what do you think? will the uk be buried under 6 foot of snow, or will cheltenham be cold, wet and windy?

Oh dear! I hope it doesn't go a bit north/west later in the day/early friday! Got to get down to Surrey.

Horton · 22/12/2010 21:37

What do you think about Essex, OYSSK? Planning to drive to Essex from SW London tomorrow and then to Gatwick early the following morning. Is this nuts? Our SW London snow is all melting fast.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 22/12/2010 22:21

It isn't nuts. Theres a reasonable chance of some snow showers but it looks ok I think. Worth checking tomorrow about the prospects for Gatwick perhaps. (think it should be ok, but sensible to check)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 22/12/2010 22:24

wine I dont think it will be a problem for surrey.
I think those in suffolk ought to just be a bt aware too.

runnervt · 22/12/2010 22:29

OYSSK
Just wondering what you think about a journey from Glasgow to Essex over Thursday and Friday travelling mostly on the A1 - is this a bad idea?

Thanks Smile Hope you all feel ok soon.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 22/12/2010 22:37

An epic journey!!!
I think that you have picked a good pair of days to do it. AA route planner recommend the m6 m1 route which might be worth looking at? it would keep you away from the (perhaps) troublesome NE.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 22/12/2010 22:38

am off to bed now :) back in the morning.

runnervt · 22/12/2010 22:40

Thanks. We have booked a travelodge near Sheffield at a bargain rate a while ago which is influencing our route choice! Will still have to get home again in a week or so. That's what I get for marrying an Essex boy I guess.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 22/12/2010 22:42

I hope you have a good journey :)

sarahfreck · 22/12/2010 22:44

Snowy and Ducky
Thanks for all your help and advice. Dads health has taken a bit of a turn for the worse and he was back in hospital today having a brain scan to check the damage caused by his fall. He is back home now and hopefully will now be on the mend but it has made our decision for us. They WILL be staying put and I will go down to them on Christmas Eve!

Horton · 23/12/2010 00:33

Thank you very much, OYSSK. You're very kind to help out like this and I appreciate it hugely.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 09:00

oh no Sarah - your Dad and you all will be in my thoughts.

You are welcome Horton :)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 09:04

Ok today's warnings

I'm off to look at the models, slightly belatedy due to lazing around in bed this morning Xmas Grin

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 09:12

Ok for today
once again the NE of England and parts of eastern Scotland continue to be plagued by snow showers, some heavy but probably not prolonged.

Also the SE - especially for kent and some of east Sussex need to be watched today. I'm quite surprised there aren't early warnings out for today in this area - there are for tomorrow. So perhaps it is due in as rain today? worth being aware about the uncertainty for this area.

interestingly the UKMO goes for widespread light snow through the south but this is not reflected in the met office forecasts and GFS does not show this.

On to tomorrow in a moment.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 09:16

(worth highlighting a snow shower risk for parts of norfolk too for today, though they may be rain and the very gradual thaw that the larger part of the SE will experience today with temps a little bit above zero)

mankyscotslass · 23/12/2010 09:18

It's warming up here today, it's a balmy -2.4 at the moment. Xmas Grin

Clear sky!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 09:29

Christmas Eve:
A chance still for snow for the Kent/East Sussex area. Worth watching. This area is currently under an early advisory
Northern Scotland sees snow. Maybe the far western edge of Wales too - but unsure.
Other than that a dry cold day Xmas Grin
For Christmas Eve night - brrrrrrrrr, father Christmas will need his long johns on. A very very cold night!

Christmas Day:
A perfect Christmas day for most. Very cold and dry.

Boxing Day:
The atlantic weather starts moving in. GFS shows that by lunchtime NI is covered by it - but it doesnt look that warm. Temps just above zero Timings will almost certainly change!!! GFS then shows it reaching the mainland by evening. Again - not mild yet. Temps around zero and a lot of precipitation. This could be a problem!

Monday:
If GFS is right then monday would be a real problem. Temps around zero and a whole lot of precipitation. Could be a real widespread snow event. Well worth keeping an eye on.

Tuesday:
The mild air starts arriving in the early hours according to gfs. But it does not make it all the across and the east away from the southern coast stays cold, all the way through until thursday when the mild starts to retreat again.

Now, very worth noting that the models are not in the tiniest bit in agreement for next week. Some like GFS show the cold winning out in the end. Others go for widespread mild. Which model is right? Only time will tell.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 09:30

cup of tea time!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 09:52

Must say, on the radar the eastern half from the midlands up looks like it is developing quite a nasty case of measles!

mankyscotslass · 23/12/2010 10:01

Looks like DSIL might not make it from Wales to us next Tuesday for FIL birthday. Sad

She has already had to cancel collecting presents last weeks, as the snow was too deep.

She lives in a small hamlet inland in Northwales, about 30 minutes from Abergele.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 10:03

bump (cos I'm a bit bored and resolutely refusing to do the 30 million tasks that await me until 11am)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 10:05

oh manky :(
you know gfs could be completely wrong on this one. it wouldn't take much to change things so the atlantic came in on a milder note - just a couple of degrees would make all the difference.

mankyscotslass · 23/12/2010 10:12

I will keep everything crossed!

North America is having it bad too, isn't it?

My cousin lives in North Carolina, and she can't remember it ever being this cold for as long.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 23/12/2010 10:15

oh, I've not looked over there recently. I know they've had it very very cold in some parts.

I remember once when I was over there I went to the mail box with wet hair. By the time I was back in the house it had literally turned to solid ice. Shock

mankyscotslass · 23/12/2010 10:21
Shock

My Canadian relatives are going to Las Vegas to escape the cold over Christmas. They are very disappointed by the weather reports from there!
