well, it looks like winter finally might be arriving!

First indications for snow are for this coming saturday as a low pressure draws in cold air . The met office arent really going for it at the moment, but the potential is certainly there. At the moment I'd say the biggest risk is for the midlands and central England.

After that there seems to be a cold few days but then the models start to disagree. GFS shows a positive snow fest for the 24th! masses of snow, but its a long way off and until we get much closer who knows what really will happen.

None here on the east coast of Scotland, though we seem to be in a bubble because schools & roads are closed all round us! Schools 10 miles away are shut, we have blue skies and not a drop!

Dottiespots · 14/01/2013 13:29

absolutely freezing here in the mountains of North Wales. Snowed a bit yesterday and the mountains are covered in the white stuff but none here on ground level yet.

ArkadyRose · 14/01/2013 13:31

Drizzly sleet here in east London now. DD3 will be disappointed when she comes out of school!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 13:31

mumat

freezing rain is rain that is either supercooled (ie below freezing but still liquid) and freezes on contact with a surface or sometimes its said to apply to rain that lands on frozen surfaces and freezes (but that isnt proper freezing rain)

Hail is when hard ice pellets form, usually in cumulonimbus clouds.

sleet in the uk is snow that melts as it falls. In the states it is ice pellets where melted snow refreezes as it falls through a cold layer.

Graupel resembles little polystyrene balls (and I saw some mixed in with the lying snow this morning) its when a snow crystal picks up a bit of supercooled water as it falls which deposits itself around the crystal.

North Essex, big flakes and not settling :(

DamnDeDoubtance · 14/01/2013 13:33

I use this one.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 13:33

SSC, at the moment the weekend of the 26th looks relatively mild and wet. But its really a stab in the dark this far in advance!

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 13:34

oh, wet snow is nearly sleet or nearly snow!

Starshaped · 14/01/2013 13:35

Cold and bright in Manchester. Doesn't look like there's going to be any chance of snow...

MrsSalvoMontalbano · 14/01/2013 13:42

heavy rain now Sad

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2013 13:45

Lovely sunshine now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 13:45

Ok, this weather system seems to behaving pretty much as expected I think. snow looks to continue in East Anglia and Lincolnshire through the night but also could be a bit of a snowy sting in the tail for the far SE too. Easing off in the NE tonight.

For those with rain at the moment, ice could be a real issue in the morning. Fortunately the temps arent expected to go too far below zero where it is wet at the moment. after, some cold days to come.

GFS has the next significant snow fall risk on saturday as I think does UKMO.

Biggish flakes here - not settling in the city centre.

BelleDameSansMerci · 14/01/2013 13:47

Thanks OYBBK.

Had quite a lot here this morning but clearing now. Yay!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 13:50

Grin Belledame!
I'm a bit :( some proper snow would be ace. I dont want it next weekend though!

OP posts:
BelleDameSansMerci · 14/01/2013 13:53

It was all fluffy fat flakes and blizzard-y earlier but it's going now. It only settled on gardens/cars/etc not on the road.

I would send you every flake with pleasure. Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 13:55

would you like my rain instead? Raining at 1C is about as bad as it gets I reckon!

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2013 13:57

Oi! Someone's nicked my sunshine. Angry

mumat39 · 14/01/2013 13:59

Ooh. I didn't even know what grapple was. I'd seen that someone else had mentioned it up thread.

thanks Kitten. You really are brilliant at this!! I've seen from other forums talk of a big snow event, but there was supposed to be one this weekend just gone, but it didn't happen, hear at least.

So, in terms of all the uncertainty over the effects for us as a result of the SSW, is there a standard this that should happen and do SSW's happen often? And is it know what causes them? I watched that bbc video about it and they said on that that the temp in the stratosphere rises by between 40 to 50 degrees. Wow!

Thanks again.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/01/2013 13:59

Sunshine here now. We'll be slushy in no time.

mankyscotslass · 14/01/2013 13:59

Sunny here now and cold, the snow from last night only really stuck in sheltered spots, a bit disappointed really.
