Potential for severe storms tomorrow.

Apologies for a bit of a replica thread but I wanted to highlight the issue clearly.

Many people will have seen the lurid headlines in the express. They are wildly over egging the situation but nevertheless there is a possibility that some severe storms will initiate tomorrow.

Main risks if such storms do develop are large hail, cloud-ground lightning, severe straightline winds and potentially a small chance of tornadoes developing.

Whilst many places in southern central through to northern central England are at risk of general thunderstorms it does at the moment - and this may well change - look like areas around Cambridgshire, Bedfordshire, through to Lincolnshire and south Yorkshire may see more severe storms.

Can I suggest to you that if thunderstorms do develop bear in mind that they may become severe and keep in mind that you may need to seek shelter. Please also do, if it is absolutely safe only, grab photos of any hail stones or damage as these are invaluable to TORROs research.

Of course nothing may happen other than some rumbles of thunder. Forecasting is not an exact science and thunderstorms are especially complex to forecast, however it is worth knowing about the potential for development.

I am in Lincolnshire so will let You know tomorrow if we get anything substantial. We had a couple of Tornados in lincs at the start of the week :)

Whereisegg · 06/06/2014 14:11

I'm in lincs too and very excited!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 15:22

Cats they werent quite tornadoes - they were funnel clouds which are before tornadoes touch the ground but nevertheless they are pretty cool (just fortunately without the destruction!)

We were planning a visit to fountains abbey tomorrow-time for a rethink.

Hakluyt · 06/06/2014 17:23

I love Fountain's Abbey!

TallGiraffe · 06/06/2014 17:29

Kitten - an outside wedding near Buxton tomorrow, what are your predictions?

morethanpotatoprints · 06/06/2014 17:33

I like storms too and can remember many during the school hols when little.
I think we are more bothered about weather now, nobody used to be fussed. If it rained or thunder you went indoors if it was fine you went out.

SpottieDottie · 06/06/2014 17:33

Hohum, perhaps we won't go camping tomorrow after all!

misstiredbuthappy · 06/06/2014 17:37

I hope we get a thunderstorm here in Wales :)

BlackeyedSusan · 06/06/2014 17:47

taking the hire car back tomorrow. i am hoping not to be having to transfer car seats in the rain and hail. Hmm I am hoping ex is coming tonight so I can use his car to get home from the hire car company. otherwise we will get very wet.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 17:53

I dont remember being closer to indoors in the olden days morethan, we werent so aware of what was happening but that meant that I got monumentally soaked sometimes and also got caught out in weather that was rather dodgy.

I think Tall you could catch a storm but I just dont know with any certainty. reminder of met office warning page

Spottie - tomorrow mid evening if you are in the midlands or further south then I'm hopeful the storms will be over depending on your exact location. - the further south the better! There may be some post frontal storms esp to the west that will need watching.

This all of course could turn out to be an unremarkable event. It is a complex and unusual synoptic situation.

I'm flying from Stansted tomorrow lunch time

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 19:02

Thanksamillion you'll be ok, they won't take off if there is a direct risk :)

My thoughts this evening remain the same. Generalised thunderstorms possible perhaps anywhere but with an enhanced risk of severe storms in the Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Lincolnshire regions.

According to the star (raised eyebrows) Hampshire/Berkshire will have massive life threatening hail stones. ..... Our something like that

morethanpotatoprints · 06/06/2014 20:00

Kitten

We used to be in the woods/forest miles away from home on long bike rides. We weren't always close to home, it was fun getting soaked on a hot day, you soon dried off or went home to change.
I think people think they might melt with a few rain drops these days.
Maybe its because fewer dc play outside or walk to school in all weathers.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 21:01

I only warn for rain if flash or other flooding is expected. As it is in places tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 06/06/2014 21:02

I'm interested in what the humidity/temperatures do overnight ~ at the moment it isn't that humid here (Leicester) and there's a nice breeze. The forecasts I've seen say that the humidity should rise during the night, leading to the right conditions for heavy rain/possible thunderstorms tomorrow. It could be an interesting 24 hours as to where thunderstorms occur.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 06/06/2014 21:05

I'm in Wiltshire. How worried should I be?

MaureenMLove · 06/06/2014 21:05

Is it wrong that I'm thrilled that there is potential that the opening of the new church extention is going to be cut short, because people won't hang around for the hog roast that's planned?

I really could do with not being stuck there between 10am and 4pm!

God strike me down! Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 21:10

Not worried Fence, just aware.

I don't want anyone to be worried about this, it's not stormaggedon just potential for some rather lively storms in places.

GloriaSmud · 06/06/2014 21:17

Maureen Grin If it's cut short due to the weather, I'd grab the hog roast then not only have you got an early finish, you're sorted for dinner tomorrow (and probably for several days after as well!)

MaureenMLove · 06/06/2014 21:26

I'm just thankful, that my activity is inside! I shall take coffee and cake with me and baton down the hatches if necessary! Grin

napoleonsnose · 06/06/2014 21:32

Thunder and lightning here now in Cornwall. I do love a good storm. No rain though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2014 21:36

You have the advance guard napoleon!
