Not even going to pretend I don’t want something twatty, so don’t come at me.
I love a posh little market town. Basically I’m trying to replace Chipping Campden as for various personal reasons we can’t go to the Cotswolds anymore.

Criteria in order:
pretty town which doesn’t hate tourists or visitors.
nice pub or pubs, roaring fire vibe.
upmarket high street
good restaurants and cafes, extra points for an excellent restaurant.
nice deli
high street gallery and antique shop
possible to stay in the town
preferably some nice country walks around the area.
Max two or three hours drive from London.

Many thanks in advance.

Stamford! Prefect and so easy to get to London.

lifeonthelane · 14/09/2025 20:27

Shrewsbury in Shropshire

loulouljh · 14/09/2025 20:27

Stockbridge Hampshire, already mentioned. I would second.

Francebffbbgb · 14/09/2025 20:29

Lymington if you like the coast/sailing/riding in the New Forest

onthetrainagainonsunday · 14/09/2025 20:29

Rye in East Sussex has the lot plus you get the beach and nature reserve close by.

AmusedCat · 14/09/2025 20:29

Corbridge or Hexham, both near me.

wp65 · 14/09/2025 20:34

Amersham or Rye

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/09/2025 20:38

Frome or Bridport spring to mind immediately

Actual footage of OP. She got enemies in South Cerney, enemies in North Cerney, enemies in Cerney Wick, enemies in Bourton-on-the-Water

Yes, I want to know why she’s banned from the Cotswolds, too! Blood feud?

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Lewes - the most beautiful market town 30 minutes from Brighton. We always go to their amazing independent cinema which has a gorgeous restaurant attached. It’s always full of beautifully dressed people and the high street has loads of gorgeous independent clothing and lifestyle boutiques.

The only place in England where people still wear proper clothes is Cirencester. Especially in Waitrose which is full of men in Tweed Jackets and ties.

Timeforatincture · 14/09/2025 20:46

Definitely!
Also
Saffron Walden
Lewes
Great Malvern
Rye

If you’re ever prepared to go a bit further, Skipton in Yorkshire would meet your criteria.

MrsBingBong · 14/09/2025 20:49

Saffron Walden.

Holldstock1 · 14/09/2025 20:49

Saffron Walden - Essex
Cambridge - good university town, alot there shopping, nightlife, and if too busy for you there are some nice villages on outskirts or close by inc:
Trumpington
Grantchester

What did you do there? My husband loves it but I’m always a bit bored

There was a festival on - arts and architecture trail with lots of fantastic artists exhibiting in people’s homes throughout the town. My favourite things - nice stuff to look at and having a nosey around posh/cute cottages.

topcat2014 · 14/09/2025 21:04

Kerry Mucklowe is that you? She had enemies in Bourton and enemies in Stow..

Tonty · 14/09/2025 21:05

Baldock, in Hertfordshire.

Tetbury. It is Cotswolds though.

Marlborough is a stunning rural town situated in north-east Wiltshire along the Old Bath Road, the ancient route connecting London to Bath, beside the River Kennet. Last year, its high street was recognised as amongst the nation's finest by Times readers, sitting alongside destinations such as Sherbourne in Dorset, Northallerton in North Yorkshire, and Wells in Somerset.

Tiny street was once Roman road that connected Dover to Wales

The ancient remains of a section of the original Watling Street were recently uncovered during roadworks in Old Kent Road

At least it's not cross the border type of we can’t go to the Cotswolds anymore.

Lots mentioned already but Guilford and Dorking a good compromise.
