Hi Tappering

Re: low carb vegan, it probably sounds ridiculous for someone who eats as much fruit and chocolate as I do, but I do aim to eat on the lower carb side. I rarely eat wheat and I usually have meals where the family can have carbs on their portions and I just have the rest, eg, chickpea curry, I'll just have the curry part and veg on the side and the family will also have rice or whatever. With pasta I'll have courgetti instead. I do eat potatoes a couple of times a week, and sometimes a banana or something. It works for me as nothing is going to get me to stop eating fruit and chocolate, but if I eat bread and other carbs at each meal as well, my weight steadily goes up.

PTDG we found the broccoli a bit on the crunchy side so will do the same as you next time.

Did you try your AllPlants order? I had 2 so far, a stew with beetroot which was absolutely gorgeous, and a not chicken katsu which I didn't like much at all. I was also annoyed because the photo on their website was very misleading and showed a lot of Not Chicken, whereas what I got in the box was 3 small pieces.

Breathmiller I have never found any cheese I like, despite trying several. The green vie mozzarella is the least horrid one I've tried but I wouldn't choose to eat it. Your pizza sounds so good! And a type of cheese you can eat plain with oatcakes, that sounds dreamy.

Yesterday I had:
B: smoothie with soya milk, spinach and pineapple, protein powder, nuts and seeds
L: home made veg pate with a plate of raw veg to dip in, some cauldron marinated tofu, an alpro yogurt
D: the disappointing Not Chicken Katsu, with extra steamed veg
S: a banana, more pineapple, raspberries, ritter sport marzipan chocolate

Hello everyone, welcome the newbies Grin I'm back from my off line rest (well not a rest , because I was caring for mum, who's 92 but still going well ,she's a demi vegan, but with me she's a full vegan Grin ).

ref. mushroom freezing, i've made a lovely mushroom dip , it's easy , you just gently fry the shrooms with a tiny amount of salt and oil till they let out their juices then add onions and garlic cook till transparent. Add to mashed tofu and the herbs you like and blend till smooth. It freezes very well.

I was travelling home yesterday on a boat, so had made a beetroot/black bean dip which I ate with ryvitas and some rye bread, cucumber and lettuce instead of sandwiches. I finished it off in the car.

Am tired today so just had some strawberries and figs and peaches for breakfast.
L. yeast flakes, (I mix it with olive oil to make it spreadable) cucumber on spelt bread

S. A smoothie, I'll decide the ingredients when the time comes Grin

Breathmiller · 29/08/2020 13:28

I hear you. That's the first cheese I've found doable to eat. I got Applewood last week and it was okay melted on toast but didn't like it as much as the Mexicana.
It is a bit spicy but i like that.
Do you know if the ritter sport marzipan has wheat in it? I love marzipan chocolate

Breathmiller · 29/08/2020 13:30

Ooooh, by the power of google i just found out I can eat Ritter Sport Marzipan. Now I just need to find it somewhere.
Yum

BeneathTheMilkyTwilight · 29/08/2020 14:44

Breathmiller I feel like a drug pusher now; Ritter Sport is crack for vegans IMO! You can get it at large Sainsburys or in a pinch, on ebay Grin

ppeatfruit Glad your mum is doing well. I love the sound of the beetroot and black bean dip! Do you have a recipe, please? The mushroom dip sounds very nice, too.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 29/08/2020 15:13

@ppeatfruit welcome back!

@BeneathTheMilkyTwilight I would be annoyed about that at all (so much so I think I would email them to be honest and give them the chance to know/do something about it). I just had the aubergine and split pea stew for lunch. It was tasty and I enjoyed it. I'd have liked more roasted tenderstem, but the picture shows just one piece which is what I got and the piece I got was a decent size

Welcome back @ppeatfruit

We went to a friends’ for outdoor dinner and outdoor movie last night, this morning I am very grateful I’m on antibiotics because they are tequila connoisseurs and DH must have had at least 5 different very generous pours - I wouldn’t have been able to resist either and would now be feeling pretty atrocious!

L: blistered shishito peppers, lettuce, cucumber and hummus
S: took delivery of these incredibly amaranth bars from a Native American kitchen and they were so bloody delicious I ate 2 of them!!!
D: spaghetti marinara with field roast sausages, salad and garlic bread, then fruit and whipped “cream”

Out for a friends birthday to my absolute favourite vegan restaurant tonight I am so excited!!! Then we’re coming back to our for cocktails and cakes and we’re going to a bakery called Saints and Sinners as in our group there are 3 omni’s, 1 FODMAP and 3 vegans and this place does amazing cupcakes that are all in or GF or vegan or a combo of two so we can pick and choose to suit each person.

I plan to enjoy every mouthful so will be light on food the rest of the day. But again already glad I won’t be waking up with a hangover!

Grin If i wasn't painting the bathroom today you would find me on the street corner looking dodgy waiting for you. Grin
Tappering · 30/08/2020 07:43

@cricketmum84

Plan for today is

Toasted protein thin bagel topped with sautéed mushrooms and spinach

Apple and grapes

Chinese takeaway. My local does a rice noodle dish that they make just with vegetables for me. I used to get stressed out with limited vegan choices from some places but actually I've found a lot of the time if you just tell them what you want they will make something a bit different for you :)

Really echo the advice about asking. I went to a colleague's leaving dinner in February. When booking I'd asked the (Chinese) restaurant if they had any vegan options - made it clear it was no problem if not as I'd have stayed for a drink and skipped the meal (and gone to the trusty Wagamama standby!). They said they'd accommodate me no problem and I ended up with the most delicious meal. So much so the Omni next to me was complaining that mine was nicer than hers 😂
Breathmiller · 30/08/2020 07:45

or maybe I'll hang out on the street corner of ijumpedaboardapirateship 's saints and sinners cupcake shop. GF and vegan cupcakes. My dream.

ppeatfruit · 30/08/2020 09:18

Thank you all for the welcome back Grin

Recipe for black bean/beetroot dip: it couldn't be easier; half a tin of black beans with some of the liquid (Waitrose do lovely organic ones) 2 or 3 chopped up smallish ready cooked beetroots, onions and garlic gently fried in olive oil (quantities are flexible of course). Blend everything together. Sorted!

Oooh I lurrrve almond\marzipan dark chocolate bars too. I've cut right down on sugar though so there's a problem of course!! BTW I lost weight almost immediately after cutting down.

Yesterday I made a strawberry, soaked figs, and linseeds, lemon juice almond milk smoothie. For supper.
B. see above smoothie!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 30/08/2020 09:40

Indulged massively and was worth it. Ended up having a few figs during the day and then dinner (shared with DH) was:
Cheese board and raclette with seedy crackers, adobo abalone mushroom with sweetcorn cream and quinoa, udon noodles with sesame tofu and Bok Choi, and a kind of curried avocado salad which is hard to describe but was amazing. Washed down with kombucha

Came home and had half a peanut butter chocolate cupcake and half a cinammon vanilla cupcake and mindlessly snacked on popcorn

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 30/08/2020 11:08

@ppeatfruit definitely trying that black bean and beetroot (both in my list of favourite foods!)

@IJumpedAboardAPirateShip both nights sound like amazing food. I wouldn't have been able to resist the tequila either

@BeneathTheMilkyTwilight was it you who said you wanted to try jackfruit but not in a smoky/bbq sauce? I bought (another!!) new cookbook yesterday, this time One Pot Vegan and there's a recipe for sweet and sour jackfruit in there that might appeal if you want me to share it. They do a lot on social media so you might be able to find it that way too. I like the look of a lot of the recipes in the book (my name is PartTimeDomesticGoddess and I have a problem buying too many cookery books BlushGrin)
After your disappointing katsu curry I can also highly recommend the katsu curry sauce by lazy cat kitchen
https://www.lazycatkitchen.com/vegan-katsu-curry/

Yesterday was
B: spiced porridge with oat milk, sultanas and seeds
L: the allplants split pea and aubergine stew
D: plant burger in a wholemeal bap with lettuce, gherkins, cheese slice, hot sauce and burger sauce. Corn on the cob
S: pineapple, strawberries, 'halloumi' fries with sweet chilli dip from a takeaway vegan cafe. They were nice but not like halloumi fries as the vegan halloumi melts instead of staying solid like the dairy one does
Oh and no alcohol but lots of tea and water after over indulging the night before HmmGrin

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 30/08/2020 11:10

For those that like oatly but find it fairly expensive, i bought the Aldi one on a whim yesterday and its lovely on granola. I haven't tried it in coffee yet though.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 30/08/2020 11:58

@Breathmiller I also bought an Asda one last night on a whim. That was quite nice too, although with a bit of a vanilla flavour to it. DD said it tasted like very thin custard when she tried it, but it was nice on my muesli

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 30/08/2020 13:32

parttimegoddess thanks I'll give it a go. I do like vanilla flavoured things.

Not what I'm eating today but I am batcg cooking so thought id add it in.

Jack monroe's lentil, spinach and lemon soup.
"A pot of kale " my granny's veg soup with loads of kale from the garden.
Spiced ginger butternut squash soup.

Spinach Lasagne (bechamel sauce made with oat milk and Engivita.

BeneathTheMilkyTwilight · 30/08/2020 14:20

Afternoon all.

PTDG Thank you so much for the sweet and sour jackfruit suggestion; yes it was me but unfortunately sweet and sour is another flavour I don't like! I am a pretty fussy eater so I find it hard to find new recipes I like. I will have a look at the katsu but I am wondering if the problem is that I don't actually like katsu? Hmm

ppeatfruit ooh thank you for the black bean dip recipe! Sounds like a winner, I bet it's an interesting colour as well.

IJumped that dinner sounds a m a z i n g. What a feast.

Breathmiller I'm here on the street corner with my pockets full of Ritter sport, where the heck are you? Grin

Yesterday was:
B: fruit, seeds, nuts, yogurt
L: a couple of vegan sausages, cauliflower hash browns, a giant mushroom and a lot of wilted spinach
D: poor DP made me courgetti with sun dried tomato sauce, quorn and chickpeas, and I couldn't eat it. I had an argument with my best friend, got really anxious and a bit nauseous. I do have spates of anxiety from time to time but it seems worse (unsurprisingly I suppose) through the pandemic. Argument now resolved thank goodness, I just freaked out at the time.
S: I probably don't need to say this, but ritter sport, oh and some Green and Blacks ginger chocolate for a bit of variety!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 30/08/2020 17:29

@BeneathTheMilkyTwilight I’m the same as you re sweet and sour and bbq flavours, I use jackfruit a lot in curry these days, nice to have a texture that not just lentils and I think it works really well. Look up any of Vegan Richa’s recipes for excellent curries - we did an Ethiopian one of hers last week and the jackfruit with the split peas was delicious

Another one adding @ppeatfruit black bean and beetroot recipe to the list, I love both too!

Am feeling so uninspired meal planning this week, normally I’d get my books out but have just lost my mojo a bit for cooking

Breathmiller · 30/08/2020 19:48

I'm here on the street corner with my pockets full of Ritter sport, where the heck are you?
You're such a pusher Grin and here's me trying to break my sugar habit.

My birthday is coming up and I have duly informed my crew about this Ritter Sport Marzipan hit. As well as Booja Booja chocolates. Fingers crossed.

ppeatfruit · 31/08/2020 09:28

I meant to say thank you for the new thread Parttime

ref. tasty curry without lentils or jackfruit (i'm being closed minded here but I just don't fancy it Grin). Swiss chard makes a lovely curry, it's easy, all you do is make the sauce and add the chopped centre bits cook till softened then put in the green leafy 'outsides'.

B. Half a mini watermelon yum! 2 peaches and the leftover smoothie.
L.marinaded fried tofu slices ,grated courgettes. half a glass of wine!
S. HM onion soup with the leftover wine! (I'm a lightweight)

Hangingover · 31/08/2020 09:29

Beans on toast with mooch and lemon pepper. Going to try to make courgette fritters tonight, with salad and potatoes

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 31/08/2020 15:57

@BeneathTheMilkyTwilight the recipe I shared is lovely, but not if you don't like katsu 😂. Jackfruit doesn't really have much flavour of itself, but if you tell me what sort of flavours you like I'll keep my eyes skinned while I'm browsing (I love a challenge Grin)

Yesterday was
B: muesli with strawberries, blueberries, seeds and oat milk
L: packed lunch at DDs cricket match of beetroot, cucumber sticks and cherry tomatoes, 3 plums, tesco frazzles, wholemeal bap with quorn chicken slices, mayo and mango chutney
D: itsu veg gyoza (mostly steamed with a few fried) with lots of wok greens. Vegan magnum
S: 2 bagel thins, 1 pair spread with naturli and marmite and the other spread with violife cream cheese

OP posts:
fantasmasgoria1 · 31/08/2020 16:08

I am vegetarian. The thing that stops me being vegan is cheese. I have tried violife and I really disliked the taste. Is there any other vegan cheese that actually tastes good? I absolutely love alpro caramel, vanilla and chocolate desserts and yoghurt. Jackfruit is a favourite. Sorry I guess I'm just looking for different product recommendations!
