Can anyone tell me why the met office has gusts of 60-70 for London overnight and tomorrow but xcweather has 40-50?! Who do I believe out of interest

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2014 21:59

I would go with the met office, they use more than one computer model.

East Devon is being battered tonight again... this is not nice Sad

alcibiades · 04/02/2014 22:16

We're very, very lucky in that we're in a pretty sheltered position - half-way up a hill and surrounded by other houses - but, even so, it's getting very noisy out there. The back door to the garage got blown open. We can't fully close it, because it's got swollen from all the rain (237 mm so far this year). So I've pushed it as firmly shut as I can, but we'll check the garage in the morning in case any of our neighbourhood cats crept in to shelter from the weather.

So, we're not experiencing too much of a problem so far. There is a warning out for the river at the bottom end of town, so there are houses there that could get flooded. And no doubt there'll be more trees getting blown down.

I guess I'm like everyone else in hoping that the weather soon gets back to being interesting/fascinating, rather than what it is at the moment where people are having their homes and livelihoods damaged.

Met office have just issued amber wind warning for south east. Oh crumbs!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2014 22:35

Oh dear :( not quite sure why though if the SW haven't had one tonight,

Hester - I hope you and the business premises are ok x

(SE) No idea what the winds are here, but strong. It's also still pelting down, so waiting for the phone call - can't settle.

denialandpanic · 04/02/2014 22:48

Just came on to discuss tomorrow's Amber. I suspect they missed tonight in south west, they seem too slow to issue Amber warning at times? I guess it's a bit damned if they do and damned if they don't.There's also a level of weather fatigue I think.I mentioned to my boss today that I wanted to work from home tomorrow in case dc school shuts (we loose power easy and often school is on same circuit) and he just looked at me blankly, wasn't aware of warnings at all.

puffinnuffin · 04/02/2014 22:50

SE here very windy and rainy. I felt really sorry for the poor reporter getting blown about and struggling to speak on the local news.

SpottyTeacakes · 05/02/2014 05:40

South west have amber too now.

I know this sounds ridiculous but last time it was windy dp nearly go crushed by a tree driving home. I'm not really happy about driving dd to nursery today when the roads are lined with trees!

digerd · 05/02/2014 07:10

SE.
S.Herts here and yesterday was sunny most of the day but the wind was noticeably colder. Heard it pouring with rain a few hours ago.
6.7 degrees atm

Helenagrace · 05/02/2014 07:28

It's been a wild night here in Sussex. Hester I hope you and your business are ok.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 07:39

spotty- thats not silly at all.

amber warnings in force across much of the south. In the SW its til 19:00 in the south and SE it is til 15:00

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 07:42

chipping and everyone I hope it wasnt too bad last night.

This lull that some of us have wont last I'm afraid but the rain will turn more squally with thunder and hail possible.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/02/2014 07:50

power has been off overnight and is still off in some parts of the south west. they are reporting collapses in sea walls.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 08:44

Looking ahead - no change.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 08:45

thats not good blackeyed. Hope they are ok with the next tide. Dawlish looks a mess :(

The IOM has taken another pounding from the wind, although thankfully no serious tidal flooding last night. We are used to bad weather here but the damage the island has sustained in the last few weeks is getting ridiculous. The authorities are now filling in holes in roads, sea walls & various proms with rubble just to try & do some repairs before the next lot of damage happens :(

Mid Somerset here - wild, wild wind and rain. It made a very interesting dog walk earlier and it seems to be getting worse.

We are nowhere near the horrendous levels flooding, I can't begin to imagine just how they feel faced with yet more of this downpour.

www.gowerlive.co.uk/webcams/caswell-webcam

A few days ago at Caswell Beach - that cafe got smashed apart.

threebats · 05/02/2014 09:23

Should say that normally, there are about 20 odd steps to get down to the beach from that cafe, its along way down - so that tide was mahoosive!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 09:36

what a picture!!

Rather wild here, but nothing severe yet.

Worcestershire. Raining and occasional really strong gusts of wind. Horrible. But not as horrible as elsewhere.

threebats · 05/02/2014 09:46

Know I am jumping your thread so will be brief then go back to stalking you all quietly - its been windy here in Swansea and its rained but its nothing we don't normally get I suppose. We are kind of used to high tides and wind and so on - it has been worse than usual this winter in respect of it being one after another after another but we seem to have managed to remain a cocoon here and take a hit, yes, but nothing compared to those up North Wales and also SW England, considering we can see Cornwall on a clear day from certain beaches here, we have been incredibly lucky. The cafe is about the only thing I know that has suffered a direct hit and been damaged. Unless I hear more as today goes on.
Take care all.
