Potential for severe storms tomorrow.

Apologies for a bit of a replica thread but I wanted to highlight the issue clearly.

Many people will have seen the lurid headlines in the express. They are wildly over egging the situation but nevertheless there is a possibility that some severe storms will initiate tomorrow.

Main risks if such storms do develop are large hail, cloud-ground lightning, severe straightline winds and potentially a small chance of tornadoes developing.

Whilst many places in southern central through to northern central England are at risk of general thunderstorms it does at the moment - and this may well change - look like areas around Cambridgshire, Bedfordshire, through to Lincolnshire and south Yorkshire may see more severe storms.

Can I suggest to you that if thunderstorms do develop bear in mind that they may become severe and keep in mind that you may need to seek shelter. Please also do, if it is absolutely safe only, grab photos of any hail stones or damage as these are invaluable to TORROs research.

Of course nothing may happen other than some rumbles of thunder. Forecasting is not an exact science and thunderstorms are especially complex to forecast, however it is worth knowing about the potential for development.

Warm grey and calm here not few from Sittingbourne. Dithering about whether to wake dd and send her to get the horses in........

Waxlyrically · 07/06/2014 08:32

Just had a 10 minute storm with torrential rain, thunder And hail here in NW Leics. Sun is trying to come out now - hope that's it for us we have to go to a BBQ event later and Dd is at a music festival - all outdoors.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 08:32

East kent looks like it might catch some in a bit if the storm doesnt die out.

Fraid my time is getting limited. If you are in central southern england though look out at the clouds you may see something interesting. :)

Dry here in W Yorkshire. From tv forecasts it is going to be wet. But not particularly stormy.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/06/2014 08:34

oh my gosh. it has gone right past without touching us. on thelightening detector it has many strikes an hour ago off to one side of us.

seems like that was true for you too Gloria.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/06/2014 08:36

spottie dottie, looking at the map it missed Kenilworth entirely.

misstiredbuthappy · 07/06/2014 08:38

Its just statred thundering again here. The grids are spilling over in the street.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 08:38

Arent storms frustrasting! Someone 5 miles up the road can be having a cracking good storm while you sit in the dry.

I got woken by three or four really impressive long rolling bits of thunder 6amish I guess didn't bother putting my glasses on to read the clock.

South West Midlands.

MoominAndMiniMoom · 07/06/2014 08:44

All seems to have gone quiet here :)

Meglet · 07/06/2014 08:45

Basingstoke - We had a 10 min storm, probably 5 mins of torrential rain.....and it's gone.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/06/2014 08:46

well I am quite chuffed at not being woken at 7 am by screaming children. a storm laterwhen I get a good view though and am safely back home would notbe so bad.

there was once the most spectacular storm, cloud to earth lightening strikes. I say earth as some of them seemed to be hitting the tower block a couple of streets away. (it was not pleasant being in a top floor flat then. but amazingly spectacular. ) I saw some men in high viz jackets on top of the same block a few weeks ago. wandering round in the middle of a thunder storm. from here I can only see the top couple of feet of the block as it is hidden by the closer lower blocks but bright high viz jackets catch your eye.

Spottybra · 07/06/2014 08:47

It's been nice and sunny since 5am and black clouds have only started to roll in over the last few minutes.

Kids am cinema is our plan I think.

IrianofWay · 07/06/2014 08:47

Somerset. It's raining. Plus ca change Hmm. But.... About 3.30 am we had some quite impressive flashes and bangs and torrential rain that sounded like a power hose hitting the roof. Lasted about 15 mins until it faded enough not to be heard over dh's snores....

ChubbyKitty · 07/06/2014 08:51

I was woken up around 8 by my alarm but then by a sudden downpour and some thunder. All is calm now in NewarkConfused didn't get woken up by anything during the night but window was shut.

JillJ72 · 07/06/2014 08:59

N Bucks and it is now raining. Breeze gently picking up. Warm in the house.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 08:59

A good line of storms coming up from the channel - will they make it across intact???

looking at the map again. it would havbe been about five miles down the road...

gallicgirl · 07/06/2014 09:05

A friend in Exeter was woken at 4am by huge thunderstorm.

All quiet and sunny in Essex though.

Methe · 07/06/2014 09:15

Black Country - an hour long storm between 7 and 8. Almost one continual role of thunder with loads of lightening. It went out with a huge huge crack which I was concerned was lightening hitting the big top in the field over the road.... But I don't think it was.

I'm supposed to be building a greenhouse today hope the predicted hale doesn't materialise!

pigsinmud · 07/06/2014 09:15

Nothing in my bit of Surrey apart from a little rain overnight.

ChubbyKitty · 07/06/2014 09:21

Well I've very quickly got a lake at the end of the driveway.

And next doors gutter is leaking into my driveway. Starting to think I should have gone for a smoke while it was calmHmm

Mckayz · 07/06/2014 09:41

I just got back from my quick trip to the shop. It's starting to get grey now.

OhBabyLilyMunster · 07/06/2014 10:09

Bad rain in south cumbria now. Started like a tap switching on!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2014 10:15

Well done Mckayz. We have the heavy rain now but its been disappointing storm wise, just a little t&l.

It is still this afternoon that holds out most interest for those in eastern counties as highlighted before. Its always tricky to forecast post frontal storms but it is still possible that there will be some supercell development.
