Here in Cheshire, also very dark this morning - like Twiiiiitmas I was about to leave the house at the normal time (8am) and checked two clocks twice as I was convinced I must have got up an hour early.

5-6 degrees on the drive to work, rain (now heavy and squally) and it's windier than it has been.

This is one of the few times I am expecting work (mid-Cheshire) to have more snow than home (east Cheshire, edge of peak district), as normally we get peak district snow at home but nothing at all 30 minutes away at work on the Cheshire plain.

Expecting weather to change here late afternoon or on my way home, but we'll have to wait and see! Popping out at lunchtime to panic buy.

Dark, v windy and heavy sleet in dumfries now. No idea of temp!

DH works in Glasgow, am panicking a bit!

winterpetunia · 16/12/2010 09:45

Ah squally, yes definitely say it's that at the moment!
Been looking at uksnowmap and looks like the snow's got as far south as Sheffield. It's moving quicker than I thought it would.

Update now I've been out in Glasgow. About 10 mins after my last post, it started to snow, but it's not settling yet, and has now stopped again, and it's still relatively warm (about 0). I notice that the metcheck forecast for our area is now a bit less dramatic than it was yesterday.

I'm going off to do some panic buying. I want to go to the v local small supermarket, but DP is telling me not to be such a wuss and to go further afield.

Hilarious over-reaction here to last week's fiasco. The new transport minister has spent the night in the traffic control centre. We have visions of him like in one of those tv production galleries, watching the screens and directing proceedings: 'OK now in 3, 2, 1: send out the gritters! And....cue snowploughs!' Meanwhile I noticed the BBC forecast last night on TV saying 'ICE IN THE CENTRAL BELT IN RUSH HOUR' in capital letters, just to make the point that they had indeed forecast it. Don't blame us guv.

itsTwiiiiitmaaaaasss · 16/12/2010 09:54

ok, the wind has picked up, and is now coming more SW. I am still waiting for the street lights to go off Shock

ProfYaffle · 16/12/2010 09:54
or however you spell it.
geordieminx · 16/12/2010 09:57

We've had snow here in Lanarkshire, bit it seems to have stopped for the time being.

Still dont know whether to risk heading off to Peebles for a piss up overnighter though Confused

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 16/12/2010 10:03

South West is daaaaaark and gloomy. Whiffly drizzle and oddly warm out of the wind - it felt warm outside last night.

Wind is picking up tho. The glamour of my life - I have one and a half child-free hours and I'm doing animal bedding, making sure everywhere is chicken poo-free (No poo-ey snowballs for me) Xmas Grin and checking the weather reports. Batten down those hatches and Party On.Xmas Grin

There is loads of precipitation showing on the radar - not much of a clear slot behind the cold front at all. Gas and electric a good idea :)

Silly Scottish transport minister - is he intending up to stay up through the weekend too? He should have got smoe sleep while he could.

AitchTwoOh · 16/12/2010 10:06

what what? should i bother driving across glasgow to get my mother or not? will i be stuck for ten days on the motorway?

siblingrivalry · 16/12/2010 10:07

I woke up at 6 to howling winds and pouring rain. By 8 we had a couple of inches of snow -the wind and rain definitely seems to be a prelude to the snow.

There's a lull in the snow here at the moment (Durham) but we have about 3 inches, although we are in a village which is high up and we ALWAYS get hit hard when it snows.

Really interesting thread, btw.Smile

Unwind · 16/12/2010 10:08

Deathly calm in Glasgow right now, the trees are barely moving.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 16/12/2010 10:08

You may get a bit of a clear slot aitch. check here - close to 'now' the predicted snow/rain fall is pretty accurate.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 16/12/2010 10:09

snow in sheffield area?

Unwind · 16/12/2010 10:13

looking at that MetOffice invent, it seems that they have managed to erect a forcefield around Glasgow keeping the rain and snow away Xmas Grin

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/12/2010 10:17

Very windy here in North Devon but still quite warm and no rain as yet.
We want snow!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 16/12/2010 10:17

lol - the transport minister will be taking credit for it Xmas Grin

patienceplease · 16/12/2010 10:20

I wish I could set my phone to read out this thread while I'm driving Grin
twiiiittmaaaass hereford is where i will be heading in 1.5 hours (will get there about 3ish hopefully) so glad to hear it is warm (ish) there now!

WilfShelf · 16/12/2010 10:23

Temp 7.3
Pressure 1009 and falling
Wind still strong and gusty
Heavy showers and one massive dump of hail.

NW Midlands/Cheshire border

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 16/12/2010 10:23

Latest model run of gFS has cancelled the huge snow event on saturday!!!! It shoves the low pressure right into France. Astonishing at such a short range. Quick scan of the weather forums suggests that no-one saw that coming!
We will have to see whether it has lost the plot or whether other models come on line with it.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 16/12/2010 10:24

ok. Bit more housework :(

moonmother · 16/12/2010 10:26

Rain and winds picking up here in Bedfordshire

Tis very dark Shock

Temp rose for about half an hour to a balmy 7 degrees and now has dropped down to 5.

Pressures dropping too down to 1007.

Want snow but still have shopping to do , so not too much until late Saturday please Grin

mankyscotslass · 16/12/2010 10:28

aw bugger, does that mean no snow for us on Saturday then? Sad

NoahAndTheWhale · 16/12/2010 10:43

Still drizzling in York. Maybe a tiny bit colder
