and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Youtube Livestream (new address as previous feed stopped overnight)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2014 07:28

Thanks nannynick :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2014 07:34

Big quakes still at bardabunga. 4.9 and a 5.5 overnight. It's still a very grumpy volcano!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2014 15:52

Reports of a km wide cauldron formed in the glacier south of the current eruption. Will try and find out more in a bit.

GlaceDragonflies · 03/09/2014 16:05

An increase in harmonic tremors has led to scientists being advised to leave the area around Holuhraun

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2014 16:43

Apparently its not actually a cauldron but as far as I can tell a rift has formed in the ground under the glacier which is causing a km wide depression in the glacier.

teeny bit more info

It does seem that the next part of the story is about to happen please let it wait til I get back from my meeting tonight

nannynick · 03/09/2014 17:29

Noticed the tiny tremors this morning on the DYN sceisemonitor drumplot.
Interesting to see they continued. Could mean something will happen later, possibly 3am Iceland time as past few nights that has been an active time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2014 17:31

Well spotted!

I might sneak my ipad into bed tonight as I've not been sleeping well. Might as well do something fun.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2014 22:24

volcano cafe update talking about the potential for bardabunga to go boom.

nannynick · 04/09/2014 04:44

New Youtube LiveStream (old one got cut off after 30+ hours streaming)

nannynick · 04/09/2014 04:56

Big quake at caldera at 03:45 UTC. Could be a 4.5/5. Showing as smaller on 3dBulge but expect it to be manually upgraded as big on IDYN.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/09/2014 07:45

Thanks nannynick.

Grateful that the weather is so quiet at the moment so that I can spend my spare Internet time volcano gazing.

nannynick · 04/09/2014 08:14

Another big one at 06:13 UTC. Possibly a 4.3. Again at the caldera.

Too much fog/mist to be able to see anything on the cameras.

nannynick · 04/09/2014 08:46

Whilst the livestream has no visibility, check out the stunning shots of lava on this blog from the team onsite doing documentary for BBC2 Natural World.

What a great blog nannynick, thanks for linking to it :)

AFewFallenLeaves · 04/09/2014 09:10

Interesting thread I may just name-change!

BardarbungaBardarbing · 04/09/2014 09:13

Done it.

GloriaSmud · 04/09/2014 09:54

Excellent blog, nannynick and a documentary to watch out for in the future.
Grin bardarbunga ~ a useful name change if/when things happen involving that volcano!

Fab name change Bardar!!

BardarbungaBardarbing · 04/09/2014 10:40

It was also to signan a move away from circular threads on the Scottish Independence referendum (..and yet I still went back!)

But no more: I'll observe nature instead and preserve my sanity.

nannynick · 04/09/2014 12:17

Looks like Mila have their own YouTube stream now.

GloriaSmud · 04/09/2014 14:01

Bardarbunga ~ ah politics. Can be interesting but does have a tendency to raise the blood pressure!

It's probably a good thing for Mila to have their own YouTube stream, nannynick, as the webcams went through moments of not connecting/overload.

On the volcano front, there seems to have been a lot of smaller earthquakes around Bárðarbunga over the last few hours. And Katla seems to be getting jealous of the attention being given to Bárðarbunga and having a move about as well!

nannynick · 04/09/2014 16:30

Yes, that's why others had created the livestreams on Youtube... think someone on VolcanoCafe first did it. So good that Mila have setup their own as Youtubes servers can take the load involved when there are good shots. Alas still no good images at the moment.

Was there ever any update as to what those harmonics were yesterday that caused the scientists to be evacuated? Noticed that ASK had the same thing late yesterday, but neither is showing it now. DYN has some noise on it though... 08:02-08:06, 11:35-11:37, 14:36-14:38 - what is that, wind, scientist making sure the seismometer is ok?

Just about to listen to something on Radio4 about the volcano.
