Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

I've jsut seen on facebook that ALL schools in D&G are shut

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 07:35

(Dundee city council seems spectacularly bad with it's lack of info on the website!)

Ok precipitation wise - fortunately the met office map seems to show the bulk of the storm to precipitating rain. However, towards the back end of the storm I think this may well turn to snow, particularly at higher altitudes. It's really tricky to forecast so all I can say is to be prepared.

Perth & Kinross issued a notice that all schools to close at 12 today. No mention from Dundee and Angus yet but I would not risk travelling, Glakit.

Some people are calling it Hurricane MaryDoll on twitter!

midnightexpress · 08/12/2011 07:56

The BBC website has a connection to all the councils and a summary of what's going on with schools. Here

All SLC schools are closed all day.

Jacaqueen · 08/12/2011 07:59

I'm in Central still waiting for official word about early school closure.

DS1 is just about to set off for the bus, both of us are hoping that it doesn't turn up. DS2 (6) is still sleeping. I dont want to wake him up and take him out in that.

ClaimedByMe · 08/12/2011 07:59

I heard on the radio one year that my dc Dundee school was closed due to weather so dragged myself to the school and they had no idea! Communications are not good here in Dundee they are likely to decide at 11.59!

We did get a letter home a few weeks ago saying there won't be the shambles of last year and they won't be telling us at the last minute!

Jacaqueen · 08/12/2011 08:00

Falkirk though not Stirling

midnightexpress · 08/12/2011 08:00

If ever there was a moment for a well-worn MN cliche then I guess this is the one:

Stay safe people.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 08:09

ok, I'm off, will be back this afternoon.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadReindeer · 08/12/2011 08:12

oh btw - for those further south, dont forget we may end up with an active cold front passing over this afternoon, so it could get quite squally with T&L and damaging gusts for a brief time.

Take care all.

FairyBlueBell · 08/12/2011 08:18

Clackmannanshire schools closing at noon.

CumpyGruntWithJinglyBellsOn · 08/12/2011 08:25

It's getting rather windy here in Glasgow.

School's are shut all day.

DP has to get to Carlisle & back today & I am shitting it, I remember the big storms in 1987, the clock tower fell into the (thankfully empty) 1st year quad at a local school where I lived.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 08/12/2011 08:34

Ive sent the kids to school as there is no news on TayFm or the council website. Wondering now if I have done the rigth thing.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 08/12/2011 08:34

Grin @ hurricane marydoll lol

Jacaqueen · 08/12/2011 08:47

Falkirk closing at 12 noon.

Going to be brave and drive DS2 to school. Just hope I can get back to collect him at 12.

ChickensThinkYouCanGetStuffed · 08/12/2011 09:22

It's warmish and just a bit blowy in the midlands at the moment. Long may it continue. Stay safe Scottish MNers.

GloriaSmud · 08/12/2011 09:27

Just heard on the 9am News on Radio 2, people are being advised not to travel in Scotland. Bit more about weather/travel here (apologies if this link has already been given upthread.)

Keep safe everyone.

Jacaqueen · 08/12/2011 10:24

Really bad here (Falkirk) now.

Icy rain and hail started abour 15mins ago.

Lights keep flickering!

brawhen · 08/12/2011 10:41

Shit. I have to get pushchair about 1/2 mile between nursery and school pickup at 12:00. Was fine at 8am. Now worried that me & pushchair will take off en-route.

Luckily Ds2 in pushchair is heavy lump.

But still worried...
