I've noticed a lot more northern uk attitudes on here rather than southern & wondered what the demographic of mumsnet is..

OP posts:

OP what is a northern or southern attitude? I have no idea what you mean, so cannot agree or disagree.

KisstheTeapot14 · 19/08/2018 20:32

always imagine I'm the only northerner. For some unexplained reason.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 19/08/2018 20:42

The quiz told me in Scottish but didn't give a percentage so maybe I did it wrong. Anyway I'm from the North East, not Scotland.

To be fair on the OP I read a post the other dad and I knew immediately the OP was from the North East from the language and phrasing. But this rarely happens. Have the time I have to remind myself that there are people from all over the world on here.

Cleanermaidcook · 19/08/2018 20:49

Apparently I'm 81% northern.
A bit out out, off to stroke my ferret and eat a babbies yed for me tea and ponder which 19% is southern!

washewihersen · 19/08/2018 21:22

Never trust anyone from
south of the Trent - that's how I was brought up. I'm a Midlander Grin

Shockers · 19/08/2018 21:30

Clearly my attitude isn’t Northern enough, as I’m 25% Southern.

I’m not though- apart from a year in West Wales, I’ve lived in Lancashire my whole life.

SoyDora · 19/08/2018 21:32

I’ve lived in Leeds, Edinburgh, Bristol, Surrey, Leamington spa, Paris, Valencia, Madrid and Milan... what am I??!!!

EmpressOfSpartacus · 19/08/2018 21:36

SoyDora Well-travelled????

Cakemonger · 19/08/2018 21:39

I'm only 51% northern apparently. The shame.

AngelsAckiz · 20/08/2018 08:23

Me! From Sheffield but I now live in Dorset.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 20/08/2018 08:25

This is a very strange topic to put this thread in. Confused

KlutzyDraconequus · 20/08/2018 08:33

Doncaster and up is northern isn't it?
Sheffield is definitely Midlands.

You'll know you're north when you see BichonFrize replaced by whippets.
noone carries a dog in a handbag, it's a ferret in a satchel.
Blokes wear lumberjack shirts to actually do manual work in.
Beards are worn to keep faces warm and not because they drink self assembly coffee.
And bullseye plays 24/7 on a dedicated channel that you have to enter your secret Northerner ID number to access.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 20/08/2018 08:34

I'm 64% Northern, 36% Southern. I was born in London, lived in Herts growing up, lived in Glasgow for 12 years, now I'm back in London, so that might explain it.

mintich · 20/08/2018 08:45

I'm Scottish but live in SE England so no idea what vibe I'm giving off!

mintich · 20/08/2018 08:49

Just did the quiz and i got 54% northern and 46% southern

Sleephead1 · 20/08/2018 08:52

I'm from.newcastle

UrsulaPandress · 20/08/2018 08:54

Ifailed · 20/08/2018 09:04

Sheffield is definitely Midlands in which case, so is Liverpool & Warrington.

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2018 09:10

Barm cake

DrSeuss · 20/08/2018 09:18

I'm so Northern I plan to petition Mumsnet for topics on Whippets, the best flat caps this season and which tin baths go with my decor.

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2018 09:19

I’d like to see someone tell my FiL that Sheffield is in the Midlands.

I’d say that Sheffield is the start of The North of England. No part of Yorkshire can really be considered not to be north. So Chesterfield /Lincoln - approx similar latitude are Midlands, and Sheffield/Warrington - also approx same lattitude are The North.

This is in my mind. I realise that there is a lot more north of the M1 J32! I lived in Newcastle u Tyne for many years and DF was from Sunderland.

IHaventACluedo · 20/08/2018 09:21

I am a northerner living in the south. I've heard a few comments about it so perhaps I can help.

The main one I hear is "oh, she is just a typical northerner". I think this means that they want things really cheaply, then they bring it back for a refund when they find it somewhere cheaper, even though they have opened it and tried it. I have heard this one a lot. Rather insulting as IMO it is northerners who are first at the bar and last out the taxi.

Another one I have heard a few times is, "I don't think she is pretty, she is just northern". This usually means that she puts loads of effort into her hair, nails, makeup and clothes.

I do hear a lot of sneery comments so perhaps OP is being goady. Having lived down south for a long time, I'd take being northern any day TBH.

MissConductUS · 20/08/2018 09:21

I'm from New York, so I'm definitely a Northerner. Many of the baby names offered here sound a bit odd to me.

SnuggyBuggy · 20/08/2018 09:22

Maybe we need a Mamsnet section Grin

I don't know what Northern attitudes mean but I have often heard it said that Southern mums are softer.

KlutzyDraconequus · 20/08/2018 09:38

I’d like to see someone tell my FiL that Sheffield is in the Midlands

Was he around in the 60s?
Back then, Sheffield was described as "The vibrant shipping centre of The North Midlands"
Seriously, you can look that up..
