I've noticed a lot more northern uk attitudes on here rather than southern & wondered what the demographic of mumsnet is..

My BIL is from Swindon and went to university in York. He found people there "nosy". For example, in a corner shop, the shop keeper would sell you a paper while asking where you were from, what course you were studying etc. Sounded normal and just being friendly to me!
A friend who is originally from Teesside had to move to Christchurch with her husband's job. They stayed there about five years and she liked it but is much happier now they have moved on to Edinburgh. I asked her if people chat there like they do on Teesside and she says they do, unlike Christchurch. Our "normal" is to chat and show an interest, exactly what my BIL hated!

Snuggy Mamsnet could equally be Welsh though, and my Yorkshire gran would never have accepted being called Mam!

Agree with him. Get on a bus and the next thing you know someone plonks themselves down next to you, even though there are plenty of empty seats. then it starts - "where are you from, where are you going, what are you doing here, what's your address, open wide, I want to take swap of your tongue for DNA analysis"
OK, may have made the last one up, but I find it terribly rude and intrusive. None of that's is any of their business, stop being so fucking nosey.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2018 10:28

I'm pretty sure the actual MN demographic is predominantly southern.

I'm not sure I've got much to add to this thread except to urge everyone to google 'ferret in a satchel' Grin

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 20/08/2018 10:32

I did my ancestry thing recently and found I was mainly Southern Irish with some Scandinavian thrown in even though I was born in London and so were my parents. I now live in Manchester. Basically I'm confused but still an MNer.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 20/08/2018 10:38

Mardy bastds

Onthebrink87 · 20/08/2018 10:54

I'm from chesterfield in the Midlands and literally anyone a mile or more north of me calls me a southener and anyone a mile South would argue northener. It gives me identity issues 🤣

Womaningreen · 20/08/2018 10:56

OP why did you post this in "the unexplained"?

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2018 10:56

78% Northern
Not bad since I was born in London and lived there for 18 years. Parents from Sussex and Sunderland
3 years in S Wales.
7 years in Newcastle upon Tyne
20 years in West Yorkshire and mother of 2 Barnsley bairns

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2018 20:41

Just did my score ... half and half, despite having northern parents (one lancs, one yorks), and living in the north over 30 years. I had the misfortune to grow up in Essex.

I must try it on my DH... he's been saying he should feel like a northerner by now, and occasionally (though mercifully never in public) says 'e by gum' - in a southern accent.HmmGrin

Redcrayons · 20/08/2018 20:50

64% northern
The survey is obviously flawed as it doesn't ask what you put on your chips (the answer is gravy).

DamsonGin · 20/08/2018 21:13

I'm a convert to chips and gravy, food of the gods.

MissConductUS · 20/08/2018 21:25

What type of gravy goes on chips?

DamsonGin · 20/08/2018 21:36

We had beef bisto the other day and might have to try the fabled chip shop gravy sometime soon. In fact, I'm down south in a posh hotel for work, I wonder if they'd do that for me with dinner tomorrow night.

frankiesamson · 20/08/2018 23:10

Interesting how there are 98 posts yet almost no one has been willing to say whether they're from the north or south ;)

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 20/08/2018 23:25

Erm. Can you not read?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2018 23:48

I would expect posting on this thread to have self-selection bias and therefore include an unrepresentatively high proportion of northerners.
