2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

The air does not feel as mild as yesterday did despite the same air tempertature and no wind. Why is that? 12 degrees atm, no sun. Was it the drizzly clouds that made it feel milder? Lighter skies today. Did have a short while of sun shining much earlier.

FunnyRunner · 07/11/2013 13:32

Bitterly cold here today with another really biting wind. Had to put the heating on. Heading into town shortly to run some messages, including stopping off to buy some thermals!!!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 07/11/2013 19:28

Greetings from Northern Canada! We've already had 3 bouts of snow here and temperatures as low as -14 during the daytime.

As well as being prepared for being snowed in, it might be sensible to be prepared to be stuck in your car for a few hours. A bottle of water, blanket or spare winter jacket, collapsible snow shovel and some snacks. Canadians like to keep a bag of cat litter in the boot as a lightweight alternative to sand for aiding traction.

There's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.

and inappropriate cars Moose Grin

digerd · 07/11/2013 20:01

That's what was said in Germany and winter tyres were fitted by November.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 07/11/2013 20:20

We've had our winter tyres on since early October but we were heading to Jasper and a greater chance of snow.

Inappropriate cars and idiotic drivers!

digerd · 07/11/2013 20:33

I remember one year DH did have the tyres done in October and in November we had 2 months of well below freezing and lots of snow.
That was 1996. The thaw set in that year in January and it took 6 weeks before the 2 m ice blocks on the river Elbe melted so that the ferry could be in use again for the 30 minute journey across.

Brrrr 2 degrees last night and still is. It is supposed to be mild Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/11/2013 13:10

heavy rain warnings for a good part of southern england.

digerd · 08/11/2013 14:55

Was in the dance hall this morning but when I went home at 11.15 it was drizzling. Sun came out at 1-2 and managed to take dog for a walk in the dry, but ground was full of puddles and grass soaking wet. Darkening skies now.
Is milder though at 11 degrees. < very dark in the houseSad>

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/11/2013 09:22

GFS has thrown up a doozy of a chart storm wise for the 20th November. It's a long time in forecasting land and it may vanish in the next model run. ECMWF for the same time frame has a deep depression but in a different location, so it is possible that GFS has picked up on something.
I will keep an eye on it.

Morning! I've caved/got overexcited and bought myself some stupidly expensive winter boots. Bearing in mind I can get properly hypothermic in the summer (not an exaggeration) I'm calling them An Investment and working on the principle that they're well made and will last several years.

We're talking fleece lined fully waterproof designed for people that actually go skiing. For me to wear in devon. Year round!
Grin

I think snow would validate them. But honestly the chiller section in tesco made me grateful for them yesterday

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/11/2013 09:49

Fabulous Regaining!
I don't regret my waterproof merrells for a second!

RegainingUnconsciousness · 10/11/2013 09:50

Oh, and DH spotted the rain warnings this morning. But that's nothing unusual here.

RegainingUnconsciousness · 10/11/2013 09:51

I looked at Merrels, and some others, but got Sorels instead. Blush

I hate being cold. A friend brought me a heated hoody from Canada a few years back. It's lush!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/11/2013 10:07

I tend not to post rain warnings very consistently unless it looks unusually severe or if I'm having a random moment Grin

however if you look at today's warning for ice, don't you think it makes it look like Britain is wearing a shower cap?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/11/2013 10:09

Those sorel boots look toasty warm!

RegainingUnconsciousness · 10/11/2013 12:24

Just wore them out on a walk, it's only about 8C (I get cold!) but it was like my feet were still in bed!

Off to check out the weather warnings for myself.

Weather station says pressure is still on the up here.

FunnyRunner · 10/11/2013 12:56

Anyone fancy linking to the cosy winter boots? I wore my converse to the market yesterday and I swear I might as well have been barefoot for all the protection they gave me it was 4° and the cold was just rising up from the ground!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/11/2013 20:42

I can't remember where I got mine from, there was a link on mn to discounted merrell boots two years ago.

Storm has vanished from GFS, but then a couple of days later it shows the most bonkers one ever over iceland with a central pressure of 940 right next to a hp of 1030 and pressure gradient so tight that the lines are almost drawn on top of each other.

First air frost of the autumn here, heading down to -1c.

digerd · 10/11/2013 21:06

Shock Just noticed it is 0 degrees outside. Hope the forecast is right that it will cloud over and become milder in the night.

digerd · 10/11/2013 21:11

ps been sunny but cold all day today.

RegainingUnconsciousness · 11/11/2013 00:13

Talk of snow in London ATM (although they at it could be frost) deffo just rain here.

These are my boots. I didn't pay that much for them. And what I did pay is under the headings: THEY'RE AN INVESTMENT! and I'm Too Old To Keep Being This Cold!

Funny the transition from converse was just blissful!

FunnyRunner · 11/11/2013 00:42

Thanks Regain they look lovely! Are they true to size?

It hailed here last night and sounds like it might be hailing again now :(

RegainingUnconsciousness · 11/11/2013 06:05

The first size I asked for fit like a dream. I've also got fairly wide feet (yeah, lush) and they're roomy round the toe so no cold from compression either!

I want to wear them to work. I'm probably not allowed!
