2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

lolol!!! if only that were true - I could then start charging!

PoopMaster · 14/11/2013 15:51

Just seen that Express article on Facebook shared by several friends and thought...I wonder what OYBBK has to say about all this? Grin

It's a public service you provide - too right you should start charging!

I knew DH should've insured those train tickets to London for beginning December

digerd · 14/11/2013 19:18

Wind has changed its direction and is much colder today. . NW?

duckyfuzz · 14/11/2013 19:22

winter tyre swap booked in for Saturday Grin

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/11/2013 22:30

Ooh - just in time duckyfuzz !

Meglet · 14/11/2013 23:18

I nearly had a heart attack when I left the office today, it was bloody freezing. And I left my hat at home.

Cold is better than wet though, my laundry is much happier outside on the line.

GloriaSmud · 15/11/2013 06:46

-1.4C here at the moment (Leicester) Brrrrrr!

mankyscotslass · 15/11/2013 08:07

Cold and damp here today.

Grey and depressing really, I prefer crisp and cold!

The cat is blaming me for the damp and cold - he wants to go out but not when it is like this. Plaintive yowls are echoing round the house, and I am trying to ignore him.

He will be even more unhappy when the heating goes off in half an hour!

itscockyfoxagain · 15/11/2013 08:09

Fingers crossed for no snow in the Midlands at least not until after DDs birthday party a week om Sunday.

Hassled · 15/11/2013 08:19

Can I throw MIL's non-patented weather forecasting technique into the ring?
It snowed in New York this week. That means (MIL says this is never wrong Hmm) that it will snow here in 3 weeks time, so week commencing 2nd December.

digerd · 15/11/2013 08:34

S.Herts
2.8 degrees lowest last night and now brilliant blue sky - no frost this morning.Smile
But my sitting room took 3 hours to get from 17 to 21 todayAngry.
Still not really warm and hands a bit cold Confused.
Heat may or may not go off at 9am as is programmed down to 20< has been back on in 30 minutes recently as already lost 1 degree. grrr

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/11/2013 08:50

Hassled, I know others who think like that Grin wouldn't it be irritating if she was right!

I'm a bit discouraged by the met office charts which seem to give dry and a flake of snow in Scotland. It doesn't seem to tally with the models, which though aren't as exciting as last nights still seem to give potential snow for many (and disappointing rain for many others, but remember it is still November)

Tuesday Wednesday still seem to be the prime days, with snow potential (I think) for southern Wales, welsh borders and perhaps the Bristol Channel and also much of Scotland and some of eastern England, especially the NE. At the moment there isn't really any indication for snow in the SE. potential is the key word here rather than certainty!!!!! Will keep updating as the models update.
We aren't looking at snowmagedon or enough for disruption (except in that even a few flakes of snow seem to cause traffic issues sometimes) but it might be pretty for some :)

NoComet · 15/11/2013 09:04

Welsh borders is not what I want to hear.
DSIS wants to be crossing the high central bit at just the wrong time.

Perihelion · 15/11/2013 09:27

Am allowing myself to get, just a wee bit excited Grin and at the same time wondering why I chose to live so near the coast and so close to sea level, when I love snow.....

GloriaSmud · 15/11/2013 09:58

The models last night did look quite good for snow. I have noticed that after the short cold snap next week, the temperatures don't really increase that much so it's still going to be chilly afterwards (although this is also 10 days-fortnight into the future, so will probably change.) The temps don't look like bouncing back up to the 10C/11C that we've been used to recently.

digerd · 15/11/2013 11:50

Beautiful day in S.Herts, but that northerly wind is icy. Little furry dog loved it in the open fields and I sensibly wore my lightest eskimo outfit with hood up.Smile

BadgersRetreat · 15/11/2013 17:24

Just to make you all jealous well, some more than others not only are we forecast 15 cm of snow tonigth and tomorrow... but they have forecast BLIZZARDS!

not in the UK...before OYBBK tears up her met charts.... Grin

EndoplasmicReticulum · 15/11/2013 19:51

Marking place on correct snow thread this time!

WhispersOfWickedness · 15/11/2013 20:52

Marking place Grin Thank you OYBBK SmileThanks

digerd · 16/11/2013 06:58

-1 degrees last night and still is. Sky clear and grass frosty.
When my roof is covered in a thick layer of snow it is always warmer indoors I have noticed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2013 07:34

V. Quick update as off out. Met office are going for snow in Scotland Tuesday and Wednesday, light snow primarily down the east side England to around the Wash.

GFS has gone completely marginal with no snow really possible. It always seems to do this, backs off close to the event.

More later.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2013 10:27

I think things are looking more marginal at the moment. On the face of it if you look at the temperature and the precipitation then it looks like the north could see some snow, perhaps other parts too.

However you need the temperature all the way through the cloud to the surface to be around zero or below. If you look at where the 528 thickness line lies on the 500hpa charts, that can be a good indication that the air aloft is cold enough. Unfortunately that line has shifted north for tuesday thursday.

Another goodish indication is to look at the temperature at 850hpa. You are looking for a temp of around -5C usually. Northern areas scrape into that next week with a -6c

The above things to look for are only a small part of snow forecasting - heavy rain falling into dry air can lower the air temperature to the point where snow can form. The bbc has a

good explanation of some of the difficulties of forecasting snow.

So to summarise - marginal, but more likely for the north than else where at present. The east not so much, especially earlier on through tuesday into wednesday. I still think there is a risk of snow for those around south Wales and the Bristol channel. Perhaps on the SW Moors too. The NW seems more at risk today than it did yesterday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2013 10:28

Badgers, not sure whether to be Envy or not! I prefer my snow to be where it belongs in the Dec-Feb time period! Bit too busy for it at the moment Grin

digerd · 16/11/2013 15:49

Weather has changed yet again. This morning beautiful and NO cold wind. Smile Now overcast and feels milder 8 degrees. But air quality is bad.

RegainingUnconsciousness · 16/11/2013 16:19

" Perhaps on the SW Moors too"
Woop! Although it's chilly indoors this arvo
