Potential for severe storms tomorrow.

Apologies for a bit of a replica thread but I wanted to highlight the issue clearly.

Many people will have seen the lurid headlines in the express. They are wildly over egging the situation but nevertheless there is a possibility that some severe storms will initiate tomorrow.

Main risks if such storms do develop are large hail, cloud-ground lightning, severe straightline winds and potentially a small chance of tornadoes developing.

Whilst many places in southern central through to northern central England are at risk of general thunderstorms it does at the moment - and this may well change - look like areas around Cambridgshire, Bedfordshire, through to Lincolnshire and south Yorkshire may see more severe storms.

Can I suggest to you that if thunderstorms do develop bear in mind that they may become severe and keep in mind that you may need to seek shelter. Please also do, if it is absolutely safe only, grab photos of any hail stones or damage as these are invaluable to TORROs research.

Of course nothing may happen other than some rumbles of thunder. Forecasting is not an exact science and thunderstorms are especially complex to forecast, however it is worth knowing about the potential for development.

Kitten - re the topology effect of the IoW. DH and I have often wondered why the weather mostly seems to go either side of us (we're in Hampshire, almost due north of Cowes). But I wonder if any splitting effect starts off as systems from the south move over the Cherbourg peninsula and then get reinforced by the IoW.

It's an interesting reminder that weather isn't something that only happens up there (until, of course, it ends up down here ), but that there's a continuum from the surface, land and sea, to the thingy-sphere, and each level can affect the others.

France (Paris and to the north east) look to be getting some good lightning right now

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/06/2014 11:58

Mckayz · 09/06/2014 12:02

No thunder or rain here in North Yorks. We always seem to miss out on thunder.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/06/2014 12:03

There is actually a rather nasty storm showing up there now. Potential for damage from hail and perhaps wind. would really appreciate any reports.

So muggy and humid in N essex. Not a breath of wind, very still, quite eerie

misstiredbuthappy · 09/06/2014 12:05

Its been raining all morning in North Wales and im sure ive hear a few rumbles of thunder.

AugustaProdworthy · 09/06/2014 12:09

Nothing in cambridgeshire yet ( or at least where I am) sunny, still and warm.
We had loud but short thunder storm around 6 am Saturday but nothing like what was forecast in some reports.
Hoping for a downpour later as I've for some tidying up to do.

SpottieDottie · 09/06/2014 12:36

Rain and thunder until about 9.30am in middle England, I packed the DCs off with coats and brollies but by 10am it was gorgeous sunshine - just got in from shopping and the laundry on the line is all dry!

GloriaSmud · 09/06/2014 12:42

'Orribly humid and muggy here (Leicester) Wouldn't be surprised if we get a few rumbles of thunder/a thunderstorm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/06/2014 12:54

Well worth looking at TORRO's facebook page. Interesting analysis of the current storms.

Mckayz · 09/06/2014 12:58

There is lightning near York according to this so maybe it is heading this way. It's started to cloud over.

It is so muggy though so a bit of a storm would be nice.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/06/2014 13:02

do you fb? there is a snap shot of where the potential supercells are developing.

In the mean time: France

OP posts:
Mckayz · 09/06/2014 13:05

Yeah, we aren't on the map they have posted but it looks like it is coming this way.

Wow, I am pleased I am not in France!!

How early do you have an idea of what the weather will be like? The boys both have school trips to the beach next week and I'm hoping it will be dry!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/06/2014 13:07

It does look like high pressure might be trying to set up next week. Give me a prod thursday or so :)

Mckayz · 09/06/2014 13:22

Thanks OYBBK. Smile

I am really interested by tornadoes, hurricanes etc. I wonder how often there are T8 and above tornadoes?

Off to google.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/06/2014 13:26

few figures on british tornadoes :)

Mckayz · 09/06/2014 13:32

Thanks.

Mckayz · 09/06/2014 14:31

The rain is here now. Just in time for the school run.

CatsCantTwerk · 09/06/2014 14:49

Had a great storm in Lincoln yesterday afternoon. It has been clear skies all day here but it has just turned awfully dark.

Someone on the Facebook page UK Weather Discussions has just posted an amazing pic of 4 inches of hailstone in the Notts area. Shock
