my car was covered in smallish bits of dark brown soily stuff. thought it was off the roof at first but h's car was on the road and suffered the same. up to 4 mm in diameter prob.

we had a terrific long thunderstorm with lightning across the sky and many many lightening flashes.

GloriaSmud · 26/01/2014 07:44

Blackeyed ~ I think everything got so whipped up yesterday it wouldn't surprise me if soil got mixed in with it all too.

Not raining here (Leicester) yet but it's dull and overcast so don't think today's rain is far away. I see that it's snowing at Braemar already ~ don't think it'll be long before those snowgates are closed!

SpottyTeacakes · 26/01/2014 08:15

Oybbk seriously, was it a mini tornado? I'm very Hmm about it but don't want to be telling ever ink they're wrong if, in fact, they're right Blush

digerd · 26/01/2014 08:41

SE.
Just looked at trees and arches front and back of garden and all still standing. Will see if any of the trees along the dog walks and fields are down . It did last for only a few minutes though - most strange it was.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2014 09:31

Spotty, weak tornadoes tend to be a few metres wide, maybe up to about 40 for a more moderate tornado. They create a distinctive pattern of damage with trees thrown 90 degrees or so to the path of the tornado. The damage forms a straight line, not always continuous. Buildings will also be damaged. If you have a large swathe where trees have fallen in the direction of the wind then it is going to be straight line winds, which can be severe and remarkable. (There have been some famous examples in the states)

It does seem fairly likely that last night there were some weak to moderate tornadoes (never describe them as mini, no such thing!). However the vast majority of damage will be straight line winds as the squall line passed through. There are huge areas reporting significant tree loss from this very interesting event.

Once I'm out of bed I will log onto torro and look at where they are seeking information. In the mean time don't forget today's weather! Rain has started here earlier than the Met office forecast. Flooding will be an issue, especially in the SW. more trees will come down, for most the winds won't be as strong as yesterday's squall, but as I said before, the ground is saturated, trees have been weakened and they seem to be plopping down round here with very little excuse.

Gusty with light rain in Leicestershire. We got hit by that storm yesterday afternoon,we were about to ride, but dpony was being so spooky that DD2 didn't want to ride her.It was really out of character,so I said to just groom them and we'd turn them back out,as I could hear thunder.I was stuck in the middle of the field when it hit,and the girls had to run for cover in a shed. The hail was like nothing I've ever seen and very painful,I had a full length raincoat on and was still soaked through.I suspect dpony knew something was coming as she is normally very sensible, and thank goodness she did as we'd have been a mile down the road with no cover if we'd gone ahead with our hack.

Hope we don't get snow,we start lambing in a few weeks and we don't want a repeat of last year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2014 09:38

What a fabulous pony!

Thanks oybbk. My thinking is that there are trees over EVERYWHERE facing all different directions. I have a photo of the tree that nearly got dp. Wish I could post it on here!

ShellyF · 26/01/2014 10:16

The storm yesterday carried our large trampoline across two fields.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2014 10:27

Spotty, please can you pm me with details or contact TORRO, that does sound interesting.

Places where more info would be welcome:
Nuneaton
Harlow
Retford
Midhurst area.

May have more areas to look at as reports come in.

So after todays foul wind and rain it looks like there could be a little sleet and snow this evening and more over night. anywhere over higher ground may wake up to a little in the morning. No guarantees, it is right on the edge of rain/snow.

Rest of the week - miserable, raw, wet and rain/sleet. Keeping an eye on this weekend to see what happens with another potential low pressure.

LostInWales · 26/01/2014 10:45

Wow, googling 'straight line winds' brings up some cool photo's and diagrams. They look nearly as scary as tornados if you live in a big flat place.

LostInWales · 26/01/2014 10:46

More miserable, raw, wet and rain/sleet then? Lovely.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2014 10:51

Look up derechos :) I'm not entirely sure how the definition compares to a squall line but they produce scary SLWs!

mankyscotslass · 26/01/2014 10:53

It started raining on my walk to work at 6am, and hasn't stopped since. very windy now too

LostInWales · 26/01/2014 11:50

Wow, they look cool too. I am so glad I don't live in America, their weather seems to be constantly trying to kill them.

Marne · 26/01/2014 12:43

Just watched the bbc weather and looks like almost anywhere could get snow tonight when the temperature dips, I don't think anything will settle though as it looks like it will just to turn to rain when the temperatures rise again. They said it will turn even colder at the end of the week bringing more snow showers but mainly to the east of uk.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2014 13:40

That about sums it up Lost!

Marne, that does sound a reasonable assessment, until the bit about the snow showers will be mainly in the east at the end of the week. I'm not sure we know enough yet to state that.

Just seen a video from a friend on FB and about 10 miles from here the roads are completely whited out with sleet/hail. Brrrr, thought it had got a bit chilly.

nannynick · 26/01/2014 16:48

Sleet has made it to Surrey/Berks border. Suddenly just got dark and sleet is hammering on the windows trying to get in.

LIZS · 26/01/2014 17:21

It's off again .

Marne · 26/01/2014 17:28

I hope we do get some snow (but not loads, just one snow day would be nice) Grin.

Skies are almost clear here now but it has got very cold.

digerd · 26/01/2014 18:10

SE.
Noticed it was colder indoors and skies clearing. +5 degrees atm outside and 90% humidity, so horrible damp cold. Was +2 last night.

HesterShaw · 26/01/2014 18:15

I just had a wheelie bin go cartwheeling past the front of the house. Still breezy then...
