Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

The 1812 to Preston is running but very very late.

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 08/12/2011 19:40

Thanks ouryve

ok back to snow forecasting (though those in NE scotland will still be dealing with the storm)

Some of the models suggest snow for the NW of England tomorrow and perhaps the Pennines. Others keep it pretty much dry apart from northern Scotland. So thats not much of a forecast really!!! Met office also suggest snow in the NW on Sunday.

Next week shows lots of storm potential. One to watch. In general the models handled todays storm superbly with pretty good agreement since Monday or so.

morning!
I've been looking more at the wind potential over the next week than snow. We are continuing on a theme I'm afraid of a very active jet stream bring us more deep low pressures. I have my eye on one large lingering one on Tues/Weds, one later on thursday and one on Sun the 18th (which no longer looks like armageddon!) Too early to give any real forecasts as to how they will affect us if they develop but they are there in the models at the moment.

But not much bastard snow?

midnightexpress · 09/12/2011 08:01

Mornin OYBBK! No snow here in Glasgow this morning. It was weird how the wind just suddenly fell away last night. I looked out at about 11 and it was almost calm. After all that. Strange day.

As long as no more snow, I'm happy. Our coorie down day yesterday was actually a bit lovely, though we were lucky that we could all stay home safely.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 09/12/2011 08:10

Some snow for higher parts of Scotland and northern hills in England/Wales quite likely Jingle - pretty similar set up to this week gone by really.

'frad its work time - will be back later :)

Morning! We were woken a few times overnight by hail again.

So far this morning we have had a couple of hail storms - the miost recent one has just turned to sleet and is trying to snow.

mankyscotslass · 09/12/2011 10:10

Snowing heavily in Renfrewshire

midnightexpress · 09/12/2011 10:44

Really? Eek!

mankyscotslass · 09/12/2011 10:51
Xmas Grin

According to DM, who is now insisting on heading to Braehead, it is!

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2011 11:10

As some people (said through gritted teeth as here in Leicester, we're yet to see any of the stuff!) are getting snow, can I take the opportunity to remind folks of this fun site. I love seeing where it's snowing in the country!

mankyscotslass · 09/12/2011 11:12

More hail!

laughalot · 09/12/2011 12:51

am I sad that I want snow !!!!

Hulababy · 09/12/2011 13:37

Currently snowing up the hill in Sheffield again. had snow showers first thing this morning too. Was very slushy and a bit slippy on the roads earlier. I am desperately hoping it will stop asap - have to go out on school run around 3 and I hate driving in any form of snow.

mankyscotslass · 09/12/2011 13:57

Sleet here again, but I can see snow on the tops of the Pennines.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 09/12/2011 14:08

warnings including for a storm system Monday/Tuesday in the west and south. I think that is the lingering one I spotted hanging about tuesday/wednesday but the warnings only go up to Tuesday.

(Tis keeping me slightly busy this weather lark!)

off to look at the models....

Have spotted snowflakes here this lunchtime. iThis is quite useful for RT snow info.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 09/12/2011 14:29

bbc - over 50000 without power

Snow wise - looks like the north west is having some decent snow as are some of western and central scotland. Tomorrow - again western scotland in the firing line for snow but pretty much anywhere in Scotland has snow potential (some may be rain instead)

More thunder in the NW on Sunday then on Monday night the new round of 'fun' begins. No signs of snow in the south in the foreseable future. Just lots of wind potential.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 09/12/2011 14:34

You can see the cluster around the pennines very nicely SantaS but some dodgy data there too! (snowing in Bristol currently with a temp of 7C?!)

OP posts:
BlackCatinaSantaHat · 09/12/2011 18:55

We had hail earlier and before that rain. No snow yet but we are not high up here.

HarrietJones · 09/12/2011 21:57

Had snow in Kendal earlier. Not settling though cos its wet.

Just hail & rain since I got home

GlitterKitty · 09/12/2011 22:06

WHERE IS MY SNOW

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 09/12/2011 22:20

fraid wind is the more concerning feature still - just waiting for the models to get handles on position and depths of the potential storms. Will update with info as soon as I get it.

OP posts:
GlitterKitty · 09/12/2011 22:26

pOXY wind.

No one wants wind in December FFS.

We want silently falling snow until you look out at 10pm & its all orangey outside under streetlights... and you have to open door and touch it because it looks so lovely.

Sigh.

Sad now.
