and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Here are a couple of screenshots of the Thingvellir camera that I've snapped recently. The first one is from September and the second one from last night. The lights are quite faint & much harder to see in a still - you get a better sense of it from the movement when you are watching live.

This is what it looks like normally when there is no aurora (just now):

Armchair aurora watching thread started in the Weather folder. Back to volcano gawking...

pearlgirl · 10/11/2014 23:38

Had a great time watching the aurora on the Thingvellir cam - DH a bit fed up as both times we have been to Iceland there has been lots of cloud and nothing to see at night and when the sky was clear the aurora wasn't active.

Some excitement on volcano cafe about the sudden inflation of the Bardabunga caldera - turns out it was the IMO team digging it out of the snow & raising it 1.5m. Grin

SilentAllTheseYears · 12/11/2014 05:55

Why were they digging it out of the snow??? Puzzled!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2014 07:59

Presumably the instrument readings won't be accurate and will eventually vanish if they get covered by too much snow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2014 08:00

That is very funny DustBunny Grin

DustBunnyFarmer · 12/11/2014 08:14

Sorry silent - "it" was the GPS that was becoming buried, affecting accuracy & transmission of data.

GloriaSmud · 12/11/2014 10:08

Oh that's funny Grin
You can see the sudden rise in the top left graph here.

Latest report from RUV here ~ lava is covering a huge area now. And JonFr also has some thoughts on what is going on in the volcano here.

OK, now I've just told all of MN that I am a dumb blonde....off to name change!

I was tired, OK? Grin*

*and I know I take things too literally at times.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2014 12:36

Don't worry Silent. It happens to us all Grin

mankyscotslass · 13/11/2014 18:58

Lots of earthquakes recorded today here

LadySybilLikesCake · 13/11/2014 19:01

There's going to be nooooooo volcano eruption Sad We're flying to Iceland just before Christmas and we'd be gutted.

nannynick · 13/11/2014 19:28

Latest live stream

Alas nothing to see at the moment. Think the Mila cameras are down.

nannynick · 13/11/2014 19:29

Or maybe it is just too dark to see anything.

GloriaSmud · 14/11/2014 12:26

They seem to be having technical problems.
The usual mila webcams ( Bárðarbunga 1 and Bárðarbunga 2) seem to be working OK.

Wow, amazing films, nannynick.
Looks like someone is being creative ~ lava jewellery anyone?!

Newbiecrafter · 17/11/2014 19:22

Hi everyone.
I've been following this thread since it started as well as the Jon fr blog.

Someone posted a video taken today, here it is. This is HUGE!

Xxx

GloriaSmud · 17/11/2014 20:11

Wow Newbie ~ the footage seems to get better with each new video that comes along!

Newbiecrafter · 17/11/2014 22:28

It's very impressive isn't it?!!

I was really surprised by how high the lava has become around the fissure. It makes the lava look like it's bubbling away in a bowl, if that makes sense.

Xxx

CBBC Newsround had a short clip this morning. Wonder if that means media will pick up more on the effects the volcano is having on environment.

GloriaSmud · 18/11/2014 10:35

'Tis on the BBC website here as well.

Newbie ~ I think it could possibly be the birth of a new volcano. If it doesn't form into one (a volcano), it's just exciting to watch what the planet has done for millions of years!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/11/2014 12:42

That is very cool :)
