Potential for severe storms tomorrow.

Apologies for a bit of a replica thread but I wanted to highlight the issue clearly.

Many people will have seen the lurid headlines in the express. They are wildly over egging the situation but nevertheless there is a possibility that some severe storms will initiate tomorrow.

Main risks if such storms do develop are large hail, cloud-ground lightning, severe straightline winds and potentially a small chance of tornadoes developing.

Whilst many places in southern central through to northern central England are at risk of general thunderstorms it does at the moment - and this may well change - look like areas around Cambridgshire, Bedfordshire, through to Lincolnshire and south Yorkshire may see more severe storms.

Can I suggest to you that if thunderstorms do develop bear in mind that they may become severe and keep in mind that you may need to seek shelter. Please also do, if it is absolutely safe only, grab photos of any hail stones or damage as these are invaluable to TORROs research.

Of course nothing may happen other than some rumbles of thunder. Forecasting is not an exact science and thunderstorms are especially complex to forecast, however it is worth knowing about the potential for development.

'Tis a bigun - the cat is going crazy!

TheGinSoakedBoy · 06/06/2014 21:39

I love a good storm. Not overly keen on thunder though.
It's breezy and a little chilly here ( South Yorkshire ). I wonder what tomorrow will bring?.
Thank you for this thread Smile

You are very welcome :)

It's warm down in the south, humid too. Nice to have a taste of summer.

I'm looking forward to the stormy stuff, but only because I shall be safely indoors. (DH does the brave thing of driving up to the high point to hunt the daily pinta and other comestibles.)

But I am confused about what season we're supposed to be in. Back in the day, in ye olden tymes when I were a young lass, we only got storms in late August or somesuch. I keep having to look at the date in the corner of my laptop screen to remind me that we're still in June.

Anyway, good luck to storm enthusiasts, and commiserations to anyone whose plans get rained on.

Marking place. I'm in Lincolnshire, if we have a storm I'll be under the stairs cupboard Blush

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 22:02

TORRO have issued a convective discussion.

I'm in Lincolnshire too Grin
Marking place so I can see your update tomorrow, OYBBK, thank you Smile Thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 22:38

:) you are welcome.

Pub run GFS is out, no change in thoughts other than the NW can expect some torrential rain later in the day.

If we get a storm in Oxfordshire it'll probably be overnight. Have left curtains open a crack so I can hopefully see any lightening...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 23:47

I'm hoping any storms round here wait until morning. I kind of need my beauty sleep this week.

Nothing here (Leicester) in the way of storms yet. Not especially warm at the moment (16.6C) and quite breezy but the humidity's gone up from 60% last night, to 82% at the moment. I think what we do have (and it's hard to make out above traffic noise/sound of aircraft) is a low, continuous rumble (bit like a growling dog), which probably shows the thundery stuff isn't far away.

Some useful links here and here showing lightning strikes.

Meglet · 07/06/2014 07:54

I think there's some distant thunder in North Hampshire.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 08:04

morning all. I see on the radar a lovely storm over Wales. Fascinating. Will have a look and see whats going on and back soon as I can.

Very warm and cloudy in Manchester but no rain....Yet Wink

Mckayz · 07/06/2014 08:09

Kitten, do you know if we will miss out in North Yorkshire? It is absolutely beautiful here now. I need to go out and I'm not sure if I should just go now and get it over with if storms are coming later.

Thanks.

MoominAndMiniMoom · 07/06/2014 08:16

Thunder, lightning and heavy rain here in Wrexham, NE Wales. Managed to capture some of it on my camera :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 08:17

ok, so storms have developed along the cold front as expected. the cold front is tilted NW-SE hence heavy rain and storms stretching from around Sussex through Wales in a line. Interesting that GFS picked up on the heavy western rain mid yesterday and turned out to be correct.

Met Office updated their warnings around 3am and its interesting to note they still feel that torrential rain could occur anywhere due to the widespread scatter of the storms.

Behind the line of storms there are new storms developing, so whilst it may brighten up behind the cold front there may be further storms.

Locally in central southern England I've heard some distant thunder. Clouds are mid-high level but look 'disturbed' It's dry as a bone.

Mckayz - I'd go now :) you have a nice slot ahead hopefully but later I think you may well see some of this.

First thunderclap in Lincolnshire!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 08:18

Well done Moomin!

Thanks kitten.

A casual observation is that I find it fascinating how often storm lines seem to split around the IOW leaving CS England bereft of storms. It doesnt always occur, but enough to note that the topology does seem to have an influence.

What's it looking like for East Kent ? Ds is terrified of thunder but wants to go out on a bike ride this morning. It's very warm and calm at the moment.

SpottieDottie · 07/06/2014 08:26

Thanks OYBBK, we were woken up with thunder and lightening about 6am, it's stopped now but all feels quite humid. We were heading over to Kenilworth to go camping but have changed our plans now.

misstiredbuthappy · 07/06/2014 08:26

We had thunder in North wales from 8 this morning, its dying of now though. Absolutely hammering with rain aswell.
