newbiecrafter · 30/08/2014 09:24

Have there been any events/updates overnight? I haven't found any, and can't get into any webcam sites.

Thanks
Xx

Newbiecrafter · 30/08/2014 09:25

Oops, sorry. Cross post with your updates. Thanks.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 30/08/2014 09:49

Ok, it seems there was a 5.4 EQ this morning, quite shallow too at 2.9km back at the caldera.
It's astonishing how much shaking this volcano can take!

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 30/08/2014 09:50

Oh how did I miss Gloria's second post?! It says that in there. Durrr.

Newbiecrafter · 30/08/2014 10:05

I'm on an ipad and it's not refreshing properly this morning!

What are the chances that the eruption yesterday was enough to take the pressure off to stop anything further happening? And that the new EQ's are just everything settling down again?

Xx

nannynick · 30/08/2014 12:16

There is a new available. Shows Bardabunga 1 Cam (from Mila), Quakes list from 3dBulge plus location map from 3dBulge and some other charts.
Works on iPad (when viewing Youtube from within Safari browser).

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 30/08/2014 12:35

Newbie, very unlikely to settle it down. That was a tiny eruption and it seems to have been a smaller eruption than the one that happened under the glacier on the 23rd.

nannynick · 30/08/2014 14:20

Latest update at 12:00 UTC from IMO (link goes to earthice.hi.is)
"GPS measurements show continued horizontal movements north of Vatnajökull due to formation of the dyke intrusion on the northern edge of the ice-cap."

What does that mean? Does it mean that the something is moving upwards towards surface?

MirandaWest · 30/08/2014 16:09

I am travelling to America via Iceland in mid to late September. Anyone any idea how long volcano activity is likely to go on for?
