Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

SantaS - your poor table!

Just to give people here a bit of a heads up as I said yesterday evening there may be another storm next Tuesday/Wednesday in a similar position (or it may go further south or north or not develop at all but all the models I've looked at are showing something). It doesnt look as potent to me, but it might be sensible to get any clearing up you need to do before then just in case.

Dark and gusty here in Leicester, I think it's also got colder as well in the last 1/2 hour. Got to go and pick DD1 up in a few minutes and then pick DDs 2 and 3 up from school at 5pm (whole school are seeing a pantomime in Loughborough today.) I don't envy them coming back on the coaches later on, especially if they come back on the M1. It's a bit high up around Junction 22 and tends to have weather systems of its own around there!

SantasStrapon · 08/12/2011 15:14

Thanks OYBBK, my Dad is going to come over at the weekend and take my table back with him. None of the wood has split, it's just disassembled itself. Xmas Confused

Will make sure garden is totally clear.

Shock just looked ahead to any other possible storms over the next week or so. As well as the one tues/wed there is one showing on ECMWF for the 18th that is absolutely Shock - makes todays look almost wimpish. Covers the whole of the UK with central low pressure of 930mbar (todays is around 960mbar). I don't think it will happen......

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 15:19

See for yourselves
wetterzentrale then click on ECMWF and on 500hPa,SLP click on 240h.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 15:20

To contrast GFS has a nice gentle high pressure for the 18th!

SantasStrapon · 08/12/2011 15:22

I bloody hope it won't happen. How does that compare with the famous hurricane?

And more importantly, will it bring me snow?

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 15:25

SantaS - you mean the '87 storm? It would be worse on a much wider scale. Other models are showing a nasty storm crossing the middle of the UK next thursday so really forecasts are all over the place and the only thing we can really say for certain is that it is going to continue to be storm over the next week or so.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 15:26

'stormy' not 'storm'

Gust of 165 mph on Cairngorm, that's bonkers.
Good call to shut the schools early.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 15:37

that is bonkers Lablover - close to the record of 173mph. Thank goodness no one lives up there!

Thanks for the info OYBBR- I always look for one of your threads at times like this.
Sorry those of you in Scotland are having such an awful time-so scary.
I'm in Durham, in an exposed area, and the wind is really starting to gather pace. Does anyone know when it's supposed to peak/doe down here? TIA.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 16:03

sibling :) Midnight for your area I think. Going to be a rough few hours but fortunately not as bad as the central belt in Scotland.

Evenin' all from the eye of the storm Glasgow. Still gusting enough to make this big sandstone house shudder. We are eyeing the precariously perched Scots Pine outside rather nevously. On the bright side, our lovely lollipop lady has been complaining to the council for weeks about a dangerously corroded traffic light at her junction. they've ummed and ahed about replacing it, agreed to do it on Monday, then it snowed and they didn't show up. Well, it's blown over now, and at least there weren't any tiny tots standing underneath it at the time as the school was shut. Every hurricane cloud has a silver lining.

BBC Scotland reports from around the country are mostly overturned lorries and floods. Luckily no serious incidents so far, from the sounds of it. I think people have heeded the warnings to stay home, thankfully. Hopefully manky's mum didn't head off to braehead after all.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 16:49

evening midnight - glad you still have power and a house and whatnot. All I can say is thank goodness for Councils heeding the weather warnings - it will have certainly saved lives.

midnight - she stayed in bed! Today wasn't a good day for her so she decided to leave the shopping til later. Thanks. Smile

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 16:59

bbc have just mentioned the active cold front that is coming south, due to hit the SE over the next couple of hours. Some sharp gusts associated with it but they will be short lived. Some torrential rain too.

midnightexpress · 08/12/2011 17:19

Oh good manky - that must have put your mind at rest. Apparently they've taken all the double decker buses off the roads, so she might have had a long wait at the bus stop. Glad she's safe.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 18:15

Off now for the evening - will pop back in the morning before work.
