Not even going to pretend I don’t want something twatty, so don’t come at me.
I love a posh little market town. Basically I’m trying to replace Chipping Campden as for various personal reasons we can’t go to the Cotswolds anymore.

Criteria in order:
pretty town which doesn’t hate tourists or visitors.
nice pub or pubs, roaring fire vibe.
upmarket high street
good restaurants and cafes, extra points for an excellent restaurant.
nice deli
high street gallery and antique shop
possible to stay in the town
preferably some nice country walks around the area.
Max two or three hours drive from London.

Many thanks in advance.

CharlotteCChapel · 14/09/2025 21:49

Alnwick in Northumberland. If i moved anywhere it would be there

LadyRoughDiamond · 14/09/2025 21:52

Woodbridge, Malton, Burnham Market, Winchester

Sailawaygirl · 14/09/2025 21:55

Montgomery ( mid Wales) but too far from London probably
Malvern
Lavenham or long Melford or Clare in suffolk
Ely is lovely but the country side around not so lovely

Stamford

That’s what I was going to say. Or anywhere around Rutland/Oakham.

BigSkies2022 · 14/09/2025 21:57

Ilkley’s not twatty, but could work - you’ve got Leeds on the doorstep which adds to the attraction. Burnham Market is too small. Holt might work, but it is quite small. Oh, you want 2 hours from London. Well, it’s Marlowe, Richmond, twickenham for you then. I mean, you could take a look at Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, and they’re fine; but if you want something quite smart in its own right, while being essentially a satellite of London, then I think it’s HS2 territory for you.

Max 2/3 hours drive from London!

Agree Holt/Southwold/Bury St Edmunds/Woodbridge/Framlingham would all fit the bill.
What about the south coast - Lymington? I’ve only visited once but it would appear to fit the bill.

I came on to say Lymington.

Lyndhurst could also fit the bill (both New Forest).

Lifelover16 · 14/09/2025 22:02

Northamptonshire - Great Brington, Whilton, Welton, Ashby St Ledgers, Brixworth, Holdenby, East and West Haddon. All little gems and not touristy at all

TimetoGetUpNow · 14/09/2025 22:02

Arundel

another mention for Rye

Oakham in Rutland. Most of Rutland is quite twatty.

I've been in Oakham today and thought it isn't really posh anymore.
Stamford is much better.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 14/09/2025 22:09

Much too far but you need to go to Fowey in South East Cornwall. Or Ripley in Surrey is nearer!

mamagogo1 · 14/09/2025 22:09

Bridgenorth is a bit further but hits your requirements, excellent wine merchant too

Actual footage of OP. She got enemies in South Cerney, enemies in North Cerney, enemies in Cerney Wick, enemies in Bourton-on-the-Water

Exactly what I thought of when I read the op 😂😂😂

Dulwich Village: cut the commute

CandidHedgehog · 14/09/2025 22:32

Solihull and the surrounding area. Two hours drive from London plus a handy train line from London to Birmingham and only 10 minutes by train from the centre of Birmingham for everyday city life - theatres, Harvey Nichols etc.

Burnham Market Or as PP have mentioned , Framlingham ( the Crown is a gorgeous place to stay) and Stamford. If you fancy the beach then I’d go to Whitstable or Broadstairs

sugarapplelane · 14/09/2025 22:47

Henley
Holt in Norfolk
Malton near York. Gorgeous market town with lovely independent shops and a thriving food scene
Rye - I’ve never been but my DH says it’s fabulous and I would love it

Rainallnight · 14/09/2025 22:51

Another vote for Arundel. Ticks all your boxes and spectacular walks on the South Downs.

BerryBlastStrawberry · 14/09/2025 22:54

Holt in Norfolk

Absolutely came here to say this

Shoemadlady · 14/09/2025 23:01

Which part of the country are you looking? Wells in someways is lovely but even prettier is a village called Wedmore, super pretty picture postcard, upmarket, has great deli / boozer / butcher / coffee shop and close to wells which is bigger which is lovely too
