A just for fun thread! Remember I’m not a professional and it’s important not to base decisions on what I say in forecasting threads as I may very well get it wrong. At this point in time I am looking at GFS, as other charts come into range I will start discussing those too. I’m also looking at the GFS ensembles (which at present as you would expect have a wide range of solutions, most of which are mild). The forecast will change as we go along considering how far out we are at present.

In general over the next couple of weeks we seem to be kept in mild southerlies or south-westerly’s, with more potential for storms and there isn’t much promise of a cold Christmas. The 24th December has finally made into the range of the GFS. What a chart!! It shows a deep low which would bring severe gales and a mix of heavy snow (for some) and heavy rain (for most) across the UK with the snow risk being greater the further north you are.

It’s a stonker of a chart, but probably not a welcome one!

We have to collect SDD from Heathrow late Tuesday night, she's flying in from Glasgow.

I'm a bit worried now!

SpottyChristmasCakes · 23/12/2013 12:03

Ours has dipped too and I've got dinner in the slow cooker Sad

thornrose · 23/12/2013 12:03

Oh no, I wonder if I'm going to be able to travel by train from West Sussex to London tomorrow? We're supposed to be going to Winter Wonderland and it's closed today Sad

My dd will be beside herself if we can't go!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 12:03

QEII bridge closing from noon for 16 hours

Thorn what time? I reckon early trains will be suspended

thornrose · 23/12/2013 12:06

I was hoping for about 1/2 pm.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 12:06

I'm going to post actual updates on the warnings thread and do my general chatting mostly in here as its getting a bit silly my double posting!

Though there are problems on the trains near guildford due to a fallen tree.

SpottyChristmasCakes · 23/12/2013 12:08

I think you'll be ok getting the train not sure if ww will be open but the warnings have lifted by then. Can you arrange a plan b?

thornrose · 23/12/2013 12:11

Hmm, tricky one, dd is 14 and has AS. I'm starting to prepare her for the potential disappointment.

I realise I sound incredibly selfish when people are facing flooding and power cuts Blush

SpottyChristmasCakes · 23/12/2013 12:15

I don't think you sound selfish Smile fx for you

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 12:27

thornrose, the first few trains are likely to be cancelled I'm afraid, once the high winds settle they will send out empty trains to inspect the tracks. Aim for later in the day if you can.

marking place

thornrose · 23/12/2013 12:31

Thanks, I have flexible tickets so will play it by ear. Later suits us actually.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 12:37

That sounds good thornrose :) you'll need wellies though I reckon - mud will be a bit extraordinary there.

Oh my god, I hadn't even thought of that. We have no suitable footwear.

Me and my bloody ideas, should've stuck to the usual panto.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 13:12

Not to worry. Take your least nice shoes, wear those when you are there and put them in carrier bags for the way home.

My non-ideal anemometer which under-reads by about 50% is gusting to 40mph now.

On tomorrow's journey I might just release the handbreak and rig up some kind of sail. We'll have a nice following wind down the A30 and 303 and will save a fortune in fuel. Might be rather fun!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 13:51

That's an idea!!

early warnings for friday over the entire UK.

Read a report that Fenchurch street is currently closed.

Reminder of the bbc live reports link.

A tree down on the line near chessington. I would reconsider any rail travel in the south for this afternoon/evening.

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 13:58

Well, I am off for a walk while it is still light(ish) to go and see how things are faring so far. Prob not to be recommended! Promise to avoid trees.

OP posts:
oadcb · 23/12/2013 14:14

Well you weren't wrong. Trees down and roads horrid. With worse to come!

oadcb · 23/12/2013 14:17

Oh and Ive hurt my hand shoulder and arm protecting myself as I slid on mud into open car door. Staying home now

EdithWeston · 23/12/2013 14:30

New record high wind in Conwy (87mph gusts), Torbay has gusts of 76mph, and lots of places over 60. Advice is to minimise travel in whole storm area.
