Not even going to pretend I don’t want something twatty, so don’t come at me.
I love a posh little market town. Basically I’m trying to replace Chipping Campden as for various personal reasons we can’t go to the Cotswolds anymore.

Criteria in order:
pretty town which doesn’t hate tourists or visitors.
nice pub or pubs, roaring fire vibe.
upmarket high street
good restaurants and cafes, extra points for an excellent restaurant.
nice deli
high street gallery and antique shop
possible to stay in the town
preferably some nice country walks around the area.
Max two or three hours drive from London.

Many thanks in advance.

Narbeth in Pembrokeshire

TheStroppyFeminist · 14/09/2025 19:36

Or Aldeburgh or Southwold

Rattyandtoad · 14/09/2025 19:39

If you are outdoorsy - Buxton. Peak District. Half the price of neighbouring areas. Great food. Theatre. Artisanal and artsy. 1 hr 40 to London and not in paddington so then don't have to get across.

Topsham
Cromer
Harpenden
Whistable
Deal
Tenterden

”…we can’t go to the Cotswolds anymore” - sounds very Midsomer Murders.

Max 2/3 hours drive from London!

Agree Holt/Southwold/Bury St Edmunds/Woodbridge/Framlingham would all fit the bill.
What about the south coast - Lymington? I’ve only visited once but it would appear to fit the bill.

MrsJigsaw · 14/09/2025 19:44

Olney or Woburn

BotterMon · 14/09/2025 19:50

Lymington in Hampshire; Henley; Sevenoaks in Kent; Reigate in Surrey; Southwold if you want seriously twatty; Stamford is lovely and would be my choice but a bit further.

Bradford on Avon is fabulous.
Winchester is great.
Lymington
Holt in Norfolk (I used to live near there)

Chichester is awful, although the market on Friday is good and West Wittering Beach and the Marina are great walks.

MinnieMountain · 14/09/2025 19:53

Bradford on Avon.

Ipperdipperdation · 14/09/2025 19:54

Stockbridge is ideal, otherwise Marlow or Henley

Redburnett · 14/09/2025 19:58

Lyme Regis

Another vote for Lewes in East Sussex. Fits your bill perfectly.

Snowinsummer · 14/09/2025 20:06

I have found the people in Stockbridge, Hampshire to be unfriendly. But maybe they are in some of the other places mentioned as well.

Tootingbec · 14/09/2025 20:10

Rye fits the bill - “high street” is 💯 twatty shops, delis and restaurants- I love it 😬. Couple of boutique hotels in town available.

Lewes

TreesOfGreen99 · 14/09/2025 20:13

Bruton or Frome - both filled with ex-Londoners, very twatty

InTheNotswolds · 14/09/2025 20:17

I was also about to say Stockbridge or Alresford in Hampshire

TenaciousDeeds · 14/09/2025 20:20

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Lewes - the most beautiful market town 30 minutes from Brighton. We always go to their amazing independent cinema which has a gorgeous restaurant attached. It’s always full of beautifully dressed people and the high street has loads of gorgeous independent clothing and lifestyle boutiques.

Thehorticuluralhussie · 14/09/2025 20:21

Bridport or Lyme Regis

PassportPhotosAreHorrific · 14/09/2025 20:21

Shrewsbury or Ludlow.
