2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

Regaining - was cold but certainly no snow!

digerd · 11/11/2013 09:29

S.Herts
No idea what happened in the night, but this morning my minimum outside temp was -1 at 01.14. At 7am it was +6 and sitting room took 3 hours to get to 21 degrees from 16.6Sad.
My parcel has been all round the SE and back but still not deliveredConfused, so a bit grumpy today Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/11/2013 09:35

We had a 'warm' front go through Grin
My house is much colder today - we really benefit from sunny days heating up the house through the windows even when it is cold outside.

digerd · 11/11/2013 11:38

I get the sun in the summer through my windows, but facing E/W don't get much in the winter Sad.

Went out with dog at 10.30 and the breeze was not cold but it drizzled a bit. So far the drizzle has made it milder and we can't have everything. Where there's a pro there is always a con.

Littleredsquirrel · 11/11/2013 12:05

Its very very cold here. Im sat typing wearing fingerless gloves!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/11/2013 13:18

Looks like we may be going more into winter temperatures from midweek next week according to GFS.

Littleredsquirrel · 11/11/2013 14:26

Right, new boots for me too then!

digerd · 11/11/2013 15:24

I bought some lovely boots and eskimo outfits in the January sales this year for walking my new little dog. I have special needs < being old and frail> so need light as a feather and flexible soles which they areSmile. As well as being waterproof and faux fur lined and easy to get on and off. Don't need and don't have more room for any more Sad

GloriaSmud · 11/11/2013 16:48

We had temperatures down to 0.4C at 10pm last night but it had gone up to 7C by this morning.

Netweather have started their Christmas forecasts and the latest one is here ~ not that it's very reliable at this stage and I wouldn't take much notice of what their 'Santa Shaker' says about the chances of snow either!

digerd · 11/11/2013 19:21

Still drizzling and still mild at 11.8 degrees. My heating has been high all day - it regulates itself and normally after 9am rads are cool to cold. Luke warm atm at 20 degrees on thermostat.

My parcel turned up at last today. Smile

RegainingUnconsciousness · 11/11/2013 19:25

Yay for digerd's roaming parcel!

A toasty 12-15C here today! Pressure's increasing so hopefully the drizzle will shift.

I'm looking forward to some chilly weather now!

digerd · 11/11/2013 22:14

Regaining 15 degreesEnvy. 12 atm here which is top in the last 24 hours. In the winter I am toasty warm only when under the duvet, which I soon will beGrin.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2013 15:39

ermmm.

Might need to raise the first lowland snow alert for next week. Am going to be busy for an hour or so but will update when I'm done.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2013 17:30

At the moment next week looks much colder. Perhaps snow showers down to lower levels in northern Scotland by Tuesday? Perhaps, just perhaps a little wintery stuff down the NE coast (away from immediate coastal areas) tuesday night into Wednesday.
Long way off in forecasting time mind you.

duckyfuzz · 12/11/2013 17:32

woo hoo! sounds like a bit of snow potential for Co Durham!

duckyfuzz · 12/11/2013 17:33

tbh it has already snowed higher inland, on t'pennines, but we'd like some too - its cold enough!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2013 17:36

The Pennines have a climate all of their own! We got stranded in october once in Bakewell. Couldnt get out for love nor money - all the roads were shut! Had to go to tourist info and beg for a place to stay. Fortunately it meant that other tourists couldnt get into Bakewell either, so we had a lovely b&b and a fabulous lock-in in the local pub

ClaimedByMe · 12/11/2013 17:46

Our local amateur weatherman WindyWilson is agreeing with you for next weeks snow...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2013 18:14

cool!

digerd · 12/11/2013 19:08

We had a sunny mild day today, but now temp has plunged to 4. Hope it clouds over again and rains in the night as always a mild night then, or it could snow of course?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2013 19:17

if the ECMWF were correct then other areas could see snow too!

digerd · 12/11/2013 19:41

In SE? My geranium is still blooming and must take it in before a hard frost arrives. Had it for years despite some branches being frost bitten and destroyed last year . Although it is not looking as good as it did when younger, I feel an affinity with it Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2013 20:25

You may get a hard frost next week digerd, too early to forecast snow, other than the possibility is vaguely there in the models.

RegainingUnconsciousness · 12/11/2013 23:17

Hello! After a beautiful devon day (allegedly, I was inside working all day) it's now dropped to 3C, I think it might go to 0 overnight.

Any snow forecast for the pointy bits down this way Kitten?

digerd · 13/11/2013 07:28

No snow as a clear sky but only 0 degrees which it still is. Heating again struggling to get to 21 in sitting room despite being only 17 at 5.30 when it came onConfused. Will have to put boiler back up onto Max
