and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Miranda. Anything from stopping right now to potentially 2 or 3 years.... maybe even longer!

nannynick · 30/08/2014 16:19

Could be weeks, months, years.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 30/08/2014 17:04

As the others have said. No one has a clue.
latest scenario thoughts

Nannynick - it means the crack is getting wider.

GloriaSmud · 30/08/2014 20:00

Bárðarbunga news in English here, includes photos taken yesterday of possibly new cracks in the ice.

@gisli on twitter reckons they might have found schroedingers volcano, says will know in next few hours.

GlaceDragonflies · 30/08/2014 21:40

Sorry @gislio
Chap on twitter who knows what he is talking about

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 30/08/2014 21:47

Is that like the cat who doesn't know if it's dead or alive?

GlaceDragonflies · 31/08/2014 07:32

Yes, cat in a box and it is both alive and dead at the same time

GlaceDragonflies · 31/08/2014 07:33

A new fissure eruption has started here

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 07:42

Pretty!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 07:46

Apparently the lava samples indicate it is fresh lava from a sub-crustal source. Does this mean its from the mantle rather than Bárðarbunga?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 07:58

info on lava composition

Looks like they think it's from one of the volcanoes but they don't know which one. High content of sulphur but it stayed mostly locked up in the rock.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/08/2014 09:19

Not sure if this 3D model from the IMO has been linked to yet. I can't see a link for it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 09:24

It was posted somewhere yesterday Rafa, its the one that wont work on my ipad. Cant get it to work on my pc either :(

Apparently the aviation code is back at red. Unfortunately all of the icelandic links seem to be going down for me I presume due to overload?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 09:25

If you are on fb, there is a video of todays eruption here

nannynick · 31/08/2014 09:27

Ah OYBBK you beat me to it, was just about to post a link to that video.

On Youtube LiveStream you can see it at about 2.5 hours ago (scroll back the video), so around 7am UK time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 09:29

Grin i think we will all be repeating each others links - its so exciting! Apparently the fissure has grown a little in length to 1.5km.

GloriaSmud · 31/08/2014 09:33

That's excellent, Rafa! It shows how everything's moved over time and all the EQ's that have happened around the edge of the caldera as well.

Can't see much on the webcams at the moment ~ I think the stormy weather forecast for Iceland has arrived. The Bárðarbunga 2 camera is really being hit by the high winds.

Looking at 3dBulge at quakes 2.0+ North East of the Black Spot (is that a lake? Is it Lake Askja?) there is a cluster of quakes typically 1km-10km. Could that be another fissure starting?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 09:37

ooo earthquake vis working for me know. Very cool!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/08/2014 09:45

I think it's a different link to the one that won't work on your ipad, OYBBK. You might have 2 that don't work now. Grin

Can't get the webcam to work this morning. Keep getting 'server not found' messages.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 12:05

Grin Rafa!

eruption 10-20 times bigger than Friday nights.

Still images look pretty spectacular. Still quite a small eruption over all though. It's the kind of level that is nice - no danger for anyone but pretty.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 12:20

One of the camera feeds on to youtube is still up. Sadly though the weather is so bad you can't see anything.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2014 12:28

Ooo, it made a proper embedded thingy. Unexpected.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/08/2014 12:39

On the subject of volcano pictures, there's some stunning pictures of the Mt Tavurvur eruption on Friday.

This one is my favourite but there's a few videos showing the lava too.

Hopefully the ash hasn't caused too much damage and the locals can get back to normal as soon as possible.
