2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

I had a feeling that the cold next week might not produce much in the way of snow and that things would be downgraded ~ I don't think all the conditions are right for lots of countrywide snow yet but it'll be interesting to see which areas do get some.

The Daily Express though can always be relied on for a laugh its winter forecasting!]]

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2013 20:16

That is one tragic article!

digerd · 16/11/2013 21:26

SE
It has stayed at 7 degrees all evening so hope for a mildish night and sun tomorrowHmm

Doingfine · 17/11/2013 08:54

Beautiful morning in Scotland. Grin

FunnyRunner · 17/11/2013 10:53

Dull and mild here.

That Express article was a hoot. I can just see the guys at the Met Office reading their own quotes and then scratching their heads, thinking 'How did they forecast Snowmageddon from that?' Confused :o

leesmum · 17/11/2013 17:15

Kitten are you doing a Snow Watch thread for this week?

digerd · 17/11/2013 17:39

stayed overcast and got to 10 degrees today, but was dismal. SE.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 17/11/2013 18:11

This is the snow watch thread leesmum :) I've been out all day (and am shattered and hungry) hence the no updates today.

leesmum · 17/11/2013 18:17

Good, I know where I am then, get your feet up....you could be in for a busy week Smile

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 17/11/2013 18:25

Ok,
Quick look before I get stuff ready for dinner:

Tuesday night into Wednesday - marginal. I think there's going to be a fair bit of disappointment with cold rain.
Places that at the moment I think will see snow:Scottish hills, Pennines.
Places that have a fairly reasonable chance for some wet snow: lowland Scotland, NW England.
Other places - not so much.

One caveat is that if the rain is heavy enough then it may turn to snow in other places for a time, before turning back to rain.

Sorry guys. However, it's only November :)

Reastie · 17/11/2013 18:41

marking place

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/11/2013 22:02

There's still plenty of winter left yet!!

johnworf · 17/11/2013 23:59

We're up in the north west (manchester), and all forecasts I've seen show drop in temp but rain, no snow.

NoComet · 18/11/2013 01:54

Don't say sorry, DSIS is visiting and has to be back Wed.

Her route crosses the hills on the Welsh border, snow staying North is just what she wants to hear.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 18/11/2013 02:49

Greetings from Northern Canada. The snow arrived one month later than last year, so that's a bonus. We've had about four inches so far. The temperatures have plummeted. It was -15 during the day today.

Sorel boots are very popular here with all ages, as are Bogs.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 18/11/2013 08:02

johnworf, i think the pennines will get some but not lower places like Manchester or probably Sheffield.

Forecast as last night really. North Wales might see some tomorrow, especially over the hills of course. Other than that, I think Scottish hills and the pennines will see some - elsewhere perhaps some wet transitory snow leading to a temporary covering in some parts of the NW and scotland, other than that just rain.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 18/11/2013 08:03

Hi Moose :)

Interesting your snow arrived so late.

WhispersOfWickedness · 18/11/2013 10:42

Really interesting to hear from other places, I have friends in Norway (Oslo) and they have no snow yet which is quite late for them Smile

digerd · 18/11/2013 10:47

Even milder night last night at 8.4. Atm 9.9 and 90% relative humidity. Must have rained in the night as grass soaking and little dog was very wet and bedraggled.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 18/11/2013 13:16

ice could be quite an issue tonight into tomorrow for those in Scotland and the NW england.warnings

Also a gales warning for the western side of Scotland and northern Ireland.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 18/11/2013 13:17

gales are for wednesday.

FunnyRunner · 18/11/2013 14:20

Thanks for keeping us updated OYBBK :)

FunnyRunner · 18/11/2013 19:58

Hailing here. Really bizarre how quickly weather turned here it was very mild earlier but now there is a strong, cold wind.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 18/11/2013 21:54

We will all be feeling much colder tomorrow.

Any update from Scotland?

InkleWinkle · 18/11/2013 22:01

There have been small snow showers in some areas of West Lothian (central)
