and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

:) Gloria. (I join back into the school run madness tomorrow. Oh woe)

scroll down for pretty night pictures it's certainly been a busy little eruption over night.

nannynick · 01/09/2014 08:51

Rainbow, could it be due to the various gasses being released?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2014 08:55

That would make sense nannynick.

scousadelic · 01/09/2014 08:59

Please can anybody give me any thoughts about travel to USA (few posts above) Is there much chance it'll fizzle out or hold off for a while? I'm really panicked now as you can't really make other plans to get back easily

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2014 09:42

Scousadelic - we have absolutely no way of knowing for certain I'm afraid.

If it continues as it is - no problems for flights.

If we have a small eruption at Bardabunga - no issue.

If we have a big big eruption at Bardabunga then ash could be lifted to aviation heights. Jet stream forecast only goes out to the 17th but after this coming weekend I think any ash would be taken over Scandinavia.

On the basis of the above analysis I wouldnt worry too much. There is a chance of a problem, but I think its low enough that you can enjoy your holiday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2014 09:47

nannynick - some are postulating that they are 'earthquake lights'. Id never heard of them before and had to do a quick google.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2014 09:48

although google suggests they are more orb like, so I may be misunderstanding.

OYBBK ~ DDs started back at school last Thursday. In a way having only 2 days last week was quite nice as it feels like a gentle 'easing back into the school routine' but on the other hand, it was a bit of a shock this morning getting up and realising that there was a full school week ahead!

There's some info on Earthquake lights here. Makes interesting reading.
Weather's closed in and can't see anything on the webcams at the moment. I thought I could see an orange dot through the greyness on webcam no2 and then realised it was a spot on my computer monitor!

Couple of powerful EQs this morning around the rim of the Bardabunga caldera ~ a 5.3 occurred 40 minutes ago.

There were lights on some of the overnight pictures yesterday because geophysicists were installing sensors.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2014 15:48

Seems that the current fissure eruption is rapidly subsiding. I'm sure that isn't end of story though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2014 17:04

Seems that there was a pretty large output of sulphur dioxide from this eruption. noaa images to look at are current and the previous one.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2014 19:40

You now need to look a little further back in time to see the S02. Eruption has got going properly again.

GloriaSmud · 01/09/2014 20:36

GloriaSmud · 02/09/2014 11:53

Excellent set of photos of the eruption here. And an update on RUV here ~ apparently the type of lava being produced is "Slabby Pahoehoe lava!"

Hello everyone.

The youtube live stream isn't showing anything for me. Has the activity stopped or has it moved out of the cameras line of sight?

Thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/09/2014 13:26

Activity is still going strongly newbie :) I've kind of given up on the livestreaming somewhat as it keeps going wrong for me.

Love the vortices on photo 13 of Glorias link!

JerseySpud · 02/09/2014 19:31

Ah. Yeah. That would do it OYBBK

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/09/2014 19:34

Grin jersey.

A lot more SO2 has been produced compared to yesterday. Nasty stuff.
