well, it looks like winter finally might be arriving!

First indications for snow are for this coming saturday as a low pressure draws in cold air . The met office arent really going for it at the moment, but the potential is certainly there. At the moment I'd say the biggest risk is for the midlands and central England.

After that there seems to be a cold few days but then the models start to disagree. GFS shows a positive snow fest for the 24th! masses of snow, but its a long way off and until we get much closer who knows what really will happen.

Morning OYBBK. Just got the car out. Seems colder. Sad But nothing falling from the sky solid or liquid. Yay!

BehindLockNumberNine · 09/01/2013 07:42

It definately feels colder, but that does not mean snow and school closure so am not getting excited yet....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2013 07:50

Ok,
Well
saturday: GFS is still going for snow for the midlands, central England and southern Wales. Along the south coast it looks too warm until late that night, wet instead. The Thames estuary seems to make a reasonable dividing line with more chance of snow above it, less below it (though it won't be as clear cut as that I'm sure!) The met office looks much more marginal for snow as does the ECMWF.

Sunday: watch out for ice!!!!!! Far sw and far SE likely to stay warmer, so there may not be a problem with snow/ice there but elsewhere...skating ring territory if you ended up with Saturday rain rather than Saturday snow. Maybe some snow showers around, esp along NE coasts and perhaps southern England (away from far SE and sw) staying subzero in many areas. Deep frost over night-protect vulnerable plants and animals! UKMO still not going for so cold.

Monday: GFS says very very cold day. Eastern coastal areas may get snow showers. again, UKMO not so deep cold.

Tuesday: watch out in Gloucestershire and surrounding countiesfor severe frosts perhaps below -12! Some cold dry days to follow

But then Thursday/fridayGFS has it breaking down from the west with the east hanging on to the cold. It sends in some rain/snow. What a messy picture! ECMWF doesn't support this scenario and goes for proper cold instead!

So to summarise, it looks likely at the moment that things will turn cold on Saturday/Sunday, perhaps very cold with plenty of potential for snow. Later next week the modes split as to whether the cold will deepen and hang around for some time or whether the Atlantic will win.

And with that, I ought to get on, else I'll be late! Back this afternoon with latest model details!

Ooh! Netweather snow watch has changed from 21% chance of snow on Saturday last night to 90% on Sunday this morning in Somerset. Exciting!

NorthernLurker · 09/01/2013 08:08

I LOVE your forecasts Grin Thanks

hopenglory · 09/01/2013 08:32

We're it going to get anything down here in Devon, but I can live vicariously through you lot Grin

TheSkiingGardener · 09/01/2013 08:45

If you want to do a lot of sledging then this folding one is wonderful

here

stubbornstains · 09/01/2013 09:11

We've had just about ENOUGH of the fecking Atlantic weather systems down here....haven't had a proper break in the weather for at least a year. I am growing mould.

Go on Atlantic, go and do one. We want Siberia to come over for a holiday.

Chopstheduck · 09/01/2013 09:14

NO SNOW ALLOWED!

Especially not next month when I want to fly.

:(

DH will be stuck wfh and getting on my nerves

I shall have all the snow I want in Montréal, so I would really appreciate a snow free winter this year

Grin
Shinyshoes1 · 09/01/2013 09:21

Labradorlover · 09/01/2013 09:22

Labradorlover · 09/01/2013 09:24

For Sunday.....getting a bit too excited.....

PestoFrostissimos · 09/01/2013 09:34

Ooooh I do hope we don't miss out!

Although from what you've said, I think we'll miss it down here on the South Coast (outskirts of Brighton) Sad

pigsinmud · 09/01/2013 09:51

Well I love a bit of snow.We have got an 80% chance of snow on Sunday according to net weather, but it is very light - doesn't sound too exciting!

pigsinmud · 09/01/2013 09:51

Oh, but just in case it is more than that, I have some more firewood coming!

Tortoise · 09/01/2013 09:56

Ooh gone from 21% to 90% chance Sunday for me too (somerset) Grin

pigleychez · 09/01/2013 10:05

Pesto- We arent far from you! about 20 miles up. :)

Net weather says 80% chance of snow on Sunday morning yet Met office currently doesnt say any? Who's more reliable?

wewereherefirst · 09/01/2013 10:13

hopenglory Don't be defeatist! The moors should get something this year, it's not right without snow on the moors! Grin

LillethTheCat · 09/01/2013 10:16

Thanks for the thread.

I like snow, but dont like disruption, will there be a lot of disruption if it does snow? I have to get to Ripon (from Darlington area) on 15th for an exam that I couldn't get to before Christmas due to rain. I can only get there by driving so it really can't disrupt the A1 at all. But if it doesn't do that, then I am happy.

LillethTheCat · 09/01/2013 10:20

No Ive looked at Netweather and BBC and so far it looks like we might get snow up here, but not THAT much. So I will remain positive that it will snow enough to look pretty without causing too much hassle for anyone.

wewereherefirst · 09/01/2013 10:22

Ooh 90% chance of snow here on Sunday evening. Just in time for DH to go to work, but he's bagsied a sledge if it settles so he can zoom down the hill Grin he's the biggest kid ever!

Catbag · 09/01/2013 10:39

About time! I have been disgusted by the weather in North Yorkshire recently.

Catbag · 09/01/2013 10:41

Hey Lilleth, I am not far from you.

pmTea · 09/01/2013 10:42

just one day of snow please - not too much - just enough for little ones to have in the park with...then straight back to mild until Spring please and a gorgeous April Smile
