Saturday/Sunday weather...

Seeing as the weekend weather forecast for us here in the Midlands is so 'up in the air' (the forecasters aren't sure how far north this weather front with its snow will get so we've got 'there might be snow showers but keep tuned to the TV/radio'), I thought it was worth starting a thread to see what weather everyone actually gets.

It's dry and frosty at the moment here in Leicester.

Just a reminder you can see how close the snow is to you by looking at met office invent and looking at the 'rainfall' You can zoom in to look at your location.

duckyfuzz · 18/12/2010 14:22

Kitten I'm not given to panic about things, but... we are driving south on Mon for a couple of days, back on weds. I notice there's snow where we're headed (glos/wilts) and its going to come down here (NE) whilst we're away, is this right and if so how bad might it be?!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 14:24

Let me have a proper look for you ducky :)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 14:28

Any chance of you being able to leave tomorrow instead? GFS shoes Monday looking pretty grim tbh. Mondays snow is still up in the air (what isn't at the moment?) I'm honestly not sure about wednesday - it shows widespread snow but as you saw. Last night we couldn't even really predict where todays snow would actually be.

Thats not really very helpful is it - all it tells you is that it could be pretty difficult.

duckyfuzz · 18/12/2010 14:32

Thanks kitten, you do a great job of answering everyone's queries! We'll see what tomorrow brings, then decide how to play it.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 14:33

:) you are welcome.

Brent Cross shopping centre now shut!

DidEinsteinsMumDoSanta · 18/12/2010 14:38

kitten when will the models be clearer for what will happen towards then end of the week?

Am supposed to be traveling long distance late afternoon on the 24th and would like to make continguencey plan sooner rather then later iyswim

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 14:38

ok - back later :)
Stay safe all!!!!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 14:39

Einstein, will address your question when i come back :)

DidEinsteinsMumDoSanta · 18/12/2010 14:43

kitten you are a star thank you!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 16:46

okay-doke - am back - exhausted but back.

I would like to give my second ringing product endorsment of the day - yaktrax. Truely astounding snow chains for your feet. I have practised without them - super slippy polished ice and with them. Said ice feels like walking on a slightly lumpy gravel driveway.

back to models :)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 16:52

Einstein, I'm afraid the answer to your question is unknown. It is going to become a bit of a battle between the cold air and warm air from the south. models seem to be able not agree as to which will be the winner.
I really really wish I could give you an answer but I'd be just bs-ing. I can say that at the moment gFS has it at least much drier on the 23rd and the 24th.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 16:55

Another teeny bit of good news - the last two GFS model runs have been very similar for the end of the week.

mankyscotslass · 18/12/2010 16:56

It's freeeeezing out there! Just been in the garden with the kids, trying to play with the paltry snow we got overnight.

The bird water has frozen again too!

YuleTideD0G · 18/12/2010 17:05

No snow here. Very south west cornwall, I don't think we are expecting any but they often seem to get it wrong for where we live. Don't know why

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 17:11

you are right that you werent expected to be in the firing line.

I think that in the uK in general you can talk about a region fairly non-specifically but the end of Cornwall has such a specific climate iyswim.

YuleTideD0G · 18/12/2010 17:17

Yes I often disregard the forecast as they are so rarely right. We are right at the bottom, it's bloody cold and am hoping for just a little bit of snow but think it's doubtful.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 17:24

Must feel somewhat unfair to see the news and stuff. On the upside, it has made today very very hard work. Life before Christmas is much easier without snow.

My upside is that the amount of digging and walking I've done today I can eat as many christmas goodies as I like!

lostinwales · 18/12/2010 17:26

Can someone call the met office for me, the blizzard for London appears to have been delivered to the wrong address (Christmas post tsk!) We have gone from a little bit of snow this morning with a forecast of little if none for later to a complete blizzard. The main road in and out of the village is nearly impassable (great sport watching cars try to get up). I am snowed in, and I live next door to a pub .

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 17:35

hey - best place to be lostin :)

DidEinsteinsMumDoSanta · 18/12/2010 19:09

Tbf kitten i didnt expect an answer to what the weather is doing, just wondering when the models might start increasing in their accruacey for that period. Even you arent a miracle worker. Grin But thankyou very much for even attempting an answer/guess for the weather.

Dryer is hopeful as if there is less falling snow then there is the possibility of getting to where i need to be. Especially as the current models are predicting they will miss out on the snow this time around.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 18/12/2010 19:45

Tomorrow it is very much the turn of the NE again by the looks of things. Eastern side of Scotland too.

Might be worth keeping an open mind if you are in the south tomorrow - theres precipitation shown in the channel - it won't take much to move it further north and give more snow in the south.

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 18/12/2010 20:59

Well Leicestershire got a snow shower at about 2.50pm,it was big fat flakes. But when I got back to the village 3/4 mile away, there was only graupel.None of it lasted long however, which was odd as I could see for about 7 miles and the sky looked very full and heavy in every direction.

duckyfuzz · 18/12/2010 21:02

:( not again the last lot hasn't completely gone yet!

duckyfuzz · 18/12/2010 21:05

I'm relieved that I did my big shop on Weds when I saw the forecast, rather than relying on my (now un)booked delivery getting through tomorrow - we won't have much fresh stuff, but we won't starve!
