and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

It is very exciting Gloria, and very beautiful! There's talk over on Jon fr that this is the birth of a sheild volcano, which I think was mentioned way back on here.

The really fascinating thing for me is, how has this volcano not collapsed with all the huge earthquakes that have been taking place. Thank goodness it hasn't but how much more can it take.

There was a bit of news on the bbc website saying that the lava field is about the same size as manhattan. [sshock]

I know someone who is going to reykjavic in a couple of weeks, lucky so and so, but do you think I should warn her about the SO2 levels just in case she has asthma?

GloriaSmud · 19/11/2014 10:36

Newbie ~ it's amazing how much the caldera's taking and where/when/how it'll end.
It might be wise (even if your friend doesn't have asthma and if this carries on the way it is) to warn her that the air quality on some days might not be that great. I guess it depends which way the wind's blowing on those days. There's a page here (Google translation a bit dodgy) that's from the Scientific Advisory Boards meeting and there's also gas forecasts here on the IMO's website that might help.

Thanks Gloria. I'll send he really the links. Xxx

GloriaSmud · 21/11/2014 16:54

JonFr's blog entry for Wednesday mentions there are increasing amounts of SO2 and mbl has a report here about the affects on nature.
Latest reports here on the eruption from Iceland Review.

Something happened about an hour ago... think the wall got a dent in it and let the lava flow out more. Seems to now be creating a new lava river.

Does anyone have a link to the latest live stream please?

I'm on an ipad and can't watch the mila cams for some reason, so usually watch the stream on youtube by nlock but that one ended and can't see a new one.

Many thanks.

GloriaSmud · 22/11/2014 12:12

Newbie ~ does this work? It seems to be webcam no1.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 22/11/2014 12:15

JonFr's blog mentions a bit of a crater collapse.

Streamup alas does not work on ipad currently. Have yet to find a current youtube live stream.

nannynick · 22/11/2014 20:31

Found one -

Newbiecrafter · 22/11/2014 21:03

Thank you both. Thanks

I'll check the links in a mo.

I'm very addicted to bardarbunga and have been following this thread pretty much since it started and Jon fr's blog for about the same amount of time. Not sure if that makes me sad! Lol!

Nannynick, was what you saw last night confirmed anywhere? I've not looked at the Jon fr blog yet, but will do in a mo. Is the wall you mentioned, the newly built up bit around the erupting fissure?

Quick question for you, is the lava that's spewing out at the moment, taking ac?ount of what's entering the system from below? There's a lot of mention on the other site about this, but I,m not sure I understand it.

Also, if all this stuff is coming up from many km's way underground, is this creating a cavern down there, which could collapse? If 1cubic km of 'stuff' has come out, what's taking it's place deep down?

Sorry if that's a nonsensical question. My head is full of those. :)

Xxx

Newbiecrafter · 22/11/2014 21:06

Oops, sorry Gloria, you said the collapse was confirmed and I missed it so asked again.

Newbiecrafter · 22/11/2014 21:11

Gloria, that link needs flash which the ipad doesn't have but I'll try and use that one on my laptop. Nannynicks one does get through but says there's a technical difficulty. I'll keep trying.

Thankyou both again.

nannynick · 22/11/2014 22:32

New link, if using Desktop computer then has option to see Cam1 or Cam2.

nannynick · 22/11/2014 22:39

Not sure if it was a collapse or if it was just splashing over due to the run of earth quakes at the time.

GloriaSmud · 01/12/2014 17:20

Still here watching this! After a brief pause with not many strong earthquakes ~ the area has been having a bit of a rock and roll with some quite hefty ones today.

I'm glad I found this thread again. I need to check in more regularly as I'm not getting as much time to keep tabs on VolcanoCafe.

GloriaSmud · 02/12/2014 21:10

Latest reports from mbl and IcelandReview.

GloriaSmud · 31/12/2014 16:24

As we approach the end of the year, this is still going on and has been now for 4 months! mbl have an 'eruption in pictures' section here.

Also take a look at this article - Icelandmag which has a video from 24-Dec embedded.

pearlgirl · 31/12/2014 18:33

I keep checking up on this too - can't believe it is still rumbling on - according to Jon Fr there have been earthquakes in the last days very close to where we stayed in the summer.

GloriaSmud · 03/02/2015 21:01

And this goes on and on and has been for 5 months now!
Latest from mbl and IcelandReview (groan ~ Good Morning America with their 'Game of Drones' broadcast!)

Another update on JonFr's blog including a link to some new Icelandic webcams.

Marking place, as I have only just noticed this thread and my son is off to Iceland at half term - will point him in the direction of the webcams

GloriaSmud · 03/02/2015 21:13

Am mucho Envy of your son, Dotty!
DD1 is hoping to start A-level Geography in September and keeps 'taunting' me with the trip to Iceland that they do and that she might get to visit the place before I do!

GloriaSmud · 02/03/2015 21:13

According to Jonfr's blog, the eruption at Holuhraun has ended although gas pollution continues to be a problem. 'Tis not all good news though going by this article in today's IcelandReview.
