and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Image showing that noise I referred to on the seismometer.

BBC4 Inside Science - with luck this should link to iPlayer once available (from 5pm today?).

Two new erupting fissures have opened up!

GloriaSmud · 05/09/2014 12:24

Someone on volcanocafe last night thought they saw something happening on the webcams but was debating whether it was more scientists in the area ~ wonder whether it was the beginning of the new fissure. They've just posted this photo to show the distance between the fissures.

Nannynick ~ I'll have to listen to Inside Science.
I don't think they know what caused the harmonics but after the scientists evacuated, it dropped back down after that.

Nothing's been mentioned on the blogs about the events you noticed but 'dyn' is the closest seismic station to the erupting fissures, so it could have been picking up on what's going on there.

And now the area has been closed to all.

Interesting shot of the relationship between the current 3 fissures. Starting to look like the Krafla fires?

creeping up to glacier

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/09/2014 15:28

This really does seem to be a significant escalation in the situation. Conductivity in melt water is increasing perhaps indicating a subglacial eruption starting. The 'cauldron' is increasing in depth, suggesting that the graben is becoming bigger and is likely to start erupting. We also still have a lot of SO2 being emitted.

GloriaSmud · 05/09/2014 17:22

Report here about how close it's getting to the glacier.

Dont you love the diversity you get in eruptions. Even in the same incident they are so different.

GloriaSmud · 05/09/2014 20:42

I'm amazed at the changes that go on ~ there's hours of not producing a lot of lava and then at other times, huge amounts and height to the fountains as well!
There are some excellent pictures in the Daily Mail here.

Helicopter Tour video (turn sound down!)
Unclear exactly when this was taken but likely to be yesterday or day before.

nannynick · 05/09/2014 22:39

R2D2 Doppler/Dual-Polarization Radar is flashing it's orange lights. Least that is the colour they look like in the darkness lit by the lava. Bit of a distraction on the webcam though handy to confirm that the camera image is actually changing, can be hard to tell at times.

I've been watching r2d2 this evening. Very cool :)

Newbiecrafter · 06/09/2014 09:56

Morning everyone.

Here is an image showing how close the heat is getting to the glacier

Also, another amazing pic of a photographer. Not sure if it is real but, if it is, he is mad!!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2014 10:18

I think we could be looking at a glacial flood soon. This could cause sig disruption to Icelanders.

Think that photo is at Kilauea.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2014 14:02

It is bring reported that scientists in today's news briefing are saying that the caldera at Bardabunga has dropped 15m. It is being debated over at volcano cafe - do they mean the actual caldera? The glacier above the caldera or do they mean the new cauldron. If they mean the actual caldera then I think it might mean trouble. To me it seems unlikely it is the glacier melting to that amount other wise we would already be seeing flood.
They say this hasn't been seen in Iceland since 1783.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2014 15:04

Ok, we have it officially here the caldera floor has dropped by 15m.

This does seem to imply that the caldera may collapse entirely. This would cause glacial flooding and be a phreatic eruption (that means when water gets into magma and it instantly vapourises causing explosions). if this occurs it could be a very large eruption and cause significant ash emission.

Let's hope it doesn't.

Has the evening video been linked to yet? Volcano at Night, 4th Sept 2014

GloriaSmud · 06/09/2014 19:40

Shock Wow Nannynick!

Latest from volcanocafe. Jón Frímann posted yesterday that he now expects there to be an eruption from Bárðarbunga. Not good developments in the last few hours

RUV report here about the subsidence in the Bárðarbunga caldera.

That video is awesome. How it's changed in a week.

nannynick · 06/09/2014 20:32

Another video think it is a flyby done today.
