Potential for severe storms tomorrow.

Apologies for a bit of a replica thread but I wanted to highlight the issue clearly.

Many people will have seen the lurid headlines in the express. They are wildly over egging the situation but nevertheless there is a possibility that some severe storms will initiate tomorrow.

Main risks if such storms do develop are large hail, cloud-ground lightning, severe straightline winds and potentially a small chance of tornadoes developing.

Whilst many places in southern central through to northern central England are at risk of general thunderstorms it does at the moment - and this may well change - look like areas around Cambridgshire, Bedfordshire, through to Lincolnshire and south Yorkshire may see more severe storms.

Can I suggest to you that if thunderstorms do develop bear in mind that they may become severe and keep in mind that you may need to seek shelter. Please also do, if it is absolutely safe only, grab photos of any hail stones or damage as these are invaluable to TORROs research.

Of course nothing may happen other than some rumbles of thunder. Forecasting is not an exact science and thunderstorms are especially complex to forecast, however it is worth knowing about the potential for development.

It's rainy in Essex now, hope it's gone by 1pm in time for the party!

CatsCantTwerk · 07/06/2014 10:35

I'm just watching Lightning Maps and it seems to be south east getting the lightning at the minute. Still waiting here in Lincs. We have had a few heavy downpours this morning and a few gusts but nothing major to report yet :)

Mckayz · 07/06/2014 10:38

The rain has started. Yuck

tak1ngchances · 07/06/2014 10:39

Heavy rain in SW London now. No lightning yet. Hope it clears the air, it was so muggy and sticky this morning

ThisFenceIsComfy · 07/06/2014 10:50

No thunder and lightning here in Wiltshire, just heavy rain that has now eased. I'm a little disappointed :)

GloriaSmud · 07/06/2014 10:51

Heavy, thundery-type rain's just started here (Leicester) but not heard anything in the way of thunder and lightning. Raintoday shows a good line of rain forming from the SE through to Wales with some heavy stuff over Oxford, that looks like it might be heading our way.

SpottyTeacakes · 07/06/2014 11:45

We had some great thunder and a few flashes. Seems to be brightening up now just in time for our fete Smile

JillJ72 · 07/06/2014 12:05

Wow, looking at the radar, all the heavy rain is north of us. We've had rain this morning, but steady, not heavy or torrential. The sun is peeking out from behind the clouds here. 19c in our garden room and the same in our kitchen, so warm, muggy. Stopping for lunch (base painting newly plastered walls).

renewed weather warnings

The clearer the skies behind the front, the more likely we are to see some decent lively storms this afternoon.

What about my oybbk? Met office app shows warm and sunny from two

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 13:24

spotty, I think your turn may be over now. I think it will be areas well inland that see the storms.

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 07/06/2014 13:26

Thanks it's still looking lovely outside Smile

SpottieDottie · 07/06/2014 14:58

Well inland here and lovely and sunny - no rain since 11am, not sure how long it will last - probably 2 1/2 hours as then I will want to hang laundry out!

JillJ72 · 07/06/2014 15:19

Glorious here Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 15:29

Have to say nothing is developing on the radar behind the cold front as of yet!

MaureenMLove · 07/06/2014 15:33

Er, I'm still at the church and there isn't a cloud in the sky!! OYBBK, I think I might be just a little bit upset. This isn't what was supposed to happen! Grin

Myfanwyprice · 07/06/2014 16:09

Just home was ds's birthday, and the weather was perfect, so relieved!

CatsCantTwerk · 07/06/2014 16:28

Clear skies here in Lincoln.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 16:34

Hmmm, I did say potential.........

It is really interesting that so far the secondary home grown storms have in fact so far not grown anywhere. The initial band of storms behaved pretty much as predicted and is still giving a lot of rain further north. There is going to be a lot of discussion amongst forecasters about why the home grown storms haven't initiated. I'm looking forward to reading it :)

It's a beautiful day behind the cold front Grin

Was lovely here, verging on hot!

digerd · 07/06/2014 19:30

S.Herts.

After one downpour and some rumblings of thunder this morning, it has been sunny and very warm. Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 20:18

Yes, the first half of the day went pretty much as forecast. It was the second half that went awry. The ingredients to make some decent storms just didn't quite come together.

Ah well, I did get my storm this morning AND I got a lovely sunny afternoon and evening. Best of both worlds :)

Cracking thunderstorm this morning. It got so dark we had to put the lights on.

Then, as storm was moving away, the birds began singing again. And then I heard the unmistakeable sound of a light aircraft. What on earth was someone in a tiny aircraft doing up there?! Hopefully they knew what they were doing.

Mid-morning, DH was walking past one of the big churches locally, and saw there were the "Wedding Cars Only" signs out. As there was no activity at the time, we assume that it was an afternoon wedding. What weather for the bride and groom to wake up to this morning! But happily it was all sunshine this afternoon.
