Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

Edinburgh, 4 big tiles off the roof already and silly gusts.
Apparently it's now called Hurricane Bawbag........
OYBBR, dont' you wish you lived in Scotland Grin

Jacaqueen · 08/12/2011 12:55

both boys home safe and well. My nerves are shattered. I think the Christmas brady will be open before too long.

Just spoke to DH and told him to get home asap.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 13:31

Lablover I know that for many people this is a very scary and also a dangerous storm but I am a little bit jealous. Probably wouldnt really want to go through it.

warning area seems to larger.

Looks like Edinburgh will see gusts around 75mph by early evening.

Tulloch bridge has seen gusts of 105mph according to the met office.

In the south worth being aware that the squally cold front will pass over early evening with brief torrential rain and strong winds likely.

20 mins South of Edinburgh and the winds are beginning to pick up, although the rain is going in bouts and not so heavy now. We've even seen bits of sunshine.

All the sheep started to move about an hour ago and have wandered down the banks now to be protected by the wind. Still quite a few cars on the roads here though, despite the Do Not Travel warnings.

I'm dreading the power going out and having no lights after 3.30pm. Thought I'd post now while I still have electricity!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 13:58

Good idea to post now LD - are you all set if the power goes?

Herefordshire here.

Bit dark, bit rainy, bit windy. Milder than yesterday. boring

Marking spot, it can snow so we can't get to MIL's on Xmas Eve and bugger off by day after Boxing day. Thank you.

Good luck to anyone with stormy weather and snow to deal with.

OYBBR, I think the cold front moved through here about 1315 - horrendouse high squally winds and horizontal rain. It lasted like that for 10 minutes then settled to steady high winds and normal heavy rain.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 14:26

sounds about right manky :) thanks for the update.

Well, we've lost a chunk of Cedar tree and DH is now standing at the window issuing Jack Frost with instructions as to which other trees might make excellent firewood and would he like to push those ones over, please...

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 14:34

Cairn Gorm gusted to 149mph. Not a record but rather impressive.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 14:35

oh LD - I saw that on the other thread. What a shame :(

Thanks OYBBK, trees come down in storms and we're just hoping that's the end of it. What's amazing is that the wind was so loud we didn't hear the crash.

Bucharest · 08/12/2011 14:41

The south of Italy calling in with 20 fecking degrees! Pffft. Call itself December?!

Settling in and marking place so Snowy Kitten can tell me about Stansted and then Nottinghamshire come Friday 16th!

Hope everyone is OK with the wind!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 14:42

Cripes LD!!

Cold front whilst uninteresting in comparison to Scotland/NW Englands weather is showing some interesting characteristics. Tis possible that one or two tornadoes may result from it. Currently in a line through south Wales stretching up through the midlands.

M6 awful this am, just water on the road. Spray all over. Luckily I've been cancelled & sent home this pm. Tomorrow is going to be ashore day too& not going as far north.

Loads of rivers bursting out

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 14:57

I've been watching a bit on the bbc news. It looks serious. Good job you are home HJ.

I feel a bit helpless in forecasting terms - its all unfolding pretty much as it looked like it would, though earlier than originally shown by the models.

OP posts:
BlackCatinaSantaHat · 08/12/2011 14:57

They were saying there is a bit of flooding on the road near Windermere/Ambleside

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 15:00

I'm not surprised Blackcat - well worth anyone in the area knowing about it though.

Looks like snow is going to become a real issue in northern Scotland.

Lincolnshire calling.

Very, very dark. Wind has died down slightly, and is generally just windy with the occasional heavy gust. Squally rain. Very windy earlier, my garden table (heavy, wood, I can't move it) has been chucked across the garden and broken.

Mortimer has moved himself into the lobby/futility room, and is now making himself at home. Xmas Hmm

Take care all. OYBBK could you send some snow my way please. Heavy snow would make DD2's day.
