Shock Power flicking heavy rain strong winds. Dp phoned to say a tree nearly fell on him and now he's stuck five minutes from home in between two trees on the narrowest steepest hill around Sad sorry for lack of punctuation

LIZS · 25/01/2014 16:55

wow, sudden high wind and hail in space of 10 mins. dh had just left to pick up dd

BehindLockNumberNine · 25/01/2014 16:57

Schilke, I am in Surrey too! It was sudden, wasn't it??

digerd · 25/01/2014 17:00

S.Herts here and it was a 5 minute wonder thunder storm with gale force winds. Never known anything like it, but pleased it was over so quickly.

LIZS · 25/01/2014 17:01

Calmer but eerie sky . Thick black cloud above with brighter area highlighting silhouette of the North Downs in the distance.

SpottyTeacakes · 25/01/2014 17:01

Dp got a lift home with a policeman who said 8 trees down in five minutes. So weird that there was a policeman there as we really do live in the middle of nowhere!

mankyscotslass · 25/01/2014 17:01

Still very windy but nothing as dramatic as the squall line earlier. DB is driving up the M6 on the way to Scotland from Germany. It has been an interesting drive!

toomanyeasterbunnies · 25/01/2014 17:04

Not surpsised if there are a few more trees down. The wind really pjcked up for 10 mins. It came from nowhere. All calm now though.

LIZS · 25/01/2014 17:08

and now the birds are chirping!

SpottyTeacakes · 25/01/2014 17:38

A tree has fallen on someone's house Sad

LadyCelia · 25/01/2014 17:55

Another Surrey resident here, I'm just clearing up the dining room as the flat roof above has just developed a huge crack in that storm which let all the rain through Sad It was quite scary, watching the huge squalls go past the window. According to Surrey Roads Police on their twitter feed, there are a lot of trees down blocking the roads round here too.

puffinnuffin · 25/01/2014 18:38

Very freaky weather here (SE)- wind was horrific- like in a film, hail, lightening then suddenly calm,

Helenagrace · 25/01/2014 19:28

Gosh some scary storm posts on here. It's windy here atm but no freaky weather.

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2014 19:39

Thunderstorm hit here (Leicester) as well. There was some amazing thunder ~ almost continuous rumbling going on at one point and the temperature dropped quickly from 8 or 9C down to 3.3C. I took a picture (taken towards the end of the storm) of all the hail that had collected on my car.

LIZS · 25/01/2014 19:47

dh had to dodge a fallen tree across the main road. Quite a few blue lights passed our house .

SpottyTeacakes · 25/01/2014 20:39

Everyone round here is shouting mini tornado. I'm a bit Hmm about it tbh. There are trees down everywhere, miles apart. It doesn't seem likely awaits correction from those in the know

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2014 21:01

Met-monkey have got a bit here about the weather this afternoon and the Express have described it as the APOCALYPSE.

Cindy34 · 25/01/2014 21:18

Lots of trees down across Surrey. Glad I stayed indoors this evening. Seems dangerous to drive tonight, hope anyone driving around stays safe.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2014 21:39

I've had a few people contact me about whether it was a mini tornado. It wouldn't have been everywhere :) (but there isn't such a thing as a mini tornado, they are weak or strong!)

It is possible that there were some tornadic spin ups from the squall line and torro I'm sure will be looking at reports of clusters of damage but the majority of damage will be from straight line winds.

We saw a tree down tonight. We also saw one that had come down without any wind this morning! The ground is so saturated that trees are coming down much more easily than usual.

If you do have a cluster of damage in your area please can you report it to torro. Of special interest will be damage to buildings - at the moment that will give a more accurate indication of strength of wind. Thanks :)

warnings for everything but fog

Main risks are flooding in the south, especially the SW and gales (severe on western and perhaps southern headlands as well as the areas highlighted by the met office). I'd expect more trees down.

Ok, currently looking for damage/weather reports from Nuneaton and Retford please.

Had to drive through an extreme storm on the way home from Milton Keynes Ikea this afternoon! Hail, horizontal rain, purple fork lightning, the lot.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2014 22:20

That will be part of the squall line Meg.

Kicking myself that I missed forecasting this! I spent my limited forecasting time looking at tomorrow and the end of the weeks snow potential.

Still, it was a nice surprise, probably not for many though!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2014 22:22

Feel slightly better that estofex completely missed it though!
