and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

So is a Laki type eruption or a double volcano eruption worse???!

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 28/08/2014 18:25

Errr..... One doesn't necessarily preclude the other I don't think.

Do you prefer a big ash event or a big sulphur dioxide event?
Let's hope neither!

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 28/08/2014 18:28

The OU have a free course about volcanism in Iceland that I didn't know about [[http://www.open.edu/openlearn/science-maths-technology/science/geology/iceland-ridge-plume-and-basalt?track=4 here]] I'm going to have a bit of a crash course tonight I think.

GlaceDragonflies · 28/08/2014 18:34

I think I'll be looking at that tonight as well. The course author is currently in Iceland, I follow him on Twitter.
Meanwhile, it's looking ominous isn't it? (and I don't just mean for air travel)

Newbiecrafter · 28/08/2014 18:52

Air travel aside, what is the impact of an eruption for Iceland and Europe?

Would it have any effect on climate, weather or the rest of the world?

Sorry if they're silly questions, but curious to know as i never heard anything apart from air travel disruption after Eyjaf erupted. Mind you, I do tend to watch cbeebies most of the time and they don't really cover that sort of stuff Wink

Thanks again for your insights and thoughts. It is fascinating and a bit scary!

Xxx

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 28/08/2014 20:23

The videos are very short!

My two main concerns (other than perhaps aviation) are for Iceland if it is a large scale ash fall event, this could also affect some parts of Scotland, Scandinavia to a much lesser extent and a temporary climate change, especially in the unlikely event of a large sulphur dioxide emitting rift eruption. Laki the infamous example caused a profound cooling that winter.

But of course none of these scenarios may happen.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 28/08/2014 21:29

So much science and still yet so many unknowns.

Nature really is extraordinary.

Any chance of the NATO summit next week being cancelled?!

GloriaSmud · 28/08/2014 22:15

Today's update from the Icelandic Met Office. And here's what VolcanoCafe think ominously titled, 'The Calm before the Storm.' Carl on there thinks that there are '3 different volcanoes interacting and there is just no way we predict anything any longer.'

I need to fly from USA to Heathow on Saturday, can it please nor erupt before then.

GlaceDragonflies · 29/08/2014 06:30

Back to red again after a fissure eruption started at 2am north of bardarbunga.

GloriaSmud · 29/08/2014 06:32

A small fissure eruption started during the night. From the IMO:

29th August 2014 02:45 - An eruption north of Dyngjujökull
An eruption started in Holuhraun north of Dyngjujökull at around 00:02. Seismic tremor was observed on all seismic stations and the web camera installed in the area by Mila has showed some nice pictures of the eruption. It is a small fissure eruption and at 02:40 AM the activity appears to have decreased.

And so the Aviation Colour code for Bárðarbunga is back to red.

Thanks Gloria,I'm on my phone and couldn't share the link.

GloriaSmud · 29/08/2014 06:33

X posted with Grace!
I'm off to have a look at the webcams!

Eve you'll just get diverted round Iceland I expect.

nannynick · 29/08/2014 06:34

Small fisdure eruption overnight.
See www.volcanocafe.wordpress.com for a picture.

Seems to have stopped. Can not see on webcams.

Time lapse video of the small fissure eruption that occurred overnight.

GlaceDragonflies · 29/08/2014 06:44

Gloria, so we do.

Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seat belts and hold tight. We have no idea what thrills, spills,or calamities lie ahead.

Here is hoping that this is not the start of something that is going to cause big problems for the people living in Iceland.

RedToothBrush · 29/08/2014 06:53

Here is hoping that this is not the start of something that is going to cause big problems for the people living in Iceland.

Quite... I hope we do not get too many people making a fuss about their flight plans in this context...

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 07:45

Some nice little pics on ukww thread

Being lazy in the hols I only woke up 10 mins ago and feel I have a lot of catching up to do!!

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 07:54

So at the moment it looks like a very small c. 1km long fissure eruption. Speculating it's perhaps as a result of the magma encountering a block at Askja.

It looks like there was a small subglacial eruption on the 23rd that lasted only a short time. The Iceleand Met office really know their stuff don't they!

We just don't know what will happen next.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 07:57

Glaces time lapse link suggests it's between 100m-300m long.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 08:00

RUV update.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 29/08/2014 09:32

Oh dear oh dear. CNN have clearly grabbed a child's drawing of a volcano by accident and forgot to put a real graphic in because surely they can't be that ignorant can they?
