Not even going to pretend I don’t want something twatty, so don’t come at me.
I love a posh little market town. Basically I’m trying to replace Chipping Campden as for various personal reasons we can’t go to the Cotswolds anymore.

Criteria in order:
pretty town which doesn’t hate tourists or visitors.
nice pub or pubs, roaring fire vibe.
upmarket high street
good restaurants and cafes, extra points for an excellent restaurant.
nice deli
high street gallery and antique shop
possible to stay in the town
preferably some nice country walks around the area.
Max two or three hours drive from London.

Many thanks in advance.

I have to say from your “can’t go to the Cotswolds” I think you must be either: Daisy May Cooper or Usha Vance.

St Albans?

St Albans?

Oh sorry you said small town or village! I think parts of St Albans fit your brief though.

Reading these replies reminds me of teachers telling us repeatedly to 'read the question' in exams.
It is amazing how many places suggested are 'apparently' within 2 or 3 hours of London.

@Shoemadlady in a similar area, castle Cary is really lovely too and on the train . We live in Bath but was in Wells on Saturday - I do love Wells but it’s one downer is it’s not that well connected , depends if that matters

Pramfaceache · 15/09/2025 09:48

Mumsnetters, I haven’t ever visited anywhere this twatty before but it sounds terrific.
I think my dream is to live in a village of kind people who sell fresh produce at a local market and have a slightly bohemian vibe. Somewhere safe with a local pub that has live music and real ale. I shall do myself a little bucket list of these villages and I’ll be solo travelling when dc are older.

I however do live next to a pub that was famous for letting customers snort coke from the bar and the bar staff would hand out poppers like free shots back in the day. (Pre Covid, it’s slightly less open about its seedy environment these days). One of the landlords fell out with the brewery and was serving warm carling from the boot of his car.

Another vote for Marlow

Alfriston and Lewes are lovely. Good walks on South Downs Also wondered about Windsor. Henley also nice. More river and woodland walks there I think.

Holt
Ilkley, if you want to go north

Yarm, Corbridge or Morpeth, further north

MayaPinion · 15/09/2025 10:28

Lymington is lovely, with the added advantage of being at the coast, so there’s a marina to enjoy. Good market of Saturdays, and there’s a Waitrose, so that’s a good sign :)

butterfly0404 · 15/09/2025 12:53

Rottingdean is rather lovely
Alton
Newbury ticks all your boxes

noidea69 · 15/09/2025 12:55

What did you do in the Cotswolds which means you arent allowed back?

Bridport or Lyme Regis

I love Bridport but it doesn't feel very posh (which I like!) Also Sidmouth is lovely.

If you’re ever prepared to go a bit further, Skipton in Yorkshire would meet your criteria.

No, it really won’t.

Handeyethingyowl · 15/09/2025 13:02

Beaulieu, but also really here for Cotswolds gossip.

ballstomonty · 15/09/2025 13:04

JulesJules · 15/09/2025 13:13
